AUGUST 2014

It has been a very exciting year for the Cedar Bend Humane Society!!! We have experienced tremendous growth and change throughout the last year. We are very proud of ourcommunity supported facilities which include both an Intake Center to receive stray and owner surrendered animals and an Adoption Center which houses adoptable animals looking for forever homes. We are very grateful for every donation from the public and community businesses. As a non-profit organization, we rely solely upon donations to help medicate, feed, groom, spay and neuter, and provide care and shelter for the homeless, abandoned, neglected, and unwanted animals of the Cedar Valley. Cedar Bend Humane Society has been busy expanding our services by offering cat and dog boarding for personal pets. We proudly took over Aalii Country Kennels in December 2013. We are very pleased to be able to offer this much needed service to the community. We are thrilled to see Cedar Bend Humane Society Alumni visiting us at the

Aalii Kennel, as boarders. We treasure all the partnerships and relationships we held with various individuals and organizations over this last year; our local media, humane societies, animal rescue groups, veterinary clinics, low cost spay/neuter clinics, and many non-profit agencies. It is because of these partnerships that we are able to save and help so many animals. We want to welcome and encourage everyone to get involved with their local shelter. Through education, community support, and partnerships, the Cedar Bend Humane Society continues to give homeless

animals a second chance at life. We want to thank each and every one of you for your friendship and support. You have made a difference in the lives of so many animals.

President’s Message I have been President of the Cedar Bend Humane Society Board of Directors for 5 years. I am the proud “mother” of two dogs; a 10 year old Dalmatian named Pelli and a 4 year old Schipperke mix named Jackson which I fostered through CBHS and adopted. The Cedar Bend Humane Society and the community share the same mission of rescuing, protecting, and saving lives of homeless animals. Over the last year, we have experienced many changes in operations due to Animal Control contracts. The Board of Directors would like to thank the community for all of your support during this time. Please know your support is still needed to continue our mission as a humane society. We ask for your continued enthusiasm to change attitudes for improving compassion, empathy, and appreciation for the special roles the animals play. This is criticallyimportant for giving the animals the care and respect they deserve. I would like to give the Board of Directors a huge “Thank You” for your dedication to the shelter and for

your love of animals. You have all given many volunteer hours from your already packed schedules to develop a well-functioning and active Board who works extremely well with the CBHS Co-Directors. Also, I would like to give a public “Thank You” to Kristy and Karla. You both have a passion and dedication to this shelter and a love for animals that cannot be matched by anyone. And, of course, a huge “Thank You” to the staff for without them the shelter would not be open. Looking back at everything that has been accomplished, I am very proud to be part of this Board of Directors and part of this organization. We have come a long way in the last ten years. We have many exciting opportunities ahead of us!

Cedar Bend Humane Society Staff It is hard to express how important CBHS volunteers are to the animals at the shelter. They spend countless hours caring for the needs of animals and providing them with daily consistent love and exercise. Currently, there are 285 active CBHS volunteers There are 32 junior volunteers, under 18 years of age. Since May 2012,

volunteers have logged 7,163 hours toward dog-walking, events, and fund-raising. Kathy Gors has logged over 844 volunteer hours. Three interns, 4 days a week, from West High, Expo, and Quakerdale volunteer their time to exercise, socialize dogs and cats, and clean kennels. Brownie groups, Girl Scout troops, and various school groups regularly help fill food bags for the PAWS pantry. Full Circle Services visit monthly to hand out enrichment treats, toys, and walk dogs. Waterloo Target managers and several college student groups helped landscape and mulch the outside play areas and the walking trail. We can’t thank all of you enough! Are you interested in becoming a volunteer? Visit www.CedarBendHumane.org and fill out the volunteer application or e-mail [email protected].

Our Volunteers are Essential! The of the Cedar Bend Humane Society

Page 4: Paws August 2014 & Annual Report

Make sure your pet is microchipped, and always wears a collar and identification tag. If you are separated from your pet, an ID tag with a current phone number will be his or her ticket home!

If your pet is outside on a hot day, provide a way for them to cool off. Fill a child’s wading pool with cool and refreshing water for them to lay in, keep it the shade, and change the water every few hours. It is essential your pet have a source of water to drink when outside!

Don’t take your pet to crowded summer events such as concerts or fairs. The crowds, loud noises, and heat can be stressful and dangerous to your pet. Be especially aware of these threats during holidays.

Going for a ride in the car can be fun, but NEVER leave your pet in the car in warm weather; even parked in the shade with the windows open, the inside temperature can reach well over 100 degrees very rapidly! This can be fatal!

Keep up to date on vaccinations and flea treatments. Pests carry heartworm disease and are more prevalent in the summer.

Panting is a form of cooling for animals. Certain dogs such as Pekingese, Brussels Griffons, and Boxers along with other short-faced dogs do not pant as efficiently as longer-faced dogs. It is harder for them to cool down. Keep these breeds in air-conditioning!

Keep your dog off chemically treated or fertilized lawns for 24 hours after application. Be aware that plant food, fertilizer, and insecticides can be fatal if your pet ingests them.

If you happen to see a pet alone in a car during a hot summer day, alert the management of the store, call your local animal control, or call the police immediately.

Panting is a form of cooling for animals. Be on the lookout for excessive panting or drooling, this may be a sign of heatstroke or other distress.

Additional signs of possible heat stroke include reddened gums and tongue, blank stare, or rapid breathing. If your pet shows any signs of heat distress, take them to your veterinarian for a full exam.

• Cover them with a towel soaked in cool water (not cold water or ice)

• Place them in a bath of cool water• Offer Pedialyte to restore electrolytes.

• Let your pet drink small amounts of water or lick ice cubes.• A dog’s temperature naturally ranges between

100 to 102 degrees. Check your pet’s temperature regularly until it reaches a safe level.

Keep Your Pet Cool!

Signs of Heat Distress

If your pet shows any signs of distress, cool them down in one or more of the following ways:

Prolonged contact with hot asphalt or sand can burn your dog’s paws. Avoid these surfaces on hot days!

Plan your daily walk in the early morning or evening hours when the temperature is less intense. Avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the day.

Remember to keep your pet safe this summer by following these tips

Community partnerships save the lives of animals and help to continue our mission! We are grateful for the many relationships between the CBHS and other animal rescue organizations and humane societies. These partnerships have proven vital in the rescue and placement of hundreds of animals each year! One of our partnerships is with Midwest K-9 detection and consulting. This organization trains dogs for narcotics detection and patrol dogs. They partner with rescues and humane societies to find dogs that may not otherwise have a chance at adoption. The CBHS has worked with Midwest K-9 to learn how to identify the traits and temperament of individual dogs that are desirable for this program. Many of these dogs have a high amount of energy and intensity which causes them to be overlooked by prospective adopters.

Partnering for Paws!

ROBI

RUEGER Robi and Rueger are perfect examples of how community partnerships save lives!

Both of these dogs had that all too familiar story; they were in a shelter abandoned and unwanted! Robi came to the CBHS as a stray running the streets and Rueger was abandoned by his owners. Both of these dogs were young, energetic, and a little on the crazy side. They both had a high fetch drive and would do just about anything to go after that tennis ball! Midwest K-9 agreed to accept both dogs into their program for training. Now both dogs have a career in law enforcement! Robi is now living in Puerto Rico, he is a member of an agency that assists local law enforcement in finding narcotics in the schools and universities…..Robi is a narcotic dog and a very valued member of their team! Watch him at work by going to this YouTube video: USCDA PR ROBI Lockers. Rueger is now an officer with the Minooka Police Department in Minooka, IL. Rueger has not only completed his training and is certified as a narcotics detection K9, he also completed his training as a tracking and article search K9, AND he has passed all the state of Illinois certifications! We want to extend a huge thank you to Midwest K9 for your partnership and to all of the rescues, humane societies, veterinarians, foster homes and supporters…together we are able to make a lifesaving difference for many homeless animals!

Dr. Wayne Endres, D.V.M. volunteers his time and energies to the animals at the Cedar Bend Humane Society. He visits every Tuesday morning to provide veterinary care for the shelter animals. He conducts examinations, administers vaccinations and medicines as needed, and provides for the overall wellness of the animals. He has performed numerous life-saving surgeries on shelter pets: removed tumors, mended paws, healed open wounds, remedied eye issues, and so much more. Thank you also to Brookside Veterinary Hospital in Cedar Falls for providing the necessary medical facilities for these surgeries. This sweet long hair grey kitten came to the shelter with a BB in her head and Dr. Endres removed it. Other happy and satisfied patients of Dr. Endres include: Nancy, a bassett hound, her tumors were removed; Sophia, the cat whose paw was caught in a trap, needed the tip of her paw removed; Shaka, a pit bull surrendered by her owner, needed special attention because her collar was embedded in her neck; Sami, the elderly poodle with a softball sized wound on her back, needed over 12 stitches; Sabrina, a pit bull mix, needed tumors removed; Snoopy had dental surgery because of infected gums and bad teeth; Sissy, a black lab, needed an emergency c-section. Sissy’s sweet puppy, Mira, was the sole survivor of a litter of three.

Many animals come through our door needing these life-saving services. Dr. Wayne Endres has been responsible for their survival. Thank you so much for your continued compassion, time, dedication, and expert care!

Thank You Dr. Endres for all you do!

The Black Hawk County Gaming Assocation and the Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa awarded $33,100.00 to the Cedar Bend Humane Society to purchase an adoption mobile. A 2013 Nissan van has been purchased from John Deery. Sponsors and the community were invited to a ribbon cutting celebration held on Thursday, June 12. Beth Knipp, Executive Director of Black Hawk County Gaming Association; Tom Wickersham, Program Director for the Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa; Elizabeth Hackbarth, Director of Development for the Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa; members of the community and Cedar Bend Humane Society Board Members attended the celebration. The new van will allow for off-site adoptions and micro-chipping clinics, along with animal transport for

school educational programs. The van is complete with fun animal graphics and will visually represent the Cedar Bend Humane Society locally and in surrounding communities.

There’s a new adoption mobile at the Cedar Bend Humane Society!

Thank you to these organizations for making this possible!

The Cedar Bend Humane Society is a local, independent, private, nonprofit 501c3 that is governed by a volunteer board of directors. CBHS is dependent on contributions, in-kind donations, fundraising, retail store sales, grants, and fees for community services.

We do NOT receive any funds from governmental monies, except from service contracts. We do not receive any tax dollars.

CBHS prides itself on exceptional data administration and sound fiscal management. An audit is conducted by an independent certified public accountant each fiscal year.

The Cedar Bend Humane Society’s Adoption Center provides a safe haven for hundreds of animals looking for a special family! The Adoption Center can accommodate up to 40 adoption dogs and 75 adoption cats at one time. Many times, the CBHS has a variety of pocket pets waiting for new homes! Once a pet enters the adoption center, we are committed to finding it a home, and it has no time limit determining its stay. In 2013 1,281 pets (dogs, cats, and pocket pets) found new homes! Thank you to everyone who adopted and helped us give these animals a second chance at life! Staff and Volunteers work to ensure the animals residing at the adoption center stay healthy and happy while waiting for that family they can call their own! This is accomplished through the “animal enrichment” program which provides each pet with toys, food puzzles, outside exercise time, and social interaction with other pets and volunteers. The Adoption staff is a very dedicated bunch. Their goal is to help each family pick out and adopt an appropriate pet to fit their lifestyle. This is done through an application and interview process. The CBHS has quiet “meet & greet” rooms, outside exercise pens, and a dog walking trail. These areas give prospective adopters an excellent

opportunity to spend time with a variety of different shelter pets prior to taking one home! When you choose to open your home to a shelter pet, you will not only receive a new life-long companion that has been health and temperament tested, you will also receive continued support from the CBHS staff throughout your new pet’s lifetime. The Cedar Bend Humane Society knows there is no greater reward than to give a homeless animal a second chance at life!! Please adopt and help us to save more lives! Stop out to the Cedar Bend Humane Society anytime between the hours of 10:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m. Tuesday-Sunday to visit adoptable pets! They are waiting...

Black Hawk Animal Control

Intake Center The CBHS Intake Center is responsible for answering all incoming phone calls and handling all animals entering the shelter. We receive all types of animals: cats, dogs, pigs, ferrets, parakeets, gerbils, mice, rabbits, rats, guinea pigs, reptiles, and a variety of wildlife. There are many reasons why these animals arrive at the Cedar Bend Humane Society. They may be stray, abandoned, lost, sick, injured, or not wanted by their families. Animals that arrive at the shelter are examined by the CBHS medical technician. Vaccinations are given and a holding period is determined. Stray animals are held between three and

seven days depending on the requirements of the city or county in which the animal was found. If an owner does not claim the stray animal, ownership will revert to the CBHS at the end of the predetermined holding period. Every animal is evaluated according to health and temperament. Once a pet is determined to be an adoption candidate, it receives the necessary vet care and is moved to the Adoption Center where it will remain until it finds a new forever home! If you wish to surrender a pet or need help with a stray animal, please contact the CBHS intake center for additional information and surrender fees. Hours of operation 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., everyday. 319-232-6887
