PRESIDENT'SMESSAGEThe summer months are coming quick, and if this spring weather is any indication of what the summer will be like, there should be some

hot summer days ahead. Along with beautiful sum-mer weather will bring some other wonderful events within our community, but I will talk about that a little bit later in the message.

A big thanks to all the wine drinkers! The wine and cheese social was a big success; I want to thank every-one for coming out, and a big thanks to all the volun-teers for helping to make this a success. As everyone knows, J. Webb Wine Merchants provided us with all the wonderful wines we were able to sample. J Webb has been in business since the mid 80’s, and is dedi-cated in helping Calgarians � nd the best small family estate wines. They operate within the community, and we are grateful to have them support our local com-munity association, while providing their services for our community members to have a good time. If you are still keen on tasting some amazing wines, J. Webb’s Twelve Under $20 deal can satisfy your tasting needs. They have twelve hand selected wines for spring, all pre-packed and 10% o� , which means the whole case will cost less than $225 all in. I would also like to thanks 1600 World Bier Haus, which generously provided us with all the hot appetizers for this event. Both of these businesses are examples of local business supporting their community; thanks to everyone, and I look forward to the next event.

All the junk was hauled away; the community clean up was a great turn-out, and I trust everyone got a good start on their spring cleaning. I want to thank all the volunteers for helping out, and would like to espe-cially thank Jen Keyes for organizing the event to help our community members get rid of their junk. I also want to thank the city of Calgary for providing the gar-bage trucks, and a very special thanks to the Diabetes Association. The community clean-up was a great way to get to know our neighbors, and help each other out with removing unwanted items, while attacking that spring cleaning head on. Thank you again to all the

volunteers, and now the game is afoot to try and not re-clutter our garages and basements.

Upcoming events in summer and fall; keep up to date with the community associations event calendar by staying connected to our mailing list, and check-ing out the community association website. There are many regular events occurring in the summer months, along with registration becoming available for fall pro-gramming. Summerfest will be taking place on Sep-tember 10th of this year, and is shaping up to be an excellent family fun event.

I also want to organize another social event this sum-mer, whether it is another wine night, or a beer tasting, or even a scotch tasting. Please send me your thoughts and ideas, but there will be another wine and cheese social happening this fall. These social events always bring people together, and are a great opportunity to volunteer and help out our local community associa-tion. Send me your input for our next social event in the summer, what would you like to see happen?

Board members needed for the fall; we are still look-ing for anyone who is interested in becoming a board member with the PBP Community Association. The last board meeting before the summer break will be the � rst Tuesday in June; if anyone is interested in seeing what this is all about, I do encourage you to come take a look. Becoming a board member will get you actively involved in the community, while being able to work with other dedicated community members.

If becoming a board member is not where your interest is, please consider volunteering your time. The com-munity association is always looking for volunteers who want to help organize events and assist other community members. Have an excellent summer, stay safe, and enjoy all the nice weather to come!

Drop-In Art Session

We are pleased to o� er two great programs at our community hall this summer. Child’s Play Group and Pedalheads will be joining us to provide some great summer care options for your kids!

Child’s Play Group will be o� ering nine weeks of va-cation care. Running weekly, starting July 4 through to September 2. We will be open from 7:00am-6:00pm Monday through Friday. The cost per week is $199.99 with options for part-time, and drop-in care. The week of August 2-5 the cost is $180.00. There is also a daily and half day rate available. Every week we will be venturing out of the community hall to explore our surroundings and experience what our city has to o� er. We will have many fun activities planned to keep the children busy, and engaged for the duration they are with us! Pedalheads is a 10 level instructional bike safety and skills camp for kids aged 2 to 12 that provides innovative and e� ective programs that are safe, fun and challenging. We invite children to discover a world of opportunities. From training wheels to trails, each level includes 5 learning categories: safety knowledge, safety skills, trail riding, street riding, and bike maintenance. Heroheads is a superhero themed instructional program that focuses on the development of various physical skills for children aged 4 to 8. Key points of emphasis include: physically active, outdoors, fun, building con� dence, participation in daily challenges, exploring other sports and skills. Kids will participate in a variety of skills, drills, obstacle courses, and games to build their superpowers (the Super 7 Skills), and train to take on the Super 7 Challenge and Heroheads Rescue Race on the � nal day of camp. Jewish Center ExpansionOn June 13th, Calgary City Council will consider a plan to re-zone the land at 90th Avenue and 14th Street to permit a major rebuilding and expansion of the Calgary Jewish Community Campus. The plan is to replace the existing Jewish Center with a much larger and more comprehensive facility, incorporating the vacant lands to the east of the present facility. PBP Community As-sociation has been consulted on this project, hosted an open house back in October of 2014 and has reviewed the conceptual plans. PBP Community Association is in favor of this project. Actual construction of the project will be subject to detailed design and will require one or more development permits if it is to be done in stages. Additional community input as well as private input will be possible at the development permit stage.

Many of our residents have and continue to enjoy the facilities of the Jewish Center. Our ongoing concerns with this portion of our community are with congestion with both tra� c and parking, which are compounded by the uncertainties introduced by the planned South-west Ring Road connection and the proposed Bus Rapid Transit project. PBP Community Association has submit-ted comments to the City Planning Department cen-tered on our concerns regarding congestion. Since the project includes more seniors’ residential units as well as a private school, more pedestrian tra� c, and probably bicycle tra� c is anticipated at the 90th Avenue and 16th Street intersection is likely. Perhaps an attractive grade separation facility could be considered at this intersec-tion to take advantage of the topography and separate the pedestrians and bicycles from the vehicles. Not only would such a facility improve safety and accessibility for seniors and kids, it would streamline tra� c � ow on 90th Avenue and in and out of Glenmore Landing and the new Jewish Center.

The budget was announced on April 14th, 2016 and I would like to highlight important aspects of the budget that are av-enues towards Alberta’s success. Also, I would like to shed light on my participation in the house during the session.

Budget 2016 Highlights:Budget 2016 contains cost-savings measures, including freez-ing salaries for political sta� and government managers as well as reducing the number of government agencies, boards and commissions to control the growth of operating spending.

At the same time Budget 2016 also introduces the new Alberta Jobs Plan to help encourage job creation, business capital invest-ment, and economic diversi� cation. This plan has four pillars:• Supporting families in times of hardship with new supports

and better access to training/ education;• Continuing to invest in Alberta’s infrastructure through the

government’s Capital Plan;• Diversifying our energy industry and markets by putting a

price on carbon, in addition to working to getting the best value for our natural resources

• Supporting Alberta businesses with two new tax credits to encourage access to capital and a tax cut by 1% for small busi-nesses as of Jan 1, 2017.

SWCRC Volunteer Opportunity: Parenting Group AssistantSWCRC is expanding its parenting education program-ming. To support the participation of low income and so-cially isolated parents, we o� er free child care for the par-ents’ young children. As a member of our team of Parenting Group Assistants, you will care for the children by providing a safe, loving and fun environment in which to play, social-ize and learn. The time commitment is approximately 2 ½ hours, 9:30 – noon, either Tuesdays or Thursdays.

It takes a village to raise a child. Your passion for kids, and your desire to contribute your knowledge and experience towards a community e� ort to optimize children’s social, emotional and intellectual development, will inspire you to contact the SWCRC for more information about this impor-tant volunteer role. What does it mean to be � ood ready? Higher river � ows typically occur in Calgary from the middle of May to middle July. However � ooding can strike any Calgary community in any season, often with little or no warn-ing. Interestingly this has less to do with spring run-o� from the mountains, and more to do with precipitation.

The City has plans in place that guide our response to � oods of various sizes. Every event is di� erent and ac-tions leading up to and during a � ood depend on the speci� cs of each event. In general, as a City, we take these actions to mitigate the impact of a � ood:• Manage the � ow of water out of the Glenmore reservoir• Close the gates on storm water outfalls to prevent river

water from entering the storm system• Deploy temporary lift stations to supplement pumping• Deploy temporary berms, � ood tubes or sandbags to

critical locations.Last month, the City of Calgary held two open houses to provide information to residents about on-going 2013 � ood recovery e� orts. This information is available online if you missed the session at Calgary.ca/� ooding, along with resources on preparing yourself and your community in the event of a � ood.

Community building in your neighbourhood! June is a busy month for Ward 11 communities. Be sure to check your Community Association for their family-friendly event listings – festivals, bike parades & Neighbour Day events – just to name a few! Community clean-ups are also underway from now until September. They are a great way to meet your neighbours, and take a burden o� of your spring clean-out.
