The mission of PAWS Atlanta, Inc. is to provide shelter, food and medical care for abandoned pets and ensure they are placed in safe, loving homes. The mission encompasses three goals:

• Toadvancetheno-killphilosophy

• Reducepetoverpopulationthroughspaying or neutering

• Toeducatethecommunityregardingthe responsible and humane care of pets

The Posh PAWty for PAWS Atlanta will be the year’s most entertaining and interesting event for people who love their pets. For starters it’s emceed by Victoria Stilwell, she’s the host of It’s Me or the Dog on Animal Planet.

That show is as much about training the owners, as it is about teaching the dogs how they should act in order to become a part of the family. It’s positive training, that is what Victoria has taught for years, and it’s how we train the dogs at PAWS Atlanta.

Victoria will be sharing stories from her hit show. Did you see the classic episode with the Aussi mix who was transfixed on the cupcakes? Victoria has stories like that, some training tips

and there will be a Q & A session too. This evening is for anybody and everybody-dog novices, humane society supporters, reality show aficionados, master trainers, cat lovers or PAWS Atlanta people.

This is a local event that will benefit local pets. All of your food and drinks are included with entry and being catered by Affairs to Remember. After Victoria entertains and educates us with her stories about the pet situations she has seen, there will also be a silent auction.

Every year PAWS Atlanta helps find homes for over 1,000 homeless pets. Our monthly discount vaccination clinic saves thousands of people hun-dreds of dollars on their pet health needs. Events like The Posh PAWty allow us to continue helping pets at this pace. It’ll be a fun evening out for you that will support the largest no kill humane society in the area, PAWS Atlanta. Have you purchased your ticket yet? You can purchase your ticket online at www.pawsatlanta.org or by calling 770-593-1155, x 15.

Don’t be a Halloweenie to your pets

TakingaStandagainstAnimalCrueltyby Laura L. Mckelvey

Halloween is fun and a chance for us people to dress up. For dogs and cats it can be scary with all those masks and spooky noises. What’s more it can be deadly if your pet gets into the candy or treats that you may get while trick or treating. Be sure to keep that candy in a place where your best friend can’t eat it.

Lastly be very careful of any candles! Your pet’s long tails or hair can easily catch fire, keep those candles up high and not on the floor. It’s even a good idea to keep your best friends inside, in a calm, quiet room that they’re familiar with. Turn the television on so they have some common background noise too. Be safe and don’t forget your furry friends this fall!

A 3-4 month old Australian shepherd mix named Mailin was lucky when a PAWS Atlanta em-ployee walked towards Covington

Highway to collect trash left by motorists. He found Mailin crumpled on a small white blanket with nothing to eat, drink, or contain him. Presuming that Mailin was dead, he flagged down a vet tech to help recover the body, however, Mailin was alive. He didn’t anything to keep him from wandering because he had been starved to the extent that he could not stand or bark. Mailin could have easily gone unnoticed on that hot July day, but instead was brought straight to the clinic for IV fluids and testing. The PAWS Atlanta vet techs and staff gave him around the clock attention for days. Finally, he could meander around the room, hold up his head, and even let out a few barks.

Animals come from all over the place to be sheltered and cared for by the PAWS Atlanta staff. Some of them are transferred from local animal control facili-ties that are always full and under constant pressure to take in more animals. Others are found as strays or surrendered by owners who have lost everything and can no longer care for their pet. It is always heart-breaking to hear the lonely howls of the homeless dogs in their cages, but the pets that suffer from acts of animal cruelty are always the most difficult to wrap your mind around. These pets show courage and forgiveness when it seemed impossible to have either. They have a lot to teach us about moving forward and enjoying life.

It is because of our volunteers and donors that PAWS Atlanta is able to reach out to these pets. The shelter is sustained by your generosity, but the number of ani-mals that need our help seems to be growing. Please consider making a donation to PAWS Atlanta today, or come out to the shelter to meet some of these great pets looking for a family that will love them forever. By doing either of these things you are taking an ac-tive role in saving lives in your community.

2009 Combined Federal Campaign If you work for the federal, state, or local governments please keep an eye open for your local CFC representative. PAWS Atlanta depends on donations from the CFC each year. Our CFC number is 50368 and government work-ers are a huge percentage of our annual funding. Every dollar that you donate makes a difference. It doesn’t take much, a 50¢ donation every pay period will add up.The CFC period ends in early November. PAWS Atlanta will be at some rallies this fall, please look for us!

Atlanta Pride FestivalAtlanta PRIDE Festival • Piedmont Park • Oct. 31-Nov. 1Atlanta PRIDE is back at Piedmont Park! Look for the PAWS Atlanta booth in the park during PRIDE! We’ll have some give- aways, information on pets and more.
