Between Personal and Institutional Religion. Self, Doctrine, and Practice in Late Antique Eastern Christianity

Hermes Christianus. The Intermingling of Hermetic Piety and Christian Thought

To See into the Life of Things: The Contemplation of Nature in Maximus the Confessor and his Predecessors

approx. x + 400 p., 156 x 234 mm, 2013, CELAMA 15, HB, ISBN 978-2-503-54131-0, € 120

This book addresses change and continuity in late antique Eastern Christian-ity, as perceived through the lens of the categories of institutional religion and personal religion. The

interaction between personal devotion and public identity reveals the creative aspects of a vibrant relig-ious culture that altered the experience of Christians on both a spiritual and an institutional level.

xii + 306 p., 156 x 234 mm, 2012, CURSOR 8, HB, ISBN 978-2-503-52960-8, € 80

Hermetic theosophy, originally an offspring of Egyptian religion, spread throughout the ancient world from the Hellenistic age onwards and was welcomed by

Christianity in Late Antiquity. This new study concerns a form of Christian esotericism that attempted to reconcile Christianity with this model of devotion.

357 p., 150 x 210 mm, 2013, MON 18, PB, ISBN 978-2-503-54893-7, € 80

This work provides a synthetic treatment of Maximus the Confessor’s Ambigua to John, a col-lection of texts uniquely expressive of the specu-

lative contours of his thought. They have not received a synthetic treatment until now. This work argues that Maximus’ central concern in is to articulate the nature of philosophy where “philosophy,” the love of wisdom, is nothing less than the love of the Divine.

La littérature des questions et réponses dans l’Antiquité profane et chrétienne: de l’enseignement à l’exégèse

Removing Masculine Layers to Reveal a Holy Womanhood: The Female Transvestite Monks of Late Antique Eastern Christianity

Poetics of Wonder. Testimonies of the New Christian Miracles in the Late Antique Latin World

viii + 314 p., 160 x 240 mm, 2013, IPM 64, HB, ISBN 978-2-503-54686-5, € 95

Longtemps considérée comme l’héritière du dialogue philosophique, générateur de pensée inno-vatrice, la littérature par questions et réponses est ici envisagée sous l’angle de l’instruction dans un univers christianisé.

approx. 250 p., 156 x 234 mm, 2013, STT 13, PB, ISBN 978-2-503-54981-1, approx. € 60

This book reexamines female transvestite monk hagiographies, revealing that female protagonists are portrayed as possessing

a holy womanhood regardless of having layers of masculinity, namely outward, social, and inward masculinity, applied to their characters.

xii + 530 p., 8 b/w ills., 156 x 234 mm, 2012, SEM 31, HB, ISBN 978-2-503-53148-9, € 130

This book examines the return of Christian mira-cles to the public psyche after centuries of absence. By tracing late antique

perceptions of their transformative experience, the work investigates how imaginative represen-tations of miracles induced similar experiences in contemporary audiences and reflects upon modern manifestations of such phenomena.

Inheritance of Late Antique and Medieval Christianity

Apocrypha International Journal of Apocryphal Literatures

Sacris Erudiri is an international journal of religious sci-ences in its broadest sense. Studies published refer mainly to the history of the Church, the history of lit-urgy and patristics.

The journal is focused on the treasures of material borne through literature and other expressions of the imagina-tion over two millennia. This material was generated, cul-tivated and transmitted by numerous Jewish communities and a range of Christian communities throughout Asia, Africa and Europe.

Revue d’Études Augustiniennes et Patristiques

Judaïsme ancien – Ancient Judaism

This journal presents the progress of scholarship in the areas concerning Early Christianity and the Early Mid-dle Ages: history, literature, philology, Bible exegesis, archaeology, iconography, philosophy and theology. It gives pride of place to the work of Augustine, its sources and its later influence.

The journal is both historical and philological with the intention of being interdisciplinary. It focuses on literature, archaeology and epigraphy, culture, religion and sociology. The journal is to be a milieu in which to characterize the interactions (relationships, specificities, distinctions, accul-

turations) between Rabbinic Judaism, Christian Judaism, and Early Islam.

This edition presents a large collection of (unpublished) fragments of Middle Persian and Parthian Manichaean

hymns, both in the original language and trans-lated into English. Since most of the hymns are abecedarian, they are presented as far as pos-sible in strophic form. An extensive introduc-tion, notes, a complete glossary and facsimiles of joined fragments accompany the edition.

238 p., 12 b/w ills., 210 x 297 mm, 2012, BTT 30, PB, ISBN 978-2-503-54627-8, € 70

The ‘Speech of the Liv-ing Soul’ (gōwišn ī grīw zīndag) is the only Middle Persian verse-cycle exten-sively preserved in the

Turfan Collection in Berlin. It constitutes an important Manichaean text dedicated to the cen-tral Manichaean concept of the Living Soul, the light trapped in the material world which desires to return to its proper place in the paradise of light and which the Manichaeans have a duty to save.

x + 282 p., 127 b/w ills., 73 col. ills., 210 x 297 mm, 2012, SAI 2, HB, ISBN 978-2-503-52197-8, € 125

Better known to western medieval travelers as Zay-ton, Quanzhou in Fujian was China’s main port

and also the terminus of the Maritime Silk Road. The city had a significant Christian population, both Catholic and Church of the East (Nesto-rian). The book will be of great interest not only to scholars of Manichaeism and of the Church of the East but also to scholars of East-West contacts under the Mongols.

the date of Easter in Antiquity and the Early Mid-dle Ages.

xvi + 265 p., 156 x 234 mm, 2012, STT 11, PB, ISBN 978-2-503-54436-6, € 65

The main contribution of this study lies in the fact that for the first time the mystical theologies of the two Cistercian monks are studied comparatively in

a comprehensive way and in the light of what is most likely their major source, the theology of the bishop of Hippo.

xii + 396 p., 156 x 234 mm, 2013, STT 12, PB, ISBN 978-2-503-53436-7, € 75

Gildas is the earliest insular writer who has left us a sub-stantial legacy of theologi-cal writing. This book is a study both of Gildas’s use of the scriptures (his text, his

canon, his exegetical strategies) and of how, from the way he interprets sacred history, he created a distinctive theology of the church and of salvation.

canon, his exegetical strategies) and of how, from the way he interprets sacred history, he created a distinctive theology of the church and of salvation.

In the De Trinitate, Augustine applies himself to “giving an account” of belief in the Trinity as it had been defined at Nicaea: the three divine persons are one essence

and equal to each other, while being distinct, and their undivided action in the world as one being does not call into question their distinct manifes-tations in theophnaies and divine “missions”.

Contra Eunomium, which dates from 378-383, is the principal theological work written by Gregory of Nyssa (circa 335 – after 394), bishop in Cappadocia. How-

ever, this milestone of Trinitarian theology and a major step in the development of theological writ-ing and of Patristic theology in Late Antiquity, far from being a systematic work, is a polemical writing that refutes step by step a lost book of Eunomius.

Goulven Madec never dis-sociated the philosopher from the preacher in his study of Augustine ; he was also interested in the authors whose reading was decisive for Augustine, Cic-

Better known to western medieval travelers as Zay-ton, Quanzhou in Fujian was China’s main port

and also the terminus of the Maritime Silk Road. The city had a significant Christian population, both Catholic and Church of the East (Nesto-rian).

Longtemps considérée comme l’héritière du dialogue philosophique, générateur de pensée inno-vatrice, la littérature par questions et réponses est ici envisagée sous l’angle de l’instruction dans un univers christianisé.

approx. 250 p., 156 x 234 mm, 2013, STT 13, PB, ISBN 978-2-503-54981-1, approx. € 60

This book reexamines female transvestite monk hagiographies, revealing that female protagonists are portrayed as possessing

a holy womanhood regardless of having layers of masculinity, namely outward, social, and inward masculinity, applied to their characters.

xii + 530 p., 8 b/w ills., 156 x 234 mm, 2012, SEM 31, HB, ISBN 978-2-503-53148-9, € 130

This book examines the return of Christian mira-cles to the public psyche after centuries of absence. By tracing late antique

perceptions of their transformative experience, the work investigates how imaginative represen-tations of miracles induced similar experiences in contemporary audiences and reflects upon modern manifestations of such phenomena.
