Justin is the oldest son of LaDonna and Jeremy Cotton. He has two younger brothers: sophomore, Jacob, and seventh grader, Josh. "My favorite class," Justin said, "is definitely speech class with the greatest person in the world, Mrs. Gordon." Justin has attended Itasca since his seventh grade. He wears #75 on the Wampus Cat Varsity Football team and plays center. His leadership and responsibilities are numerous including motivating the offensive line and protecting the ball and quarterback. "The one thing that I will probably remember most about Itasca High," Shelton said, "is all the times I’ve had to shave in the boys’ bathroom. I will also remember with fondness the laid back teachers that are not afraid to laugh and smile, especially Mrs. Cranfill, Mrs. Henning, and Mrs. Gordon." When Justin, or "Shelton" as everyone calls him, is not busy going to school or flipping burgers at Dairy Queen, you will probably find him hanging out with his buds, playing football or watching the Dallas Cowboys play. "Football is my life," Justin said. "I’m really not ready to graduate because I hear the real world is tough and I don’t get to play in front of the Wampus Cat fans on Friday night, but I do have a plan for after high school. I’m going to become the best teacher this side of Mississippi!" Come Watch the Cats take on the Zebras! Clary Joins Pre-K Team Reporter & Photographer Ashley Durham Itasca Elementary welcomes Mrs. Allison Clary to the staff as one of the three new pre-k paraprofessionals. Prior coming to Itasca, she worked at the Hillsboro library and was a substitute teacher in Hillsboro. She is really enjoying working with the "little people" in elementary. Clary graduated from Sam Houston High School and attended college for a short time. She lives in Hillsboro with her husband Ken and their children, Kasie, Kenneth and Kristen. Their eldest child Kendall attends college at East Texas Baptist University. "Working in the Pre-K is a much different environment than my last job," Clary said. "Before I was an office manager and did lots of clerical work, but I love working with these students." Meet the Press – Viddy Reyes Reporter & Photographer Mary Maddox "We’re always laughing in the Paw Print Press room," sixteen year old Viddy said, "That’s what I love most about this class - it is fun." Viddy Reyes moved to Itasca in 2001, her 5 th grade year. This is her first year to work as a member of the newspaper staff. She plans to continue working on the paper the rest of her years in high school. Viddy’s love for writing started in the 7 th grade when she competed in UIL editorial writing and placed second. Her eighth grade year she competed again and this time she brought home the 1 st place medal. Last year, Viddy wrote on the high school team and placed 4 th in district, which made her an alternative at Regional Competition. "Writing for the Paw Print Press is helping me build my writing skills," Viddy said. "I am looking forward to this year’s UIL Editorial Writing contest." Viddy’s also uses her music abilities and plays the clarinet in the band. 2006 Senior Night - October 27 All parents of senior band members, senior football or senior cheerleader should be at the field by 6:30 p.m. The senior program will start promptly at 6:45 p.m. Page 5 October 20, 2006 Paw Print Press Cats Shut Out Panthers Reporter Mark Cummings Photographers Jessica Grindele & Ashley Durham Itasca beat Maypearl 32-0 for the Cats’ first district win in two years. The Cats have decided that this year it is time to turn everything around. Mikey Marshall led the Itasca offense by scoring several times and continued to add to both his and the team’s stats. Itasca had 22 first downs and rushed 38 times for 250 yards. The Cats also had an amazing 195 passing yards. Kendale Mayberry and Tralyn Harden, Itasca’s starting wide receivers, racked up over 190 yards in the air. Marshall continues to lead in the area in 2-A passing numbers. He has 77 completions for 137 attempts for a total of 1322 yards. Mayberry and Harden also head up the 2-A list for receptions. Mayberry has 31 catches for 621 yards and 8 TDs and Harden has 21 catches for 453 yards and 3 TDs. This week Itasca will meet "The Stampeding Zebras" in Grandview. Grandview has always been one of Itasca’s biggest rivals, so this game is more than just another football game - It is for area bragging rights. Accurate figures are: Your tax rate from the county has risen 15% over the past seven years, not 202% as reported. In 1990-2000 budget years, Hill County had 120-130 employees. In 2005-2006, Hill County had 175-180 employees. That is a 35- 40% increase, not 153%, some of which was required by the State. Our 2004-2005 budget was prepared with an approximately $875,000 deficit, anticipating growth to balance the budget. Due to growth, Hill County had a $465,000 surplus, as stated by the auditor in the commissioner’s court, not the $4,000,000 reported. The Commissioners "table" items on which they want more information and consider these matters at later sessions. The Commissioners are the leaders in the budget and hold several workshops during budget preparation time. As successful businessmen in their own right, they do not just "follow the leader," and agree with every motion. LET’S STICK TO THE FACTS Keep Proven, Experienced, Honest Candidates in Office! Re-elect County Judge Kenneth Davis Elect Competent, Proven, Truthful Leadership1 Joe Daniel for County Commissioner Vote Democratic Vickie Ward, Treasurer Paid for by the Democrats of Hill County Matt Fehnel I would be honored to receive your support on November 7 and serve as Your Mayor. I have lived the great majority of my life in Itasca and I believe that I understand the challenges as well as seeing the many opportunities that are available here. I possess a degree in Government from Baylor University, so I have been trained to understand the way a city government should serve its citizens. I have served and continue to serve the community in many volunteer roles including serving both as President and Treasurer of the Chamber of Commerce in the recent past. I currently serve the citizens of Itasca as Chairman of the Zoning and Planning Committee. I care a great deal about our fair City and will work with the Council and City Employees to further the progress that has been made in our infrastructure in the past several years. Without this base of decent streets, a quality water system and reliable sewers, Itasca will not be able to move forward no matter what the many other positive features are. I know that I have the management and leadership skills that are necessary to help accomplish these tasks. On November 7, vote for Dependable Leadership. Please vote for Matt Fehnel for Mayor of Itasca. Harkins Ready to Begin Commissioner Work "I am continuing to meet people daily in Precinct 4, and I’m finding voters ready to see the County make progress. The recent State Comptroller Management Review found some good practices in Hill County government, but it also gave us a lengthy road map of things that need significant attention. I will bring strong leadership, 40 years of solid business and government experience, and a "can do" attitude to the task," said Harkins. He and his wife, Jeri, moved to their permanent home in Hillsboro in 1999, where he managed the medical practice of Dr. Brenda Harkins, their daughter. Lee and Jeri are both active in church, civic, and community affairs. Lee is a small-town Texan, born in Bellville, Texas and graduated from high school in Vernon. Jeri was born in Corpus Christi and graduated from high school in Pampa. They married in 1958 and have three children and seven grandchildren. Lee rose to the grade of Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Air Force during a 21-year career, serving for a time as a Launch Control Officer for 50 intercontinental nuclear missiles. He then worked as Fiscal Vice President and later as Dean, serving two Texas colleges and one university, where he was responsible for multimillion-dollar budgets and complex business functions. A Baylor graduate in Mathematics, he went to Texas A&M for an intense one-year special Meteorology program sponsored by the Air Force. He finished his formal education with a Master’s degree in Business through the Ohio State University, and has attended numerous seminars, special training, and refresher courses, the most recent this year. He states, "I will pursue two broad goals: 1) help get Commissioners Court into compliance as outlined in the Comptroller Management report; and 2) take a more businesslike look at taxing, spending, and county effectiveness issues. For those interested, there is an agenda and additional information on his web site: VOTEHARKINS.COM" Page 7 October 20, 2006 Paw Print Press Golf Tournament October 22 Benefits American Cancer Society Win a Ford from Lloyd Ford for a Hole-in-One Press Release A four-player scramble will take place on Sunday, October 22, at Hidden Creek Golf Course, 700 S. Page 8 October 20, 2006 Paw Print Press Rotary Update Johnny Hernandez October 5, 2006 The Itasca Rotary Club met for its weekly meeting with seven members and four guests present. Ollie Baker opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and I was honored to give an invocation. Jimmy’s Corner Store provided a delicious lunch of fried chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans and a tossed salad. Dessert was a choice of chocolate or coconut pie. Is this a wonderful country or what? October 1-7, 2006 is Texas Funeral Directors Week and the Club welcomed its newest Rotarian, Brad Shotts, the funeral director at Clayton- Kay Vaughn funeral home. Bob Wilson announced about Hill County Fair Day at the Texas State Fair on Tuesday, Oct.10 and the Chet Edwards fundraiser and rally at the Hillsboro Park. The guest speaker was Dr. Allen Lane, of Bridgeway Health Services. Their offices are in Hillsboro and they can be reached at 254-582-5735. Anyone who has a question on home health care and/or hospice care needs to give their office a call because there are many benefits available to senior citizens that we are not fully aware of and most of those benefits are free. "No one knows better about what you need than you do," Dr. Lane said. Remember to do a little something for someone and I’ll bet you’ll benefit the greatest. October 12, 2006 The Itasca Rotary Club met for its regular meeting with Jimmy’s Corner Store providing a luncheon of turkey and dressing with all the trimmings including pecan and pumpkin pie. Guests included Barry Durham from Itasca ISD and Nell Wilson and guest speaker Barry Curlee, district governor elect. Curlee began his talk with a question, which was followed by more questions and by the end of his talk, we realized that our "Little Club" does a lot for this community in a lot of little ways. Rotary is a service club! Service is our commitment not only for our area but for the world in general. Did you know that polio, a crippling disease which was spread worldwide by the mid 20th century was eradicated by the Rotarians? Once a vaccine was discovered, Rotary made it a point to make it available around the world. Water is a precious commodity which we take for granted in this country. There are countries around the world that in this modern day and time do not have the water treatment plants that we enjoy here in our country and although that seems hard to believe, it’s true. Rotary has helped many poor countries set up such plants in order to provide fresh, clean drinking water and therefore make those places healthier. Malaria was a big problem in certain areas of Mexico awhile back. With the help of a Rotary Club from the US teaming up with a Rotary Club from Mexico, working together and studying the mosquito problems, they soon came up with a solution and the malaria problem is now almost nonexistent. There are many, many things that Rotary and Rotary International are responsible for which are too many to mention here. But the most fulfilling thing about Rotary is that we meet once a week to share a meal and also get to visit with friends who hold a common bond. That is to see what we can do for our little community. So if any member asks you to come and visit and share a meal, come on down! You just might like it to a point of becoming a member. Did I mention that the food is great? Veterans Day Program Press Release The Itasca ISD & Board of Revitalization extends a special invitation to our veterans, past and present, for a special Veterans Day Program on Nov. 10, 2006 beginning at 9: 00 a.m. in the Special Events Center. We gave a partial history of his past and about his six volumes of letters from friends and famous people. I would like to mention a couple. At the end of Tex Schramm’s letter he wrote, . . . "When it comes to X’s and 0’s I am sure you still know a lot more than those blank pages, certainly more than I do. It is an honor to be included in your book with the great people you are collecting. My very warmest regards. Tex E. Schramm. At the end of Bob Hope’s letter he said "Thanks for the memories, Wiley," wouldn’t it be a treat to read all those six volumes of letters from all those celebrities. We more or less featured the 1937 team because they went all the way. However, we feel that without the contribution from the 1935 and 1936 teams, they might not have accomplished what they did. When Coach Grinnell came he took the team to Latham Springs for fall training. I guess they went there because Thousand Oaks was not available. Wendell Jordan’s brother Robert Lee Jordan was their cook for the week they went there. We have had many good football teams and coaches in our history, and perhaps we can write about those next, including Itasca’s first team ever. When we look at the competition, we feel more respect than ever for them. Teams such as Arlington, Cleburne, McGregor, La Vega, and Mart, who has always been a power house… The records for 1935 and 1936 are shown below. 1935 Season Front Row - Joe Bradley Jr., Billy E. Democratic Rally

Reporter & Photographer Devin Corbitt

On Thursday, October 12, a Hill County for Chet Edwards Rally was held in the Old City Park in Hillsboro. Also on hand to meet the voters were Hill County Judge Kenneth Davis, Precinct 2 Commissioner James Buzbee, County Attorney Mark Pratt, Precinct 4 Commissioner Candidate Joe Daniel, District Attorney and State Representative Candidate Kerry Horn, Former Court Clerk Ruth Pelham, District Clerk Charlotte Barr, Former Mayor Will Lowrance, City Council Member Edith Omberg and Aaron McGregor.

The Woodbury Band entertained those attending the $25 a plate fajita dinner fundraiser.

Edwards spoke of the reasons why he continues to run for office. He believes that both his faith and his family instilled the obligations of giving back to others, to make our district and country a safer place, and to make sure every child has the chance to reach their God-given potential. He also spoke about his two sons J.T., 10, and Garrison, 9, and his wife Lea Ann.

"Please ask people to take some common sense to the polls," Edwards concluded. "I feel it is a privilege to serve our district and country and I appreciate your vote."

Justin Shelton

Photographer & Reporter Sarah Evans

Caricature by Gabby Rivera

"Be yourself, give 110%, and never be afraid to kiss and love your mamma," is the advice 18-year-old Justin Dale Shelton gives to others and lives by himself.

Justin is the oldest son of LaDonna and Jeremy Cotton. He has two younger brothers: sophomore, Jacob, and seventh grader, Josh.

"My favorite class," Justin said, "is definitely speech class with the greatest person in the world, Mrs. Gordon."

Justin has attended Itasca since his seventh grade.

Gordon."

When Justin, or "Shelton" as everyone calls him, is not busy going to school or flipping burgers at Dairy Queen, you will probably find him hanging out with his buds, playing football or watching the Dallas Cowboys play.

"Football is my life," Justin said. "I’m really not ready to graduate because I hear the real world is tough and I don’t get to play in front of the Wampus Cat fans on Friday night, but I do have a plan for after high school. I’m going to become the best teacher this side of Mississippi!"

Clary Joins Pre-K Team

Reporter & Photographer Ashley Durham

Itasca Elementary welcomes Mrs.

"Before I was an office manager and did lots of clerical work, but I love working with these students."

Meet the Press – Viddy Reyes

Reporter & Photographer Mary Maddox

"We’re always laughing in the Paw Print Press room," sixteen year old Viddy said, "That’s what I love most about this class - it is fun."

Viddy Reyes moved to Itasca in 2001, her 5th grade year. This is her first year to work as a member of the newspaper staff. She plans to continue working on the paper the rest of her years in high school.

Viddy’s love for writing started in the 7th grade when she competed in UIL editorial writing and placed second. Her eighth grade year she competed again and this time she brought home the 1st place medal. Last year, Viddy wrote on the high school team and placed 4th in district, which made her an alternative at Regional Competition.

"Writing for the Paw Print Press is helping me build my writing skills," Viddy said. "I am looking forward to this year’s UIL Editorial Writing contest."

Viddy’s also uses her music abilities and plays the clarinet in the band.

Cats Shut Out Panthers

Reporter Mark Cummings

Photographers Jessica Grindele & Ashley Durham

Itasca beat Maypearl 32-0 for the Cats’ first district win in two years. The Cats have decided that this year it is time to turn everything around.

Mikey Marshall led the Itasca offense by scoring several times and continued to add to both his and the team’s stats. Itasca had 22 first downs and rushed 38 times for 250 yards. The Cats also had an amazing 195 passing

yards.

Fellow Citizens & Taxpayers

You have received information about Hill County’s finances with several very incorrect figures. Accurate figures are:

Your tax rate from the county has risen 15% over the past seven years, not 202% as reported.

In 1990-2000 budget years, Hill County had 120-130 employees. In 2005-2006, Hill County had 175-180 employees. That is a 35-40% increase, not 153%, some of which was required by the State.

LET’S STICK TO THE FACTS

Keep Proven, Experienced, Honest Candidates in Office!

Re-elect County Judge Kenneth Davis

Elect Competent, Proven, Truthful Leadership1

Joe Daniel for County Commissioner

Vote Democratic

Vickie Ward, Treasurer

Paid for by the Democrats of Hill County

Matt Fehnel

I would be honored to receive your support on November 7 and serve as Your Mayor.

Harkins Ready to Begin Commissioner Work

"I am continuing to meet people daily in Precinct 4, and I’m finding voters ready to see the County make progress.

For those interested, there is an agenda and additional information on his web site: VOTEHARKINS.COM"

Rotary Update

Johnny Hernandez

October 5, 2006

The Itasca Rotary Club met for its weekly meeting with seven members and four guests present.

October 1-7, 2006 is Texas Funeral Directors Week and the Club welcomed its newest Rotarian, Brad Shotts, the funeral director at Clayton-Kay Vaughn funeral home.

October 12, 2006

The Itasca Rotary Club met for its regular meeting with Jimmy’s Corner Store providing a luncheon of turkey and dressing with all the trimmings including pecan and pumpkin pie.

Do You Remember . . . ? – Itasca Football 1935 & 1936

Columnist Carl Sweeney

In our last column we wrote about the so-called "Glory Years" of Itasca football when Wiley Grinnell came to Itasca to teach Ancient Medieval History and to coach football and track. We gave a partial history of his past and about his six volumes of letters from friends and famous people. I would like to mention a couple. At the end of Tex Schramm’s letter

he wrote, . .

Alecia Evans

This week, October 15-21, is nationally recognized as School Bus Safety week. It is a continuing education program designed for the promotion of school bus safety. These bus drivers include Linda Bassett, Sam Sherber, Gary Cotton, Debbie Rasco (picture missing), Will Johnson, Pattie Miller, and sub Blake Johnson. Although these drivers are usually not recognized for their work and dedication, they are greatly appreciated by their school and community who would like to extend to them a "thank you" for a job well done.

Hydration Technicians

Photographers Jessica Grindele & Ashley Durham

Football is long and tiring for the players. But when the Cats are in need of some relief, the Hydration Technicians are always there to bring them a cold, refreshing bottle of water. This year’s masters of H2O include Demietric McVea, Coleby "Cole" Coleman, Brandon Kelly, and Tristan Prescott. The Hydration Technicians’ job is not only bringing water to the Cats, but also to wipe and carry the football to the referee when changing sides. They are an important part of the football crew.
