What’s hot for Spring 2013?The Highlights
Jewellery: sparkly and shiny for the neck, dangling and bold for the ears, rigid and stiff for the arms. Stock up on: chain details, colour accents and anything that screams embellished and luxurious.
Collarless: bye, bye collars on blouses or shirts. High-necked, round-neck or plunging, collarless shirts and blouses replace the traditional shirt. Slash necked tops replace the v-neck and round neck tees.
The Skirt:Midi all the way! Or else, Super short or floor-sweeping. No in-betweens. Mix and match fabrics, textured and patterns to your heart’s content.
029ISSUE 4 S/S 2013
The Crop:Bare midriffs and cropped trousers are all in! Make sure your figure is suited though. Proportion is key to mastering this trend.
Accessories: Bold and attention-seeking. Shiny and loud. Perspex is huge – be it Perspex clutch bags or even Perspex chunky heels – accessories should scream ‘look at me!!’.
The Jacket: the modern take on the classic jacket is the introduction of curved shoulders, loads of volume and different textures such as satin, boucle’ and lace.

Born in 1987, Karl Cutajar started exploring fashion photography
some 3 years ago. His work has also very recently been featured in Vogue Photo Italia, marking it as
the best of the best.
“There is so much more to photography than just hitting the shutter. Each final photo
is the end result of a laborious feat, masterminding all the
different elements that make up the perfect picture – lights, location, Look, model, framing,
and many other factors. The end result is a fluid image captured at the perfect moment in time, flawlessly conveying a message
of inherent beauty.”

The spring / summer 2013 trends have graced the catwalks and whether you love it or hate it the bold lip trend is still very much a hit. Red lips are seen on the catwalks of Burberry, Prada and Oscar de la Renta. Shades are ranging from scarlet’s and pink hued reds to dark cherry’s.
First step on choosing red lipstick is know your skin colour: Look at the colour of your veins (inner arm) if you have blue veins, your skin is cool-toned; if they are green coloured, it’s warm-toned. A blue-based colour has a cool undertone, while an orange-based colour will have a warm undertone.
1. Apply lip liner to prevent the lipstick bleeding.
2. Use a lipstick brush to apply lipstick within the lip liner.
3. Blot the lips with a tissue
4. Reapply the lipstick
If you are going to use gloss, apply a very small amount in the middle of your lip.
HOT SS2013 SPRING/SUMMER TREND
044 ISSUE 4 S/S 2013
2012: the re-emergence of fashion.
Three budding designers mark the way for new imagination and outstanding glamour.
2012 will make it in the history books. Not only about the hullabaloo concerning the end of the world, the world disasters, the Arab Springs and the tragic deaths of many people, but also about the wonderful contribution many creative people have made to the fashion world.
Their names are common, their imagination stupendous and their designs outstanding! Felicity Brown, Wes Gordon and Mary Katrantzou all have one thing in common – the desire to design wonderful clothes.
by MAriA MiChELA
Felicity Brown
This British designer gained a thorough experience of fashion whilst working with Alberta Ferretti, Mulberry and Lanvin. After working for such important names, she decided to set up her own label.
Brown loves ruffles, and outrageous pieces. Her designs try to capture poetry, romance and a high voltage of glamour. No wonder Harper’s Bazaar believes that her designs are “like paintings on a gallery wall”. Brown has the fashion world aflutter!
045ISSUE 4 S/S 2013
046 ISSUE 4 S/S 2013
Wes Gordon
This Georgia lad worked with the likes of Tom Ford and Oscar de la Renta. His designs are Brooklyn girl meets Manhattan Upper East Side – very Gossip Girl like.
His designs are aggressive, yet still feminine and sophisticated. He strives for freshness and elegance. Every season, since 2009 he has nailed it, producing a new take on glamorous dressing.
047ISSUE 4 S/S 2013
Mary Katranzou
Every since graduating from St. Martin’s College in 2008, this Greek lady’s collection revolves around luxurious items and art.
All one needs to do is look at her designs to remain open-mouthed. Katranzou’s designs are simply unbelievably amazing.
Her collections are now also available in over 200 high-end fashion shops, which means that we can get our hands on them and have hang them in our closets, now that they’re affordable.
The names of these three designers with so much potential will definitely make the fashion history books, along with names such as Chanel and Louis Vuitton.

LOVE BRAND & Co.
Oliver Tomalin
CLASSIC SHORTS SS13 COLLECTION LOVE BRAND & Co. is the brainchild of London designer Oliver Tomalin. This socially responsible lifestyle brand is taking our waters by storm. Set up 2011, the company is expanding through a series of ready-to-wear products, each intrinsically dedicated to elephant conservation. The first line of ‘Classic Shorts’ is inspired and motivated by the plight of the iconic Asian elephant. Tomalin saw a great opportunity to help the Elephant Family charity in a credible and savvy way, by creating his superbly designed luxury label. This Spring / Summer ‘13 collection of Classic Shorts by Love Brand & Co. has a mid-length European cut, loosely tailored for a stylish and comfortable fit in a wide selection of 15 block colours, 5 stripes and 12 limited edition prints. Each is available across 8 sizes for men and boys. This new collection acknowledges ethnic, retro, floral and vintage trends as well maintaining the playful and fresh style Love Brand & Co. is popularly known for. The product design is thoughtful with notable details including the alloy drawstring aglets in the shape of elephant tusks. The connecting element is even stained red to act as a symbol of ivory poaching. The signature stamped eyelets are also used both for sport water escapes on the back and on the front waistband for smooth running of the durable weave drawstring. The high performance Japanese nylon fabric is extremely quick drying and is beautifully constructed. For the care of the garment, they are presented in a reusable drawstring travel bag and a swing-tag which communicates the products charitable donation, complete with the Love Brand & Co. logo with 2 elephants coming together to form a heart. Fans can feel good from both their designer apparel and their donation to an important cause. 5% of sales by Love Brand & Co. are donated to elephant charities. Tomalin, calls his concept ‘Bisociation’ adopting the term coined for the conceptual blending of elements drawn from two previously unrelated mediums. He suggests a deeper cultural shift where consumers will start to consciously and sub- consciously associate products with charitable giving.

This British luxury swimwear brand, for men and boys, following the “Bisociation” concept, adopting the term coined for the conceptual blending of elements drawn from two previously unrelated mediums, has joined Elephant Family, the UK’s biggest funder for the endangered Asian elephant, with the idea of helping to stop the animals from the extinction.

The charity partner Elephant Family, founded by Mark Shand, brother of The Duchess of Cornwall, exists to save this iconic animal from extinction in the wild, along with tigers, orangutans and all the other animals who share their habitat. Working with local people and partner NGO’s, Elephant Family fund x 12 projects across Asia and invest where the
charity is needed most: to protect habitat, prevent conflict and reconnect the forest homes of the endangered Asian elephant.

I think that fashion gives a certain amount of freedom to people and allows them to be who they want to be; feeling of personal expression and an identification in society. I tend to describe it as an extension of my personality as it really brings out the mood that I would be in.
WHAT DO yOU THINK ABOUT FAShiON AND STYLE?
There’s just something about the right choice of outfit or buying a fabulous pair of shoes or simply just entering a shop-ping mall that can bring out certain confidence in me and the effect it leaves on me as opposed to the way I look. It’s incredible!

Tell us a bit about yourself.
I’m a 17-year-old sixth form student from Gozo with a passion for fashion, photography and art. The interest I now have in fashion, photography and art all started from internet-browsing during my free time. In fact I get a lot of inspiration for photoshoots and fashion from blogs and vlogs, such as ‘tumblr’ and ‘lookbook’. Two of my favorite online bloggers are definitely “The Fashion Citizen” and “Clothes Encounters”. I recently had the opportunity to style and choose outfits for a fashion show by well-known brands.
Describe your fashion style in three words. Contemporary, Versatile and Fun.
What are you into this winter?
This winter I’m loving my olive green anorak jacket and collar necklaces that add a feminine touch to every outfit! My favourite colours for this winter have to be maroon and olive green.

Fashion staple that you cannot live without?
Definitely the LBD (little black dress), it’s that dress that will never go out of style. It is very versatile and I can wear it to many different occasions and accessorize it in many different ways.
Do fashion and style play an important part in your photography?
yes of course since my photos are mainly about fashion and portraits rather then landscapes and scenery. Good styling in a photo instantly catches the viewer’s eye.
What intrigues you most about the fashion world whilst you’re behind the lens?
The ability to combine the type of fashion style to the venue or location chosen for the photo-shoot.
Portraits or landscapes? Why?
Portraits since I like to capture emotions, facial expressions and the natural beauty of the people in the photo.

Your favourite photograph?
I honestly don’t think I have a favourite photograph since there are so many talented photographers out there! But I recently came across a photo which got me intrigued and absorbed in its detail; it’s a photo from a recent Vogue photo-shoot by leading fashion photographer, Russell James, featuring the model Kendall Jenner. His photos have a provocative and unique perspective of many of the most prominent women of our time.
What do you think is the most effective social platform for a photography portfolio?
I think that facebook and tumblr are the most effective and most popular social platforms right now, not just for a photography portfolio, but an opportunity for all to showcase their talents.
Would you like to develop your career further? How?
yes, but for now I just enjoy shooting photos during my free time. I always carry my camera with me wherever I go for I believe that the best photos are the spontaneous ones. Also I want to develop further my talent in art and design, as it is another means through which I can express my emotions.
