Paulinenpflege Winnenden The Paulinenpflege Winnenden (Pauline Social Welfare Service of Winnenden) is an important social institution deeply rooted in its region of the Rems-Murr district near Stuttgart. It can look back on nearly 200 years of operation. Over the time, the Protestant establishment has de- veloped a broad selection of services at different locations for young persons and persons with disabilities. The Paulinenpflege Winnenden would like to present itself as a future-oriented organization which com- bines its religious principles of social welfare with contemporary ped- agogical ideas. Renewable energy The state-of-the-art, sustainable energy supply concepts of the Paulinenpflege aim to replace fossil fuels in different buildings in and around Winnenden with innovative technologies such as heat pumps, ice storage air conditioning, waste heat usage and wood chip heat- ing. In the first step, four of the eleven Paulinenpflege locations were renovated for energy efficiency with the remaining buildings soon to follow in the coming years. About Paulinenpflege Paulinenpflege Winnenden e.V. is a Protestant facil- ity for young persons and persons with disabilities founded in 1823 by pastor Friedrich Jakob Heim in Winnenden (approx. 20 km north-east of Stutt- gart). The name is in reference to Queen Pauline of Württemberg (1800–1873). The social work of the Paulinenpflege encompasses the areas of help- ing those with disabilities, vocational education for people with hearing and speech impairments and caring for adolescents and young children. At its eleven sites in Winnenden and the surrounding area, more than 1,400 employees help around 1,500 people in need of care and support with room for 3,600 treatment places. www.paulinenpflege.de About Funk engineers The Funk engineering office located in Winnenden was founded in 1970 by Diploma Engineer Gerhard Funk who now runs the office together with his son, Diploma Engineer Claus Funk. Their professional team works as consultants, planners and supervisors of technical building equipment (heating, cooling, ven- tilation, plumbing, electrical engineering and building automation). Wood chips instead of oilAt the Paulinenhof location on the outskirts of town in Winnenden-Hert-mannsweiler, the Paulinenpfl ege runs an organic, agricultural operation with 100 ha of land which offers around 30 persons with disabilities housing and employment. The site consists of agricultural facilities, of-fi ces, residencies for the employees, housing for staff members and a farm shop.

At the end of 2014, the Paulinenhof received a new heating plant promi-nently located in the heart of the premis es. The six old oil boilers were taken out of operation and replaced with a wood chip heater. Just a sin-gle oil boiler still serves as a backup for emergencies and peak loads. The wood chips are automatically transported from a 130-cubic metre bunker into the boiler. The heat is car-ried via a large backup buffer to the

different buildings and greenhouses as well as to the “Blaue Arche” (Blue Ark), an assisted living residence for people with severe disabilities which provides art therapy.

The SAUTER modu525 automation stations regulate energy fl ow in the new heating system in the Paulinen-hof and use BACnet to integrate the other systems. The web-based visu-alisation solution, moduWeb-Vision, provides an overview and control on site.

Renewable system for heating and cooling with iceAt the end of 2013, the Paulinen-pfl ege fi nished the new vocational school building on the Lange Gas-se road in Winnenden, which cen-tralized the previously widespread, out-dated school sites. Classes at the new, handicapped accessible building are attended primarily by young persons with limited hearing and speaking ability.

Innovative strides were made to heat this new building. The engineering offi ce, Funk, designed an ice storage

air conditioning system, which pro-vides heat in the winter and cooling in the summer. A 340-cubic metre water tank was built underneath the building. In winter, heat is drawn from the medium via three brine/water heat pumps for heating – this slowly turns it to ice. In summer, the ice is, in turn, used for cooling as it thaws.

Up to 35 °C warm water can be pumped into the underfl oor heating to heat the rooms. Solar/air ab-sorbers on the roof of the building collect heat from ambient air and solar rays which is stored in the ice storage unit or directly distributed to the heat pumps. The server room also provides around 30 kW of waste heat and is therefore an additional heat source for the Paulinenpfl ege. This is also used to regenerate the ice storage unit.

SAUTER modu525 automation sta-tions inside the building and vari-ous other SAUTER fi eld devices like temperature sensors, valves, and ac-tuators keep all rooms comfortable. Here, the engineers also used the

building management system, SAUTER Vi-sion Center, to perfectly balance the control and monitoring of heat pumps, ice storage and solar energy.

Completely renovated rehabilitation work-shopSince 1989, the Paulinenpfl ege has run a rehabilitation workshop for people with mental illnesses in the neighbouring town of Backnang. The workshop named “Beim Erlenwäldchen” (By the Alder Grove) offers a safe environment for people who have diffi culty fi nding work in the general labour market. Workers receive support, coun-selling and guidance from personnel staff.

In the scope of building renovations, both rehabilitation workshop buildings received a combined heat and power unit with a gas boiler and controls using SAUTER technolo-gy. Renovations were also made to the hot water supply and ventilation for the kitchen, main offi ce, changing rooms and the ad-jacent gymnasium. SAUTER modu525 automa tion stations and numerous SAUTER fi eld devices were installed in this location.

New life in the old post offi ceThe Paulinenpfl ege also acquired the his-toric post offi ce in Backnang built in 1921 and renovated it from the ground up. In the spring of 2015, occupants of an out-dated residence hall on the edge of the town were moved to the newly created, handicapped accessible residence and meeting centre

near the heart of the town. 19 places of resi-dence are provided here for people with mental disabilities, most of whom perform work in the Paulinenpflege’s Backnang workshops.

Of course the five-storey building was also brought up to the highest standards in ener-gy efficiency with complete renovations of the heat ing, ventilation and plumbing systems. The outer walls had to be insulated from the inside – due to this being a listed building. The measur-ing, control and regulating systems were also re-placed. This was done with the visualisation so-lution, SAUTER moduWeb Vision, and SAUTER modu525 automation station expanded with I/O modules. A combined heat and power unit from Viessmann was connected to the automati-on station via Modbus. Various temperature sen-sors, valve and damper actuators from SAUTER’s product range were selected for the field level.

Everything available at a glance with SAUTER Vision CenterTo ensure the Paulinenpflege’s technical personnel can monitor the building and energy management of the dispersed premises, the new vocational school building, Paulinenhof and the renovated sites in Backnang are coordinated with SAUTER Vision Center as the over-arching solution. All four sites are bundled and their sys-tems are centrally visualised and controlled. The personnel can mon itor the various buildings at all times, even on the go with mo-bile devices. Any possible alarms are displayed on mobile devices without delay.

In pursuit of its innovative sustainability strategy, the Paulinenpflege Winnenden will progressively upgrade the energy efficiency of the other sites. Thanks to the flexibility and expandability of SAUTER Vision Center, their integration into the overall system will work without fail.
