Maritcha: A Nineteenth-Century Girl

Lesson Plan for 3rd grade:

Duration: About a week long

Procedure: After lessons about NYC in the 19th Century and what it was like for African Americans we would begin lessons on the book Maritcha.

-The book would be read as an interactive read aloud discussing with the students what is happening.

-Students would then write on a post it a part of the story that they found interesting, connected to, or wanted to share with the class.

-The students would place the post it on a large chart labeled “A 19th Century Girl” in the shape of a girl.

-Then the students would write on a post it, how they’re life is the same or different from what they wrote on the other post it and post it on the chart that says “A 21st Century Child”.

-Since they have not found a diary written by her, each day the students would then write a journal entry after listening to a part from the book, pretending that they are Maritcha. The students would take what they read and pretend that they lived the life and write a journal entry describing her life and her reactions to it.

-At the end of the book and charting and writing every day the students would fill in a venn diagram using the class’s information that was charted.

-Then each student would create a cover with a title for their journals and we would publish them.
