I once saw ainlay cabinet belonging to Lord Ramsay, who sailed underNelson. The front had four glass hour shaped doors alongthe top. It was about eight feet long, the doors were inlaymarquette in a topographical scene. It folded in the middle,(the middle hinge was not visible from the front) and withyoke handles, fitted on the back when closed, four mencould carry it on board ship. The books, mainly sets hadtheir own compartments and when the doors were closedthe books could not move. Each title replicated its superioredition in the home library. I was allowed to buy a few ofthe books which included a variant issue of the first editionof “Alice”. This was in the neophyte days when oneassumed a variant was sort of a defective book. It waspurchased from me by an well known Canadian illus-

extensive marine surveys of Nova Scotia and Grand MananIsland, N.B., in addition to producing a chart of the SaintJohn harbour. His last Admiralty chart was certified at theHydrographic Office in London on 25 March 1818. Seeking post-war preferment, in 1818 Lockwoodpublished in London, at his own expense, A brief descript-ion of Nova Scotia, with plates of the principal harbors, which contained fulsome dedications to the lieutenantgovernor of the colony, Lord Dalhousie [Ramsay*], andofficers of its government, especially Surveyor GeneralCharles Morris*, who had already employed Lockwood as amap-maker. On 25 Feb. 1819, with the written support ofCommander Charles Bullen, Lockwood petitioned thecolonial secretary, Lord Bathurst, for the position ofsurveyor general of New Brunswick. Seven weeks earlier, however, Lieutenant Governor George Stracey Smyth* hadrecommended George Shore, then acting surveyor general, for the appointment. Receiving no reply, Smyth confirmedhis recommendation by letter to Bathurst dated 25 March. This, too, Bathurst ignored, appointing Lockwood on 23April 1819 – a fact unknown to Smyth until Lockwoodpresented himself in Fredericton that July. While passing through Saint John en route, Lockwoodhad encountered a shipload of Welsh emigrants from theSnow Albion, for whom he issued location tickets on hisarrival in the capital. This action, taken even before he hadintroduced himself to Smyth and his Council, proved to be asignificant initiative in forming settlement policy in NewBrunswick. By August, Lockwood had assisted in foundingthe Cardigan Society, to aid the Welsh settlement of thatname; it was in turn quickly absorbed by the FrederictonEmigrant Society of which he became secretary”. From DCB.
