PAW PRINTS MARCH 2020 This month’s SPOTLIGHT

Woodbridge Lions Club recently served as Valentine hosts

to the seniors at Lake Ridge Fellowship House in Wood-

bridge, VA.

A delightful buffet luncheon was served to approximately

50 residents to celebrate the festivities of Valentine Day.

A hearty entree with plenty of side dishes, beverages and

dessert was certainly a big hit with the residents.

Beautiful centerpieces were created by Volunteer Chris

Tritchler and adorned the tables with 14 attendees re-

ceiving them in a random drawing.

The sing-a-long brought many smiles, laughter and some great voices too. Lion Joe Puleo leading classic songs of both new and old renditions of

favorites to the delight of the audience. The ever popular Neil Diamond favorite of "Sweet Caroline" brought about much applause with pianist

Lion Mike Tokar bringing the music and words to life. Our event lead was Lion Dee Pfeiffer with a hearty band of eager Lion volunteers to help

make it a success. A great afternoon was had by all.

District Governor Scott McMurrain Fellow Lions, Our Winter Conference in Culpeper was a huge success! Past International President Joe Preston was our guest speaker. It was an honor to have such an esteemed Lions leader attend our conference, and he did not disappoint! With several last minute registrations, the room was filled. All of the

class sessions turned out to be very interesting, informative, and interactive. Our theme was diversity, which is the future for Lions! Today’s Lions Clubs consists of lions from all walks of life, regardless of age, race, sexual orientation, or religion. In this time of nationwide divisive-ness, it’s very encouraging to see so many people put aside their political and other differences and come together to serve to others. First Vice District Governor

In February I attended the First Vice District Governor/District Governor-

Elect (FVDG/DG-E) Seminar in the St. Charles, Illinois suburb of Chicago. It

was four days of intense activity where I had a chance to meet some of the

750 DG-Es from around the world. My classroom group of 28 had Lions

from eight different countries. Highlights of the week included a quick trip

to LCI Headquarters in Oak Brook, a photo-op with International First Vice

President Douglas X. Alexander, and several plenary sessions where de-

tails of the North America Membership Initiative (NAMI) were discussed. LCI has tasked incoming DGs

with an aggressive schedule to kickoff NAMI so you will be hearing much more about it as we begin to

develop our District goals and plans this spring.

As I write this, I am in the process of assembling my District Cabinet for Lion Year 2020-2021. I have

Lions committed for about 45 of the approximately 120 Committee Chair positions. If you have a desire

to serve the District in a key position, please contact me ASAP. I would be glad to discuss the essentials

and expectations of the position with you.

Thanks to all of the presenters at the Winter Conference. I hope those of you who attended received

great value from the Past International President Joe Preston’s keynote address and the Diversity,

LEARNS, GAT, Sight Programs, LCI 100, and LERC NOVA updates.

Lion Nanette, District Relieving Hunger chair, reports that we collected two medium sized boxes of

canned goods at the Winter Conference. Many thanks to IPDG Wilma for transporting them to the Cul-

peper Food Closet. Those boxes were indeed heavy!

Finally, I am working with LCI’s Division of Corporate Clubs, Lion Daniel Marney Elkins and PID Lewis

Quinn on a major marketing campaign to bring at least one corporate, specialty or corporate club into

the District. Details to follow…

During the month of February, District 24-L observed Black History Month with the coordination of Bland Music Competitions at

the Zone level. The month of March brings Women’s History to the forefront.

In 1987, Lions Club International voted to admit women as full members in Taipei, Taiwan. This vote allowed women to have full

membership privileges, club voting privileges, and the right to hold office positions. “The presence of women should add new life

and vitality to Lions Club International,” said Past International President in 1987, Brian Stevenson, of Calgary, Canada. “The prob-

lems of the world are too serious to limit their solution to only half of our population,” said Stevenson.

Now, after 33 years of this significant change, how is your club recognizing and empowering women in your own Lions Club? Wom-

en in our District serve selflessly in many key roles at all levels. Their contributions do not go unnoticed. Thank you for shaping the

path for the women that will follow your footsteps in Lions Club and beyond!

Recognizing the service of women of all ages in Lions and Leo Clubs is important. Does your club have a female Past District Gover-

nor, past District officer, and lady Leo leaders? Has your club considered asking them to share their service experience at your

March meeting(s) or connect them with your newest member as a mentor? Have you asked your club members, what woman has

influenced them the most in their personal or professional lives?

Acknowledging and celebrating our women heroes creates a positive and inspiring environment in the clubs. One key to member

retention is discovering shared connections. As your club gets together this month, consider acknowledging the women in each

Lion’s family. We appreciate the mothers, wives, girlfriends, nieces, sisters, daughters, or granddaughters that support Lions ena-

bling them to conduct Lions activities which many times includes being away from home to serve.

What is Leadership?

It is simply solving problems; the ability to lead or guide other indi-

viduals, teams or organizations.

An organization cannot survive without leadership. In order to

have leaders it is now time for our Lions clubs to be filling their

leadership positions. Has your nominating committee selected

officers and committee chairs for the 2020-2021 Lions year? That

part of the process should have been accomplished during Febru-

ary. If this hasn’t been accomplished, I encourage your nomina-

tions committee to complete this portion of the process as soon as

possible. The slate of officers should be presented to the club

membership in March and a vote taken in April. It is very im-

portant to follow this schedule and update the information on the

LCI website as soon as possible, but no later than May.

Our cabinet secretary uses this information to prepare our directo-

ry. If you do not input your officers our directory will contain old,

outdated information.

To aid incoming officers we provide training in two locations. This

year training will be:

Keeping your club viable: The need for active Retention:

Finding, inducting and putting to work a New Lion is exciting. The

New Member recognition for the club, the sponsor and the new

Lion is rewarding. However, sometimes we get really focused on

reaching out to new members and then find ourselves wondering

where did the other Members go? Retention, which is not as ex-

citing as a New Member drive, is key to the solvency of our clubs.

When a Member leaves it is too late to ask why and then fix the

underlying problem.

Here are some thoughts you may want to consider in assessing

your retention efforts.

Do you formally educate every new Lion about LCI, District 24-L,

your club organization and the Service opportunities in your club?

How often do your sponsors report on the participation by those

new members they brought into the club. How many of your Mem-

bers have a Mentor helping them grow in Lionism?

Does your Board ever have an agenda item on retention?

Does your club do an annual club assessment giving every member

a voice in where you have been and where are you going?

Do you recognize those steadfast Members who sometimes are

not leaders but are always there to help support your Service pro-

jects and fund-raising activities?

When was the last time a Melvin Jones award was given to some-

one not in your club for 20+ years and a past President?

Lions Worldwide Induction Day is a worldwide event that welcomes new members and gives Lions the op-portunity to stimulate membership growth and increase public awareness. Since 1917, Lions have been reaching out to people in need in their local and world communities. MEMORIAL DAY PARADE May 25, 2020

Lion Leaders, PR Chairs, Lions, LEOs and Guests; Yes! The Lions of Maryland, Delaware, Virginia and the District of Columbia are again invited to participate in the Na-tional Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 25, 2020. This will be the 13th consecutive year in which we have done so. Our Float is always decorated with the current Lions Logos/Themes. We also invite Lion Dignitaries and Local Dignitar-ies to join us on the Float. We are seen by over 300,000 people lining the parade route which extends from 7th Street to 18th Street along Wash-ington’s famous Constitution Avenue. We are seen by millions on several cable networks and streaming on websites. Those of you who have marched in previous years will remember that there were many onlookers who waved and cheered for us as we passed by and many received miniature flags from marching Lions who left the ranks to present them. To say this is the greatest Lions PR event of the year on the east coast is an understatement. Who wouldn’t want to participate? And it is a solemn honor to participate in honoring all those who have given their lives for their country, along with all who are still serving (retired or Active). You will have goose pimples as you march down that great, historic Constitu-tion Avenue passing the Washington Monument and the White House; you will never forget it. Even more unforgetta-ble is when all the noise and music and cheering suddenly stops at 3 pm – it is eerily quiet - and then you hear the sound of a single bugle playing taps. Again, you’ll never forget it! It does not take much from each club to participate: just 1 or 2 Lions to carry their club banner and a space on the float for those who cannot march. Those clubs sponsoring LEO clubs, please make every effort to get them involved. LEOs who have marched in previous parades have had a great time. Since 2015 we have had to honor of hosting Miss America, Miss USA & Miss Teen USA on our Lions Float. This has served to give the Lions Extra time at the Reviewing Stand and focuses special attention on Lions. We anticipate that this will continue in 2020. To cap it off, all parade participants are invited to a fantastic BBQ at the Virginia home of PDG “Woody” Woodard, lo-cated in northern Virginia and easily and quickly reached from the parade route. Unstoppable With our support and Leader Dogs’ expertise, more people can travel safer, easier and with greater freedom than ever before. Over the past eighty years, Leader Dogs for the Blind as grown into a state-of-the-art or-ganization providing much needed services to the blind and visually impaired community. Along with their professional staff, there are a large number of volunteers who make this unstoppable mission possible. These volunteers play a large part in their success. And a lot of them are LIONS. Some volunteers are part of this great mission from the very beginning as breeding stock hosts. These fami-lies welcome specially selected breeding dogs into their homes and foster them during the life of these spe-cial moms and dads. Last year there were 86 families who volunteered to take care of these dogs and their puppies until they are ready to be placed with a puppy raiser. Volunteer Puppy Raisers are the backbone of the guide dog program. For 12 to 15 months these volunteers give up their time, energy, and love to raise a future Leader Dog. Puppy Raisers build the foundation needed for the puppies to become a trusted Leader Dog. Last year there were 456 puppy raisers helping to keep the pipeline full of future Leader Dogs. Lastly but very important are the 594 on campus volunteers who volunteer in the canine center, the vet cen-ter, the puppy development center and with the client services area just to name a few. All of these individuals are a vital part of Leader Dogs for the Blind. Without them, fulfilling their mission would be impossible. Thanks to these volunteers and our financial support Leader Dogs for the Blind are helping their clients to be unstoppable and allowing them to be active and engaged in their communities and around the world.

Northern Virginia Lions Youth Camp Since 1958, the Northern Virginia Lions Youth Camp has provided a retreat for thousands of young people. Simply put, We

Serve! We rebuilt two bridges, renovated several cabins, and rebuilt the pavilion.

We need to rebuild our bathhouse. We received some matching funds from the Lions of Virginia Foundation, but we need additional money to complete the project. You can help us improve our facility by donating money to the Youth Camp.

Welcome Lions, Lionesses, Leos and Guests, to the 97th Annual Lions of Virginia State Convention.

Our hosts, the Newport News Denbigh and Tappahannock Lions Clubs have planned a fun-filled and

exciting convention. Enclosed you will find brochures, pamphlets and other informational material

to help you select just the right venue for your trip to Chesapeake, Virginia.

This year the convention dates are May 14-17, 2020. Make plans today to come out and attend the

best convention anywhere.

The 2020 Lions of Virginia State Convention will be held in the heart of Chesapeake, Virginia at the

Delta Hotel by Marriott Chesapeake. We are honored to have International Director Justin K. Faber

as our LCI guest. He will guide us on how we can Build Better Leaders for Tomorrow: A Ladder for

Leadership and Recognizing Leaders in your District. This will be followed by a “Town Hall” where

you can express your ideas and concerns about the future of LCI. We are excited to offer a two ses-

sion Membership Class taught by Lion Daniel Marney Elkins of District 22-D. He will share his story

and knowledge on his unique ways to grow club membership. This is a seminar not to be missed.

Please come out to the convention and give ID Justin and Lion Daniel a warm Virginia Lions wel-

come.

During the conference there will also be social time in a relaxed setting. An early bird “Dining in the

Dark” is planned for Thursday evening. Make plans to come out and dine with friends and family in

complete darkness. On Friday, the district meetings, the foundation meetings, Pin Traders Luncheon

and first plenary session are scheduled, with the James Bland Music Contest to be held on Friday

evening. The Hospitality Rooms will be open after the Bland, giving attendees a meeting place to

gather, and make plans to do fun things in Chesapeake. This will be a great opportunity to make

new friends and renew acquaintances!

One of the most important aspects of our convention is the level of educational and leadership op-

portunities available. Whether it is leadership development, membership or club officer training,

you will find what you are looking for on Saturday morning at this year’s convention. Following the

morning classes, we will hold a Memorial Service to honor all the Lions in Virginia that have passed

away this Lions year. LOVF is hosting the Saturday luncheon. This will be followed by the second

plenary session. Don’t forget to stop by our Exhibits and booths. We are offering an array of prod-

ucts, and of course, pin trading.

Enjoy the Lions of Virginia State Convention. Enjoy Chesapeake, Virginia. Your presence is an indica-

tion that you are committed to making a positive difference, not only in your own Lions Club and

1. Do you know what we do?? Invite us to your Club/Region/Zone Meetings so we can inform you as to what we

do, and how we help those with vision related issues.

2. Besides the Scholarship Grants that we offer, we also support the Lions Eye Clinic, and the Virginia Low Vision

Learning Center in Alexandria. We are also working to expand Low Vision Services in Northern Virginia.

3. Check out our “Joe Lipomi Scholarship Grant”. Please check your communities for scholarship applicants. Appli-

4. ATTENTION CLUBS: We now have board approval and a budget set aside to assist clubs that may need help

meeting the needs of people with vision related problems trying to enhance the quality of their lives. We will

work with the clubs to help when needed. This will be on a case by case basis as needed and within our budget

constraints. All we ask is that your Club has (a) Set a reasonable Budget for eye care and exceeded it. (b)

Checked with Zone/Region Chair to see if club in nearby area are able to help. If your club has done this, and still

need help, please contact us (Letter, E-Mail or Phone Call). Our aim is to make sure that you can meet the needs

of your communities.

5. Please consider including us in your budget. We are only able to do what we do because of donations by the

clubs and individual Lions. We are a 501(c)3 Organization, and part of the federal government’s Combined Fed-

eral Campaign of the National Capital Area (CFCNA), so giving is very easy. Thanks to one and all for your sup-

port, and we plan to continue trying to help those with vision-related problems improve their quality of life.

our 65th Charter Night Anniversary Dinner on Sunday, 26 April 2020 at 4pm.

An enjoyable program is being planned with distinguished speakers, great food and libations, entertainment and so much more.

The ticket cost is $38 per person and it will be hosted at the Old Hickory Golf Club located at 11921 Chanceford Drive, Wood-

bridge, VA. The attire is black tie optional. Our Club is in District 24-L, Northeast Region Zone D and we welcome you to join us.

15th annual No.VA VisionWalk to benefit the Foundation Fighting Blindness (FFB)

Sunday, May 3, 2020, Cameron Run Park, Alexandria, VA The 2020 No.Va VisionWalk flyer will begin circulating in mid January. We hope all District 24L Clubs will consider participating as

we celebrate the incredible milestone of TWO MILLION DOLLARS raised for sight saving research through this annual event. Clubs

can donate by mailing checks to Lion Davida Luehrs 11902 Winstead Lane, Reston VA 20194. Checks should be made payable to

the Foundation Fighting Blindness, you will get a tax deductible receipt from FFB. Club donations can be placed on the District

team, or clubs can have their own team, team does not need to be present on walk day, it can be a virual team. The VisionWalk

kick off luncheon with a speaker will be on Saturday, March 21 at the Metro 29 Diner.
