Journey of IPv6 Transition – Overview
To start our journey in IPv6 transition, it is important to look at the readiness from the customers end-point to the final content

IP Ecosystem – State of IPv6 Today in Singapore
Aware of the need to start planning for IPv6 transition
Increasing demand from local industry
IPv4 is exhausted and started IPv6 migration
Want to ensure that they are ready before the demand arrives
Enterprises’ need to deploy IPv6 in their data centre will put pressure on equipment’s IPv6 compliance
Racing to upgrade the devices and ensure IPv6 compliance to meet market demand
Market leaders want to be ahead in the market
Wants to ensure readiness before demand arrives
IDC report indicated that 95% of all global content on the Internet is projected to be reachable by IPv6 subscribers by 2016
Aware of the need for IPv6 transition and have a strategy to do so
Typically, ISPs have IPv6 peering upstream
SGIX and SOX are IPv6 capable

1. Prepare Govt agencies in adopting IPv6 in 2012
2. Develop IPv6 competency
1. Share information on IPv6-ready products / services
2. Engage them to address product gaps
1. Create awareness of ecosystem & industry readiness, locally & globally
2. Align & support them in the IPv6 transition (e.g. grant, technical gaps)

Challenges of IPv6 Transition
1. IPv4 already exhausted and Internet service providers providing Internet access are among the first to have to address this
2. IPv6 transition / deployment is happening now but there is lack of Security Awareness Skilled Personnel Business Case
3. IPv6 adoption is picking up but slow
4. Certain industry sector may not have the luxury of time to avoid the inevitable

Hunger for IP connectivity & accessibility indicate that
business continuity is important
2. Accessibility of IPv6 in Singapore is significant in APNIC

“Our users will eventually move over to IPv6 so if we don’t support the technology, they won’t be able to access our website in future. “From a business perspective, supporting IPv6 also means we won’t have to worry about running out of Internet addresses when we roll out new services,” said its IT director Tan Jinglun
1. Three-man team in mid 2004 to 40 employees.
Website - 630,000 visits / month
2. Business expansion into Indonesia & other
emerging markets
3. Took 6 months to upgrade its network
4. Dual-stack migration method
IPv6 Case Study for Content Providers
1. Serves over 80,000 corporate customers with 10
million jobseekers
2. Alignment with overall initiative to make Gov’s
online services accessible via IPv6
3. Most challenging part was to get IPv6 connectivity
into its co-location network
4. Investment was relatively modest
“As the Internet community deploys IPv6, we will have to be prepared as there will come a point when customers will not be able to use IPv4 networks to access our services. Moving to IPv6 ensures our services will continue to be accessible to users before everyone else - when IPv6 takes off.” said its IT business development and operations manager, Ted Targosz
