Easing the impact

Founded in 1984 by world renowned spinal surgeon, the late Sir George Bedbrook, PBF provides much-needed financial support for Australians who sustain a spinal cord injury.

At PBF we want to see fewer Australians becoming permanently paralysed each year through accidents at home, work or play. For those already living with spinal cord injury, we aim to reduce the impact of the injury on all aspects of their lives.

Life can and does go on after a spinal cord injury.

Message from our Patron

• Financial Security • Affordable Protection • 24 Hours a day, 7 days a week

Her Excellency The Honourable Kerry Sanderson AO, Governor of Western Australia

Every day in Australia someone somewhere sustains a spinal cord injury. The consequences of this injury are life changing and impact not only those injured, but their family and friends.

Receiving emotional, practical and financial support following a spinal cord injury is pivotal to moving forward, ensuring that life can and does go on after such a devastating injury.

Having been associated with PBF Australia for many years, I have personally witnessed the difference made through peer support and the provision of employment opportunities for those living with spinal cord injury.

I have also seen PBF members who have sustained a spinal cord injury greatly benefit from the financial support provided so soon after injury, reducing financial stress at a time of great distress.

As Patron, I commend the Board, staff and volunteers of PBF in their efforts to reduce the impact and incidence of spinal cord injuries in Australia and support their endeavours in promoting safe practices on the road, in the water and the workplace.

RoadPBF’s Road program is an award winning injury prevention program that aims to reduce the number of road deaths and serious injuries throughout Australia.

The program targets young people in school years 10, 11 and 12 who are at pre-driver and novice driver levels and is an important component in a comprehensive approach to road safety in schools. It has been developed with reference to the latest road safety research and in close consultation with teachers and students.

The classroom program is facilitated by a person who has sustained a spinal cord injury through a road crash and has been developed to meet the following objectives:

• Demonstrating the potential consequences of unsafe road behaviour

• Increasing knowledge of the major risk factors that cause road crashes

• Communicating the impact of serious injury or death

• Encouraging positive attitudes to safe road behaviour

• Demonstrating the personal responsibility for choices and the consequences

• Encouraging young people to be assertive in communicating safe choices to peers

Workplace PBF’s Workplace program is a thought provoking and motivational program that inspires workers to participate in safe work practices.

This unique program demonstrates the potentially devastating consequences of unsafe work practices through a first-hand account of a serious work-related injury. It challenges workers to:

• Take on safety as a core life value

• Face the reality that everyone is at risk

• Realise that their actions or inactions can have serious consequences

The program is delivered in a one hour session involving a powerful and inspirational testimony from a person who sustained a spinal cord injury through a workplace incident. This is supported by a video emphasising the consequences of making unsafe choices in the workplace.

The program has been developed and trialled in close consultation with the Industrial Foundation for Accident Prevention (IFAP) who have now included it as a component in their Certificate IV Safety Practitioner Course and their Health and Safety Representatives Course.

PBF’s Workplace program is a powerful supplement to existing occupational health and safety systems.

Talk to us today about tailoring a workplace presentation to your specific needs.

Every day someone in Australia suffers a spinal cord injury. While most Australians understand the importance of safety in the workplace, on the road and the water, very few people make it a priority in their life – until it’s too late.

PBF Australia has developed a range of inspirational Injury Prevention programs that aim to reduce the incidence of serious injury at work, and at play.

We offer four unique programs: Workplace, Road, Youth and Aqua. Each program is specifically designed for the audience, whether they are workers, school age children, teenagers or youth groups.

Putting Safety Front of Mind.

AquaAustralians love the water, whether it’s the beach, the pool or the local river. Unfortunately over half of all sport and leisure spinal cord injuries occur in or on the water and tragically almost all result in quadriplegia.

Through our Aqua Program we seek to prevent serious injuries and drownings within the aquatic environment. The program is aimed at late primary, middle and upper school.

The program features a classroom session facilitated by a person who has sustained a spinal cord injury through an aqua-related traumatic incident. The session includes personal testimony from the presenter and scenario based activities to help students identify risk-reduction strategies.

A unique DVD resource pack “What are you diving into?” is included. The pack is designed to support primary school teachers and aquatic industry workers in raising awareness of serious injury and drowning.

All our presenters have been trained in facilitation techniques, presentation, listening and communication skills, have an understanding of youth risk-taking behaviours and aquatic safety issues.

In Western Australia the program is being offered for free to primary schools in the Fremantle Ports catchment area, proudly sponsored by Fremantle Ports.

Youth Inspiring young people to value safety, and enjoy LIFE!PBF Youth is an inspirational and motivational program that aims to promote safety and behaviours that reduce risk by helping young people value and enjoy life!

Conducted at trauma centres at schools in Perth, Brisbane and Sydney the program plays an important role in helping young people to recognise the negative consequences of alcohol use and the potential life changing impact to themselves and and their families.

Our Youth program presenters know too well the consequences that can occur after consuming alcohol and making unwise decisions. As young people they had the world at their feet and they were ready to live life to the full as able bodied independent people. It took just one alcohol affected decision and subsequent actions to change their futures.

Now as experienced and well trained presenters they share their stories so that young people can learn and in turn make wiser decisions particularly around alcohol consumption.

The presentations are 40-50 minutes in length and are available to year 11 and 12 students.

In Western Australia our Youth Program is sponsored by the McCusker Centre for Action on Alcohol and Youth.

Our speakers offer first-hand accounts of what it is like to experience and live with a spinal cord injury. They emphasise safe practices and the consequences of making unsafe choices, providing participants with the motivation to put safety front of mind.

For further information or to make a booking for your next Corporate, OH&S, School or Community event, call PBF Australia on 1800 809 780 or complete our online booking form.

Our SpeakersPBF Injury Prevention Program speakers are individuals who have sustained a permanent spinal cord injury. They share their personal stories, life before injury, how they became injured , and the impact their injury has had on their life and the lives around them. Find out more about our speakers at www.pbf.asn.au.

SUPP

ORT

Paraplegia and quadriplegia are among the most expensive chronic injuries a person can face.

Some people with spinal cord injury struggle to provide themselves with all the necessary supplies and equipment. Since 1996, PBF has gifted more than $1,000,000.

PBF’s gifting program is funded by the generous donations of our members, corporate organisations and the wider community. ALL of the money donated is used to buy supplies and equipment, which means no money is used for administration or other fees.

We also welcome donations or sponsorship to support our Peer Support and Injury Prevention programs.

If you or your company/organisation would like to make a donation to PBF please visit the donation page on our website www.pbf.asn.au.

If your organisation would like to hold a fundraising event with the proceeds going to PBF please contact us for more information.

All donations are deeply appreciated and will help PBF continue to fund our valuable programs.

As a registered charity, PBF Australia has Deductible Gift Recipient status (DGR). Tax receipts are available on request.

The weeks or months spent in hospital after an injury is a daunting experience. So too can facing life again with reduced mobility and all the other challenges that go along with paraplegia and quadriplegia.

PBF recognizes this and offers help through peer support and family support (both currently only available in WA).

PBF employs Peer Support officers who are people with longstanding spinal cord injuries who can offer support and mentorship to the newly injured as well as advice on a wide range of practical issues.

PBF Peer Support shows that life can, and does, go on with a spinal cord injury.

Spinal cord injury turns life upside down.
