Art Awareness Day! Today your child learned about Frida Kahlo, a Mexican, female artist who was known for her self-portraits and realism style. In learning about these sculptures we talked about the following art vocabulary: A portrait you draw of yourself is called a self-portrait Proportion – a principle of art that describes the size, location or amount of one element to another (or to the whole) in a work of art Emphasis – to have a special area in a picture or painting brightly colored to draw your attention We then created out own self portrait and incorporated a clue in the background so the viewer might be able to recognize us. We also integrated literature by finishing the statement “I want to be known for..." which helps students reflect on their self and their identity. Art Awareness Day! Art Awareness Day!

Today your child learned about Frida Kahlo, a Mexican, female artist who was known for her self-portraits and realism style.

In learning about these sculptures we talked about the following art vocabulary:

• A portrait you draw of yourself is called a self-portrait

• Proportion – a principle of art that describes the size, location or amount of one element to another (or to the whole) in a work of art

• Emphasis – to have a special area in a picture or painting brightly colored to draw your attention

We then created out own self portrait and incorporated a clue in the background so the viewer might be able to recognize us. We also integrated literature by finishing the statement “I want to be known for..." which helps students reflect on their self and their identity.
