Project SummaryRetro fit the controls system of a municipal water/wastewater system.Replaced PLC controls, added a cellular network between plants and city hall, added remote monitoring and control of wells and lift stations.Designed and implemented five independent Indusoft SCADA servers for local and remote monitoring and controlling of the new controls system.

4

Issues with Previous SCADA SystemRemote access was limited to a single HMI screen installed in the maintenance shop at city hallThe remote screens allowed for only limited control (mostly just for monitoring)Many setpoints/pump roles, etc for the control scheme were hardcodedNo longing of data or alarms

5

Project GoalsAutomated logging of process valuesGenerate Alarms/Warnings Generate ReportsRemote monitoring and controlImprove usability/flexibility of interface

6

Why ?Quick development cycleDatabase connectivityRemote access via webReportingAlarming (emails)Low price pointExpandability

Network Topology

4 independently controlled water plants and 1 wastewater plant

Each plant was networked back to the network at city hall via a cellular modem and an industrial firewall/vpn applianceVpn tunnels were set up between each plant and a firewall/vpn appliance sitting on below the original city hall network.

We wanted to allow users on the city hall network to be able have access to web thin client screens at each plant, but wanted to restrict access to the networks at each plant in order to reduce traffic over the cellurlar networks and to prevent any malicious or accidental interruption of the network traffic

To achieve this, we are actually hosting the webpages on a webserver at city hall that is behind the industrial firewall. The only traffic allowed through the firewall from city hall is webpage traffic directed at that server specifically.

8

Web Tunnel Gateway

In order for thin clients to be able to display a project, they must be able to communicate with both the webserver and then data serverOur topology blocks direct access from clients to the data serverWTG provides routing for the packets sent back and forth to the data server

A webthin client needs both access to the webserver serving the pages as well as to the Indusoft Data server (in our case the server running IWS at each plant)

To make this happen we need to use the Web Tunnel Gateway to allow web thin clients on the outside of the firewall to receive project data (current tag values, etc) 9

Short CutsUse of different tools increase efficiencyClass TagsLinked SymbolsScreen GroupsTemplate Screens

Any time you can make something modular and repeatable, you can save time (upfront engineering, debug, changes down the road)

Within Indusoft some ways to do this is with:

Class Tags Define a data structure that get reuse multiple times.Procedures Scripts that can be called multiple times in multiple areas of the code, repeated functionsScreen Groups (*** Frames in HTML ***) Navigation bar in header only has to be developed and changed once, when separated out into smaller screen sectionsTemplate Screens Once I have design my base screen, I save it off as a template screen, then copy and paste as needed16

Class TagsDefine a structureLives in one placeCan be reusedArrays

Class TagsDefine a data structure anytime you have a structure of data that is repeated its probably a good time to use a classIf structure changes, you only have to edit the class, not create/delete a bunch of tags

*** Jump to Indusoft to show the class and tag screens ***17

Linked SymbolsSimilar to Faceplates in other SCADA/HMI packagesLives in one placeCan be used/reused multiple timesCan pass in tags (including class tags and their elements)

Only have to make onceLess chance of copy and paste errorIf a change is required, you only have to go one place****** Animation to show re used symbol *****Flip over to Indusoft to show parameter naming conventionTrick to getting child tags of a class tag

Template ScreensBlank screenFormatted as desiredWhen a new screen is needed, open template, Save As
