PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
INTERNATIONAL GUESTS FROM CHINA
On July 24th 2017, we will be greeting 12 students and 3 staff
from Hou Bao Ying Primary School, Nanjing, China.
We will be hosting them in our school until Monday, July 31st
2017. This is a great opportunity for the students and families
of our school to gain an understanding of another culture. I
would like to thank the generosity of the staff at Patterson
Lakes Primary School — the Walker family, the Wiseman
family, the Kerr family, the Bowly family, the Morris family, the
Fernandez family, the Mayes family and the School Council
Presidents’ family, the Dargans, who have volunteered to host
the 15 guests in their homes.
Their school is a roller skating demonstration school, among
other feats! The link to the web page is attached for your

THE SCHOOL DISCO EVENING
A very big thank you to Michael Wilkinson, Rene Buckett and
their FFFA team, staff members and parents who assisted on
our very successful disco night!!

On Tuesday, July 25th, we will be celebrating our Languages
and Cultural Day. Students are encouraged to dress in the
National Colours/costume of their area of study.

UPGRADES TO SCHOOL FACILITIES
Many families will have noticed the new carpet and paint work
in the Year 6 Learning hub. These works will continue
throughout the school during the term breaks. This week at
School Council, approval was received for a new sound
system, curtains and staging for the hall to support our
performing Arts program. With our production to be held in the
last week of Term 3, this will be an asset to our school!
The FFFA team have worked hard already this year, in support
of these works, and I would like to thank the FFFA team, and
the broader school community for their support of our
wonderful school!
PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
EDUCATION REPORT
This week, the Term 2 Education Report was uploaded to the
school webpage. I would like to acknowledge the hard work of
all staff who contributed to this very comprehensive report, to
provide families and the broader community a comprehensive
review of the programs within the school. I encourage all
families to read the report and ask questions of their children as
to their views of the programs in our school. Elements of many
of the programs will be highlighted within the newsletters in
Term 3.
I would like to draw your attention this week to two of the
programs operating in the school, Critical and Creative Thinking
one of the new Victorian Curriculum Capabilities coordinated by
Ms Patty Lamaro, and Assessment and Reporting coordinated
by Mr Jason Zarb.
Critical and Creative Thinking
The new Victorian Curriculum includes four 'capabilities’ for
student learning across all subjects. It is expected that the skills
and knowledge defined in the capabilities will be developed,
practised, deployed and demonstrated by students in and
through their learning across the curriculum.
The capabilities are: ‘critical and creative thinking’, ‘ethical’,
‘intercultural’, and ‘personal and social’. All of the
capabilities promote collaboration, perseverance, problem
solving, empathy and self-reflection in the classroom.
Currently, there is a trial being supported by the Mitchell
Institute involving eleven schools. The Critical and Creative
Thinking (CCT) team, plus members of the School
Improvement Team (SIT) attended a day of professional
development on Monday 5th June. Bill Lucas, international
adviser of the Mitchell Institute and educational expert, shared
some of his knowledge and expertise, and we were involved in
some hands-on activities that encouraged us to be ‘critical and
creative’ thinkers.
The critical and creative thinking capability aims to ensure that
students develop:
understanding of thinking processes and an ability to
manage and apply these intentionally
skills and learning dispositions that support logical,
strategic, flexible and adventurous thinking
confidence in evaluating thinking and thinking processes
across a range of familiar and unfamiliar contexts.
The aim of the CCT team is to ensure that staff across all year
levels develop a clear understanding of the CCT capability, and
an awareness of how we can best create environments in our
classrooms that are conducive to critical and creative thinking.
The CCT team will also ensure that effective resources, ideas
and strategies are shared amongst staff, and that productive
feedback is discussed and considered.
PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Assessment and Reporting
The school is currently preparing and planning towards
introducing a new education management system named
Compass and is hoping to have the software in operation by
the beginning of 2018. A decision was approved to continue
using Accelerus for reporting purposes in 2017. The team is
currently reviewing a number of report formats in an effort to
design a report that will reflect the feedback of all PLPS
teaching staff. One significant change to assessment and
reporting this year for all Victorian schools is the move from
AusVELS to the Victorian Curriculum. Students will now be
assessed against these standards. There have been some
changes to the 2017 Victorian Curriculum Reporting
Guidelines:
For students to receive an ‘A’ rating they now need to achieve
18 months or more above the expected level instead of 12
months or more, as previously required.
There is no longer a rating of 0.00 as there are now 4 levels of
‘Pre-Foundation’, i.e. Pre-Foundation A, Pre-Foundation B,
Pre-Foundation C & Pre-Foundation D (these will be shown as
‘Towards Foundation’ on the reports).
Students cannot be assessed as N/A (Not Assessed) anymore.
A did not participate or DNP entry is now available to do with
students not being involved in the curriculum areas taught or
not being able to participate. These include;
- NT = Not Taught
- DNPE = Did Not Participate – Exemption from
Curriculum Area
- DNPL = Did Not Participate – Late Enrolment
- DNPP = Did Not Participate – Low Participation
- DNPI = Did Not Participate – Serious Illness
- DNPU = Did Not Participate – Unapproved Extended

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
STUDENT REPORTS – Monday, 26th June
Reports will be sent home next Monday, 26th June with your children. They will be packaged in a sealed, addressed envelope. The school encourages parents to make positive comments about their child’s learning on the ‘Parent Comment’ page for the first half of the year and return it to your child’s class teacher. The page will be photocopied and returned to you. This year the presentation folders will only be sent home with the reports of our Foundation students. If you would like to request a folder to store your reports, please contact the office.
PARENT TEACHER MEETINGS - Wednesday, 28th June
Parent Teacher Meetings will be held on Wednesday, 28th June from 2:30pm – 7:00pm. Bookings for these meetings can be made on the school’s website with your login name (surname) and pin number which was sent home with the youngest member of the family last Thursday. If you have not received or misplaced your login pin number, please contact the office to have it re-issued. Bookings opened last night at 6pm and most classes have been filling fast. There is the flexibility for parents to change times if required. This can be done by simply logging back in and changing your booking if there is a more suitable time that has been made available through a cancellation or if another parent has changed to a more suitable time. If you need assistance with this please contact the office.

JUVENILE DIABETES RESEARCH FOUNDATION
We are Emma B and Keira S from 6B. We are doing ‘Genius
Hour’ in our class, where we explore ideas that are important
to us or things we want to learn more about. With our project
we have decided to look at how fundraising works. We would
like to raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research
Foundation. JDRF is a foundation that helps research
juvenile diabetes, including prevention, management, and
hopefully a cure for children with type 1 diabetes.
We hope that the PLPS school community could help and
support us to raise funds for the JDRF.
How? We will be selling yummy cupcakes and cookies
for $1 each, and raffle tickets (50c each or 3 for $1) for a prize
of a delicious cake. These will be generously supplied by
Coles at Patterson Lakes. Thank you, Coles!
When and where? On Thursday, June 29 in the old
canteen area. Before school from 8:40am - 9am and again at
the start of lunch, depending on stock availability.
We will be announcing the winner of the raffle at the end of the
day.
Look out for posters around the school in the next few days.

REGIONAL CROSS COUNTRY
Congratulations to Agen V (5A) and Isla P (5D) for competing in the Regional Cross Country finals. Both girls represented our school with great enthusiasm.
Agen who finished eighth overall, has advanced to represent our school at the upcoming state meet.
Isla finished in a creditable 44th place. Well done, girls!

Woolworths Earn & Learn is back and it is now easier than
ever to earn valuable resources for your local primary school,
secondary school or Early Learning Centre. Last year more
than 14,500 schools and Early Learning Centres benefited
from the program, boosting supplies in classrooms, libraries,
music rooms, gymnasiums and science labs.
It is simple to participate. From Wednesday 26th July to
Tuesday 29th September 2017, when you shop at
Woolworths you can collect Woolworths Earn & Learn
Stickers from the checkout operator or through an online order
and place them on a Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker Sheet.
There will be one Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker for every
$10 spent (excluding liquor, tobacco, and gift cards). Once
completed, simply place the Sticker Sheet in the Collection
Box, either at your local school or at your local Woolworths.
The box for our school is in the office area.
You can then redeem your Woolworths Earn & Learn Stickers
for valuable education resources for your local school or Early
Learning Centre.

Conjunctivitis
In the past few weeks, we have had many reported
cases of Conjunctivitis throughout all year levels,
especially in the junior school. Given the highly
contagiousness of the infection, we ask that all students
be kept away from school, while there is still discharge
coming from the eye(s), regardless of whether treatment
has commenced or not.
Conjunctivitis, or pink eye, is an irritation or inflammation
of the conjunctiva, which covers the white part of the
eyeball. It can be caused by allergies or a bacterial or
viral infection. Conjunctivitis can be extremely
contagious and is spread by contact with eye secretions
from someone who is infected.
Symptoms include redness, itching and tearing of the
eyes. It can also lead to discharge or crusting around
the eyes.
You could develop conjunctivitis if you
come into contact with:
Discharge from the eyes, nose or throat of an infected person through touch, coughing or sneezing.
Contaminated fingers or objects.
By skin to skin contact (handshakes or hug)
By touching a contaminated surface (tables or doorknobs).
Conjunctivitis can be spread when children swim in contaminated water or share contaminated towels.
A person with conjunctivitis will remain infectious as long as there is a discharge
from their eye.

It is important for us to encourage students to give themselves permission to experience the full range of their emotions and not suppress them. It is a natural part of life to at times feel scared, sad or angry; it’s how students handle these emotions that is the key.
Learning how to use their signature and top supporting strengths to practise positive coping strategies and positive self-talk to contest negative emotions are valuable resilience skills, which need to be nurtured. Most of us can think back to times when our emotions hijacked the way we thought, spoke and acted and we regretted that we did not contest them. Because students’ good decision-making centre, the pre-frontal cortex, is not fully wired, emotional hijacking can occur when they feel under pressure from stressors.
To build students’ self-regulation and social-emotional resilience to reduce the likelihood of this happening, they need to be involved in discussing positive, negative and mixed emotions and identifying the body language they show when their emotions begin to intensify.
