Paul Brown in the studio 2009

Paul Brown began exhibiting nearly 20 years ago and as the decade draws to a close he will be a holding a one-off Studio exhibition in Ditchling. The exhibition contains a fine series of marine paintings, English land-scapes, Venetian pictures, beach scenes and a painting of New York.Brown has a wide range of painting techniques and he applies different painting styles to a variety of subjects. His goal is to create mood and feeling through paint, and he believes the subject, to a degree, dictates his painting approach.No. 25. Gondola Poles on The Grand Canal, Venice, he uses a relatively loose handling of paint combined with subtle blended brush work to cre-ate a romantic view of Venice. In contrast, the cover, No.1. Summer East Head, Triptych. has a more contemporary execution of paint. This is a truely stunning painting and although the reproduction is excellent, it does not do the picture justice. The triptych format gives the sensation of being at the ‘scene’, and would make a wonderful addition to any collection.Brown’s recent trip to Cornwall has resulted in two new seascape paint-ings. No.34. Incoming Tide, Porth Chapel, has a glorious feeling of movement and openness. It is as though you can smell the sea air and hear the waves while viewing the painting. In contrast, No. 35. Waves, Porth Chapel, captures the power of the sea.A trademark of Brown’s paintings are his clouds. He has a wonderful abil-ity of capturing the subtle tones of the passing clouds over a summer field. A fine example of this is No. 12. The distant Farm House. In contrast, his beach scenes of children convey a sense of joy and play-fullness, particularly No. 30. & 31.Brown regularly works to commission and examples can be viewed on his website www.sanguine-fine-art.co.uk/commissions/htm
