President's Message

As we all comment on another year flying by & coming to an end saying 'where did the year go'? Take time to reflect on the the achievements of your year with this club. Some of us will have shed a tear as our beloved four legged family member made the journey over the rainbow bridge, others will be delighted with the sounds of new paws pattering around their home. The Bairnsdale & District Dog Obedience Club community have celebrated the successes of many of our members, competing in Dog Agility,Jumping and Obedience trials over the past twelve months. We held our AGM recently, where a few of our long serving committee members chose to take a rest and stand down from the high demands that go with the role of a committee, we have not lost their expertise, in fact we will all gain from it as they are now able to focus on their skills as trainers and pass on their valuable knowledge, as well as taking time to travel and compete with their own four legged companions. Thank you Lorna, Rocky & Trish for your hard work and dedication to this club over many years. Welcome to Linda and Amy, both joining the committee, the skills you bring to the committee and this club will be greatly appreciated. Thank you to all of our dedicated instructors, this club would not exist without you, volunteering your time each week to pass on your skills and expertise. The club is growing rapidly with ever increasing community members wanting their dog to be well socialised and behave in a safe and acceptable manner whilst in the community, this is encouraging for us all. Responsible owners are recognising the importance of educating their puppies as soon as possible from baby puppy classes at 8weeks and staying with us for many enjoyable years. The club Christmas break-up will be held on December 3rd, time for us all to relax, have fun & socialise before we head off to prepare for our own Christmas holiday in whichever style we choose to celebrate the season of Good Will. Please travel safely, remember the comfort of your dog during the summer heat, plenty of cool, fresh water, shade and if possible a 'cool coat', your dog does not need the indulgent treats of chocolates etc. over the festive season Merry Christmas

To our dogs at Christmas

Please don’t touch the goodies that we’ll leave by the door.

They’re not for you It is Santa they’re for!

You mustn’t bark or bite As he lets himself in

Despite all your instincts You must not make a din!

You see we mustn’t see him On his Christmas rounds,

and if you were to growl and bark I’d have to get up and come down.

Armed with my baseball bat, poised and ready to swing it. It would be so embarrassing

if Santa was to get it! So in order to save Christmas and no embarrassment for us,

Please be a good girl/boy and do not make a fuss.

Apple Mint Christmas Dog Bones

x 1½ cups whole wheat flour x 1 cup unbleached all purpose flour x 1/2 cup old fashioned rolled oats x 1/3 cup oat bran x 2 tablespoons dry milk x 1 ½ teaspoons dry baking yeast x 2 tablespoons chopped spearmint leaves x 1/2 cup applesauce x 2 teaspoons green or red food coloring or spinach powder (to get the color desired) x 7/8 cup water Use a bread machine, or a mixer.

x Place everything in the bread machine on the dough cycle.

x When the dough is ready, roll it to1/4” thick with a non-stick rolling pin.

x Using a mini bone cookie cutter, cut the dough into mini dog bone shapes.

x Bake at (250 0f) 121 0C for about an hour. Check to make sure that they don't get too brown.

x Turn off the oven and let the mini dog bones dry completely in the oven—This works best overnight.

x If you'd like to dress up your dog bones, why not try a little dog treat icing?

These Christmas dog treats will keep for several months, at room temperature, in your snowman cookie jar, so you can make them well ahead of the holidays.

Whether your pet has fur, feathers or fins. This is the place to visit -

SPACE PLEASE

If there is a tethered dog please do not encroach on its space or let your dog get too close. Be aware of how close your dog is getting to other dogs, don't allow contact without the other owner being aware. Space too if you see a dog on the grounds wearing a yellow bandanna.

Yellow bandanna if the dog requires space, may be over friendly and is in training to be calm, may be fearful of dogs/people, may have poor eyesight/hearing. Space please is what the owner is asking from us.

Lorna's Soapbox Well this isn't really a soapbox moment but just a reminder to train with positive reinforcement - don't forget your marker word. Let's not short change our dogs with their rewards over the Christmas break. But NILIF - they have to do something to earn their rewards - which means you need to continue your teaching/training over the break. Try to remember to not use punishment - hmmm how hard would that be if the turkey disappeared out the door in the jaws of your doggy friend??!! Once the initial rush of adrenaline/temper whatever has passed - consider how come the dog could get to the turkey in the first place - whose fault was it? Who left the door open? By this time though human instinct would have had you hurling yourself after the dog screaming abuse and possibly throwing things. Not a dignified moment for anyone. A reminder as to why we don't use corporal punishment on our dogs - punishment can increase the aggressive response in our dogs. From an article in Applied Animal Behaviour Journal based on a study conducted by Meghan Herron and her associates in the School of Veterinary Medicine - University of Pennsylvania - some statistics that may be of interest. As we use punishment/ compulsion so the aggressive responses from our dogs can increase.

I am not sure that I could control my need to punish/reprimand if my turkey was leaving in the jaws of one of my collies - I am sure there would be a lot of screaming and yelling and thrown items before my senses gathered (the problem of being human) Then I would resort to behaviour my dogs know and hopefully they will drop when asked to so I can retrieve the remains of lunch - and maybe a wash under the tap would do?? Here's hoping I am more aware than to put temptation in their way. Happy Christmas to all and keep up the training.

Our club does not support the use of electronic collars However we believe that some people will recommend the use of these devices - it is useful to be aware of the legality of their usage as well as the psychological impacts on the dog and the importance of knowledgeable and accurate training techniques. The usage is controlled under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Regulations 2008.

Other devices that may be recommended are prong collars - these are prohibited within Victoria - you cannot have one in your possession. Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Regulations 2008.

Specific legal requirements relating to anti-bark and remote training collars for dogs http://agriculture.vic.gov.au/pets/dogs/legal-requirements-for-dog-owners/electronic-collars/anti-bark-and-remote-training-collars An anti-bark collar means an electronic collar designed to modify barking behaviour in dogs, and that is activated by a dog's bark.

A remote training collar means an electronic collar that is designed to be worn by an animal to assist in modification of the animal's behaviour, and that is activated by a person through a transmitter.

You must not put a remote training collar or anti-bark collar on a dog unless you are:

x A veterinary practitioner or a qualified dog trainer; or x Acting under the supervision and written instructions of a veterinary practitioner or a

qualified dog trainer. If you are acting under the supervision and written instructions of a veterinary practitioner or a qualified dog trainer, they must review the use of the collar:

x Within 6 months of the initial physical health and temperament assessment of the dog, (i.e. the assessment that was done to confirm the suitability of using an electronic collar on the animal, as required by the Code of Practice for Training Dogs and Cats to Wear Electronic Collars, made under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1986); and

x At least every 12 months after the first review. Note that 'qualified dog trainer' is defined as "a person who meets the requirements of the regulation 49(2) of the Domestic Animals Regulations 2005".

Things to Remember over the Summer Break Please monitor the amount of exercise your dogs get during the hot weather. A sign of impending heat stress can be the upturning of the tip of the dog's tongue, other indicators may include bright red gums, hyper salivation and thickening of the saliva, disorientation, weakness, laying down and reluctance to get back up. A reminder that dog's don't sweat as we do so haven't got such an efficient 'cooling

system'. They sweat through their pads. A damp towel to lie on, sit under a shady tree with them, a shell pool full of water to paddle those feet in encourage them to sit/drop in it (don't force them as they won't even paddle then), ice cubes to chew on or dropped into their water, one suggestion is to make up some stock cubes and freeze them to drop into a little water. Beware of wet towels, they can trap the heat, do not cover the whole dog, change them often. Do not immerse dog in ice water or very cold water, this will cause blood vessels to constrict slowing the cooling process, drip water onto their tongue,

Cool mats with a gell insert can work well for some dogs, my guys tend to like finding a shade tree and excavating a large hole to lie in - I often join them under the trees. Cool coats are also available that can be damped down depending on the manufacturer can last for an hour or so in extreme heat - but no advised if you aren't home to make sure they haven't dried out. A couple of shell pools help a lot, even if they don't lie in it there is the opportunity for a paddle and there is lots of drinking water available TONGUES - if your dog's tongue is rolling up at the end this can be an

indication of heat stress Watch those pads on the concrete/bitumen, think about the heat generated on the back of a ute. Pads can be seriously burnt on a hot day, you try walking barefoot on footpath or road in high temperatures. Air temperature of 250C - bitumen is almost 520, 300 air temperature bitumen is possibly 570, 30.50 air temperature bitumen can reach 61.60. Think of this, an egg can fry in 3 min when the on a surface that is 550 and skin starts to be destroyed within 60 seconds on a 520 surface so if we ask a dog to stand on a 250 day are we beginning skin destruction of the paws?

Snakebite can be a problem in the summer months Best treatment

x Compression bandage beginning at the bite site wrapping down the limb and then back to the top

x Splint the limp, the use of compression bandage and splint reduces muscle movement and slows the progression of venom. Venom travels through the body through the lymphatic system not the blood stream.

x Remain calm and keep the dog/cat still x Carry dog/cat to the vet as soon as possible

x Ice packs can be used to slow movement of venom through the system x Vitamin C has no effect on snake envenomation - Melbourne University leading Venom Researcher.

Recommended treatment is to get the dog/cat to a vet asap for IV hydration (assists in flushing out kidneys) and anti-venom treatment/s

Prevention - clear long grass around home, water containers elevated, kennels high off the ground (snakes like enclosed spaces), removal of woodpile, rubbish, low lying bushes.

Thunderstorms and Fireworks - if you have a thunder phobic dog it is best to find it a place where it feels safe, ensure your home is escape proof Fire Season - DEPI has a P.E.T.S. list to consider. (not only for dogs but for all pets)

x Prepare to go early in the day - have medications, registration/microchip information, collars, leads, water, food, bowls, bedding.

x Enclose pets if you are going to stay, small animals inside, large animals in a safe place x Transport - decide and prepare how to transfer your dog or other animals so you are ready to go,

carriers and cages, you are advised not to have them loose in a vehicle. x Safe place - where will you go with your dog - friends/family or evacuation centre.

Christmas decorations - tinsel and glass baubles can be dangerous to a dog/puppy - chewing and swallowing such items can lead to a blockage in the gastro intestinal tract. Watch the poinsettia - if chewed it can irritate the mouth and stomach. We all like our Christmas lights but watch out for those power cords which I know can be very tasty to some dogs and most puppies Beware of some foods that are not safe for dogs to consume, keep those cooked bones away, chocolate (an overdose of this can result in hyperexcitablity, nervousness, vomiting, diarrhoea), preferably no onions, raisins. Make sure, if sharing your Christmas meals, our just handing out leftovers, that there could be extra fats in the food that may affect their pancreas - pancreatitis http://www.cedarparkanimalclinic.com/2014/05/13/take-caution-with-the-heat/

Articles for the PawPrint welcomed.
