Every day mattersThe Marie Curie Hospice, Belfast is here for people living with any terminal illness, and their families. For more than 50 years we’ve been helping people with a terminal illness. And yet every single day at the hospice is an extraordinary day.

Some of the people we care for stay at the hospice, while others come in for the day to attend our clinics or support sessions.

The hospice works closely with local hospitals, as well as GP practices and other healthcare organisations, to support people in Belfast and the surrounding area.

We listen, support and give high-quality care during what can be a difficult, challenging and distressing time. And we get to know people as individuals, find out what makes them happy, and help to make those things happen.

That might mean sitting with them in the hospice garden, or arranging for their pet to visit them at the hospice. We focus on the special things that bring people joy.

Why pay for a day?Our hospice cares for and supports around 550 people living with a terminal illness, and their families, every year. We are able to do this thanks to our fantastic supporters, including those that choose to pay for a day.

You can pay for a day as an individual, or as an organisation.

You might want to recognise an important birthday or anniversary. Remember a relative or friend. Or mark a significant company or organisational milestone.

Whatever your reason, we’re very grateful for your support, so thank you. It will help us give high quality care and support to people in your local community.

How we’ll mark your special dayWe know that the day you choose will be special and meaningful to you.It will also make a real difference to people living with a terminal illness. So, we’ll mark it in several ways.

Your certificateWe’ll create a personalised keepsake certificate, and, if you’d like, we can display it in the hospice reception on your chosen day.

Your profile on our websiteIf you’d like us to share your story with our supporters, then we will feature it on the hospice web pages. We can also publish your name or the name of your organisation on the hospice home page on the day you’ve chosen to pay for. And we can also use social media to further publicise your support.

We’ll welcome you to the hospiceThe best way we can say thank you, though, is to invite you to visit the hospice. You’ll be able to see the help, compassion and care we’re providing to people with a terminal illness and their families, thanks to your support. We’ll organise a mutually convenient day for you to visit the hospice, where you can meet some of our team.

4 Marie Curie / Pay for a Day

9am: The multi-disciplinary team arrive, including a doctor, physiotherapist, occupational therapist, chaplain, social worker, complementary therapist and pharmacist. A nurse gives the team a report from the previous evening. The team visits each patient to find out how they are, talk to their families and discuss their individual treatment and needs. This could include control of complex symptoms or rehabilitation to improve quality of life. They also liaise with family support team and the hospice chaplain to ensure patients’ emotional and spiritual needs are being met.

10am: After breakfast, nurses make their rounds and administer regular medication. Nurses and healthcare assistants help patients with washing and getting dressed. Outpatients start arriving for day therapy and to attend medical appointments and clinics organised by the multi-disciplinary team. Many make use of our rehabilitative gym and access a range of complementary therapies. These include massage, Reiki and reflexology.

A day in the life of the hospice7.30am: Nurses arrive for the morning shift, the first of two shifts a day. They receive a handover from the night nurses, detailing each patient’s care and any changes to their condition that have occurred overnight.

8am: Patients staying at the hospice have breakfast in their rooms. They can choose from a range of options, from cereal and toast to a cooked breakfast. Help is given to those who need it.

The staff were wonderful to my mum Bernadette. They looked after her so well that she was able to come home. Deirdre McKenny, whose mum Bernadette was cared for at the hospice

12.30pm: At lunchtime, people staying at the hospice are served their meals in their rooms. Family members can join them, or eat together in the the hospice’s meet and greet areas.

1pm: After lunch, there’s another medication round and patients may receive complementary therapies in their rooms. If a patient wants to go outside, nurses will take them out into the hospice’s courtyard to spend some time and get some fresh air.

Throughout the day and night, our medical staff monitor patients’ symptoms and keep them comfortable.

4pm: From Monday to Friday our volunteer receptionist arrives to manage the reception desk. This is the first point of contact for anyone arriving into the hospice. Other volunteers meet and greet visiting relatives, and assist with all enquiries from staff, patients and visitors. The hospice is supported by over 140 volunteers, all of whom are essential members of the hospice team.

4.45pm: The hospice staff serve the evening meal. The menu changes daily, and the food is freshly cooked on the premises by the catering team. The day nursing staff remain on duty until 8.30pm, when they hand over to the night staff, providing a detailed update on each patient’s condition and care.

9.30pm: Most patients begin settling down for the night. Nurses administer medication and along with the support of Healthcare Assistants make people as comfortable as possible, monitoring continually throughout the night.

Relatives can visit their loved ones any time of the day or night – and can stay overnight in their room.

It definitely lifted Mum’s spirits that we could bring her cat, Buffy, to the hospice. She really looked forward to the visits and to telling the staff about all her cats.Susan Brown, whose mum Shirlie was cared for at the hospice

Why I am paying for a dayColin Walsh, Chair of CBI Northern Ireland and founder of Crescent Capital

My dad was cared for by Marie Curie Nurses so I experienced first-hand the great work that the charity does. I’ve supported Marie Curie since then and sit on the hospice’s development board.

The hospice offers families from all over Northern Ireland access to the best possible care and support, helping them to make the most of the precious time they have left together.

CBI Northern Ireland raised funds for Pay for a Day at its 50th Anniversary Gala Dinner. I have chosen to pay for 31 December 2015, which is my dad’s anniversary. I am incredibly proud to support Pay for a Day and cannot think of a better way for the money raised at the gala to be spent.

Colin Reid, Chief Executive of TotalMobile

TotalMobile is paying for a day on 16 October 2015, in support of colleagues and friends who have had loved ones cared for at the hospice.

The date is a significant one, as it was the day in 2014

when we first exceeded our original fundraising target of £20,000.

Our team raised funds throughout 2014 and raised a brilliant £25,820.90 for Marie Curie.

The hospice is a remarkable place. It means a great deal to everyone at TotalMobile to be in a position, as part of our overall fundraising partnership with Marie Curie, to be able to pay for a day’s care. We know we’re helping many more patients and families at their time of greatest need.
