Our very own West Volusia Wolves will be playing for the POP WARNER DIVISION 11 JUNIOR MIDGET NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP this Friday. Under the direction of
2
Head Coach Cameron Robinson, our local team of talented young men have gone undefeated (9-0) this season in regular play and after winning every game in division playoffs they secured the title of South-eastern Region Champions. With that
win they earned a trip to the Pop Warner Super bowl Playoffs at the ESPN Sports
Complex at Disney.
With wins in the first two playoff games, the Wolves are on the brink of one of the
largest athletic and team accomplishments our community and county has experienced.
They are one game away from and poised to take home the National Championship.
The team is comprised of 22 young men who reside in Deltona, DeBary and Orange City.
Of the 22 young men on this team, seven of the players are Pop Warner National Little
Scholar All-Americans. That means they have an overall academic average of 98% or
higher.
Whatever the outcome of Friday’s game, these young men are winners in our community
and county, both in school and on the field. This is a first for a Volusia Team to go so far
in the Pop Warner playoffs.
Congratulations, as well, to the community members who got behind these young men to
raise over $15,000 in less than a week to send the team to their Superbowl. While the
team met their goal, it is not too late to contribute to the cause to cover expenses not
budgeted. You can go to their web site: www.volusiawolves.com to follow the team and to
make a contribution.

A second pair of brown pelicans blown north by Hurricane Sandy arrived aboard a Delta Jet for
rehabilitation at the County’s Marine Science Center. The pair
landed at Daytona Beach International Airport and were met by
the seabird rehabilitation staff of the Mary Keller Seabird
Rehabilitation Sanctuary at the Marine Science Center (MSC) in
Ponce Inlet.
“Pelicans typically don’t venture north of the Chesapeake
Bay, but the winds from Sandy blew the pair far off course,” said
Michael Brothers, MSC manager.
The birds traveled in a modified dog carrier in a heated
cargo hold aboard the commercial flight. Rhode Island
rehabilitators attached netting inside the cage to prevent the birds
from poking their beaks through the ventilation holes on the side of the crate and placed cardboard
over the metal door.
One brown pelican was rescued via jet-ski off the coast of Prudence Island in Narragansett Bay
on November 18. The exhausted bird was alternating between a green buoy and a rock when the crew
picked it up and took it to the Wildlife Rehabilitators Association of Rhode Island’s clinic in
Saunderstown, Rhode Island.
4
The other pelican was found pecking at a garbage dump on Nantucket, and taken to the Cape
Wildlife Center in Barnstable. The bird was taken to the Wildlife Rehabilitators Association just before
Thanksgiving so the pair could be together. Brown pelicans are flock birds. They are more at ease in a
group.
Howard Coombs and David Hancock of Daytona Beach flew to Rhode Island where they
picked up the first pair of birds and set off on a seven-hour return trip to Florida. The two jokingly
named their flight "The Pelican Express."
“The first two brown pelicans are receiving tender, loving care at the Marine Science Center
and after some much-needed rest are expected to be released,” said Brothers. “Pending any
unforeseen complications, the second pair is expected to follow the same recovery pattern.”
Since its opening in 2004, the sanctuary at the Marine Science Center has treated more than
10,000 sick and injured birds. Upon full recovery, healthy birds are released into their natural habitats.

Center, visit the web site www.marinesciencecenter.com (From County press release)

AT LYONIA PRESERVEAT LYONIA PRESERVEAT LYONIA PRESERVEAT LYONIA PRESERVE! ! ! !
Enjoy a green Christmas this year by cutting your own tree at Lyonia Preserve in
Deltona. Residents can select their favorite sand pines from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 15 and 16. Bring your own saw and park along the
entrance to Deltona Lakes Elementary School, 2022 Adelia Blvd.
While they are not traditional Christmas trees, sand pines are popular among
Floridians. These native trees have been likened to
Charlie Brown Christmas treesCharlie Brown Christmas treesCharlie Brown Christmas treesCharlie Brown Christmas trees
because they are sparse and sometimes lopsided. Two or three can be tied together
to make a fuller tree, and many people decorate them and leave them outside for
wildlife. Most of the trees are 4 - 5 feet tall, but they can grow up to 20 feet.
Lyonia Preserve, adjacent to the Deltona Regional Library at 2150 Eustace Ave., is a
360-acre scrub habitat that has three nature trails. Staff and volunteers routinely
remove overgrown sand pines to create bare sand areas with low-growing vegetation
preferred by the Florida scrub jays and gopher tortoises that live at Lyonia Preserve.

Donations are requested, and proceeds will be used by the Friends of the Library to
purchase Florida habitat books for the Deltona Regional Library.
DeBary Hall plans a Victorian Christmas
Experience a Victorian Christmas at DeBary Hall Historic Site by touring the 19th-century hunting lodge, listening to Christmas music, and making old-fashioned ornaments Saturday, Dec. 8.
The lodge will be decorated for Christmas, and tours will focus on Victorian traditions, the history of the Christmas tree, various Santa Claus stories, and how a German family such as the deBarys would
have celebrated the holidays. The tours will be available from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for regular admission fees, which are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, $2 for children ages 3 to 12, and free for children 2 and younger.
The Picky Chics, a group of Central Florida musicians, will play dulcimers in the living room from 1 to 2 p.m. Adults and children can make holiday ornaments on the lawn from 1 to 3:30 p.m. for a $3 materials fee.
DeBary Hall was built in 1871 by Frederick deBary, a New York champagne importer who wanted a retreat in the wilds of central Florida. Today, the site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is owned by the state and managed by Volusia County’s Parks, Recreation and Culture Division.
