“Let’s press on in faith!”   John & Judith

The hostile voices….

Over recent times certain journalists have been caning theFederal Government’s financial commitment to schoolchaplaincy while here in Victoria a campaign has been mountedagainst the teaching of CRE in schools.

Some things worth noting:

There is a profound lack of fair play – the case for chaplaincy and CRE hashad little prominence in the media. It has been a field day for critics of theChristian faith with no acknowledgement of the benefits of both chaplaincyand CRE.

The critics of the Christian faith would not dare to write or speak sooffensively about indigenous spirituality or Islam. There would be an outcry.Susie O’Brien in the Herald Sun this week described basic Christian beliefs asfiction. Come on Susie – get real. Get out of your office and talk to schoolPrincipals, chaplains and parents. Or do something radical – like taking timeto consider the evidence for the resurrection (or is that too obvious and maybe too disturbing for you?)

Common to most critics of chaplaincy and CRE is a clear ignorance of thefaith itself and the ground rules covering the way in which chaplaincy andCRE are regulated.

What’s so toxic about the teachings of Jesus? Apparently the current cropof atheists are uncomfortable with the principles of loving your neighbouras yourself, or doing unto others as you would have them do to you.

And why it is that whenever there is a disaster, or the loss of a public life, there is always a church service? And often one filled with dignitariesincluding our Prime Minister who has no claim to faith (although sheattended a Baptist Sunday School in Adelaide). Geelong’s Bob Davis wasburied from St Mary’s in Geelong this week.

Our atheist friends fail to realise that they are people of deep faiththemselves – faith that there is no God. That’s a pretty big deal. They can

take that line if they want to. But ordinary Aussies know where to turnwhen the chips are down – they may not “dig” church as such but theyhave no hangups about offering prayer when needed and acceptingpastoral care from the servants of Jesus.

Let’s continue to be a people who love Christ and serve Him. Atheist journaliststake note: His teachings have shaped history and Western civilisation so chill outand let those same teachings shape you. They will do you good. And morepower to chaplains and CRE teachers!
