In this issue SAINT MICHAELS MISSION STATEMENTSaint Michaels Catholic Community is a group of Catholic Christians associated w

the Armed Forces under the guidance of the Holy Spirit and the Archdioceses for

Military Services served by the pastoral leadership of our priest(s), deacon(s), and

gious. The community is dedicated to exemplifying Christian community by procla

ing the Good News of Jesus Christ through worship, service, and witness to the pe

of Fort Gordon and surrounding communities.

    Scripture

And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:4)

When you send forth your spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the earth. (Psalm 104:30)

For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, (1 Corinthians 12:13) "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you." And when he had said this, he breathed on

them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. (John 20:21, 22)

    Reflection

Is Jesus mission on Earth complete without the Holy Spirit?

Is Jesus mission complete without you?

How have you encountered the Holy Spirit?

How does God renew the face of the earth through the Holy Spirit and through you?

I become a new man and this new man, spiritually and mystically one identity, is at once Christ and myself. Theanguage of the New Testament and the teaching of the Church explain, to the mind of the believer, that this

spiritual union of my being with Christ in one new man is the work of the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Love, thespirit of Christ.1

    What is Pentecost Sunday?

Pentecost Sunday is one of the most ancient feasts of the Church, celebrated early enough to be mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles (20:16) and SPaul's First Letter to the Corinthians (16:8). It is the 50th day after Easter (if we count both Easter and Pentecost), and it supplants the Jewish feast Pentecost, which took place 50 days after the Passover and which celebrated the sealing of the Old Covenant on Mount Sinai.

The Acts of the Apostles recounts the story of the original Pentecost as well (Acts 2). Jews from all over were gathered in Jerusalem to celebrate thJewish feast. On that Sunday, ten days after the Ascension of Our Lord, the Apostles and the Blessed Virgin Mary were gathered in the Upper Roomwhere they had seen Christ after His Resurrection:

And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a mighty wind coming, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them parted tongues as it were of fire, and it sat upon every one of them: And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they began to spewith divers tongues, according as the Holy Ghost gave them to speak. [Acts 2:2-4]

Christ had promised His Apostles that He would sent His Holy Spirit, and, on Pentecost, they were granted the gifts of the Spirit. The Apostles begto preach the Gospel in all of the languages that the Jews who were gathered there spoke, and about 3,000 people were converted and baptized that dayThat is why Pentecost is often called "the birthday of the Church." On this day, with the descent of the Holy Spirit, Christ's mission is completed, anthe New Covenant is inaugurated. It's interesting to note that St. Peter, the first pope, was already the leader and spokesman for the Apostles on Pentcost Sunday (see Acts 2:14ff).

In years past, Pentecost was celebrated with greater solemnity than it is today. In fact, the entire period between Easter and Pentecost Sunday wknown as Pentecost (and it still is called Pentecost in the Eastern churches, both Catholic and Orthodox). During those 50 days, both fasting and kneing were strictly forbidden, because this period was supposed to give us a foretaste of the life of Heaven. In more recent times, parishes celebrated thapproach of Pentecost with the public recitation of theNovena to the Holy Ghost.Retrieved from http://catholicism.about.com/

How To Grow As Children of God by Larry KennedyBelievers must Be Authentic and Transparent to Enjoy a Relationship with God and Enter the KingdomTelevision shows have been structured around the things kids say because they are so authentic, open and transparent. These are qualities that everyone loves in a cThey are free to be real, to be who they really are rather than hide. The music starts and they instinctively dance! Their questions flow out of a childlike innocence. Thave not been taught to be untruthful.

Hiding is a result of original sin. Adam and Eve hid after disobeying God. Mankind hides from a God who judges justly that all have sinned and fallen short of glory. However, this series of articles have explained, mercy, triumphs over judgment. All He asks is that we acknowledge our failings and receive His blessed plarestoration conceived before the beginning of time and implemented in the fullness of time.

Jesus invites believers to come as they are. Only His saving grace can change people. He never asked one person to clean themselves up before they received Himbelieved on His name. If they could have done so, why would they need Him? He is divinely inclusive, not exclusive. Whosoever will, may co

Part of the joy of the Gospel is that believers need not hide any more. How ridiculous to think that God does not already know one's heart. Religiosity rather than rtionship causes disciples to hide from the only one who really loves, accepts and forgives. Is it not the honest depiction of Biblical characters that causes devotees to h

hope for themselves? If Jesus could love impetuous Peter who was continually changing one foot in his mouth for another, perhaps He can love others like him. To acknowledge Him i

our ways as Scripture emphasizes is to let Him into the dark places of one's heart. How can there be healing from the Great Physician, if He is excluded and locked outis pictured in Revelation as standing at the door and knocking. He will not force His way in. He desires to be invited

Young children have not been taught to be someone other than who they are. They are honest in their conduct and conversations. Regrettably, they are taught to mquerade and pretend to be someone other than their authentic self. The word hypocrite used by Jesus literally means to wear a mask. Adults have developed hypocrisy tart form. Some people you want to shake and ask if anyone is in there! Will the real person, please stand up! Saint Paul describes a new transparency available as we wunveiled un-masked faces, behold the Lord and are changed from glory to glory (2 Corinthians 3:18). He declares that what he desires for Timothy is a sincere fwhich dwelled in his grandmother and mother (2 Corinthians 2:5). Sincere means without hypocrisy. It is the word describing the process of holding up a pot into the lof the sun to see if the potter dishonestly hid any flaws by filling them after the tempering fire, before painting them. Thi s is a sincerity that stands up to the light of theindeed.

Transparency and authenticity with the Lord will result in those same qualities in relationships with fellow Christians. Paul also speaks of sincere love for the brethHow badly the church needs to be a place where people do not have to put on their religious masks before entering the door. How we need significant others with whwe can be real and transparent so real time prayers can be offered for one another--prayers based on the revelation of who individuals really are, not who they would ptend to be.

But there is risk involved. Many have been hurt by being real and then consequently being rejected. Sadly, discretion and mercy has not yet penetrated personal

tionships in Christ's church. Here also Christians must come to the One who can teach them such authenticity and transparency. He alone can heal the wounds that cpeople to protect themselves from the Lover of souls and from one another. Retrieved from http://www.sharefaith.com

The Vocation of a ChaplainPriestly ministry to those serving in the military is a unique and special vocation. TheArchdiocese for the Military Services, USA is the largest geographical diocese in thecountry, and, within its bounds, those called to serve as chaplains must be prepared toundertake ministries as diverse as the regions they visit. As a sacramental minister, thechaplain must bring Christ and the healing power of the Church to men and women serv-ing in an endless range of stressful, dangerous and possible deadly circumstances. He
