EASY
Patons are written so that YOU — the knitter can moreeasily follow and understand them.
We’ve given more detailed, step by step instructions— no morephrases like “work to correspond”; and we’ve simplified neckbandsby working on two needles instead of 4.
Sizing too, has been updated in line with the most common size
references used in ready made garments.
These are the size references quoted in this book:

HOOK— Miiward.
3.00 (No 1 0-1 1 ) or size needed to give correct tension.
ACCESSORIES — Miiward Knitters Needle to sew seams;Length of Ribbon.
ABBREVIATIONS — See page 6.
TENSION— 24% tr (and 13% rows) to 10 cm (approx 4 ins)
over tr fabric.
Why you should crochet a tension square.
Loose Tension will cause the garments to stretch, drop andrub.
Tight Tension will make the garments too small, with a hardfabric that will matt during washing.
With Correct Tension, your garments will look like our photo.
Using 3.00 (No 10-11) Hook, make 38 ch loosely.
1st row— Miss 3 ch, 1 tr in each ch to end.
2nd row— (1 dc, 1 ch) in first tr. 1 tr in each tr to end, 1 tr in topof turning ch.
Rep 2nd row 1 8 times. Fasten off. (continuedon nextpage
Book 649—Page 7
Lay your square on a flat surface, place a metric rule across the
centre of the square and mark 10 cm with pins as shown in
photo . Count the number of tr between the pins.
You should have 24 tr.
Less tr means loose tension— try a size smaller hook.
More tr means tight tension— try a size larger hook.
When you have achieved the correct tension, use the samehook to crochet your garments (you may unravel your tension
square and use the yarn in your garments).

Plain smooth fabric only.—This Is the method by which two pieces of knitting are joined together to avoid a seam.
Divide the stitches equally on two needles, with the yarn at one end and with the right side of the work facing. Break off the

HOOK— Milward.
3.00 (No 1 0-1 1 ) or size needed to give correct tension.
ACCESSORIES — Milward Knitters Needle to sew seams;
Length of Ribbon.
ABBREVIATIONS — See page 6. “Cluster" = (yoh, draw up aloop in next st to a height of 1 cm ...% inch) twice in same st, yoh
and draw through all 5 loops on hook, 1 ch to fasten; “Group"

"Cluster". 3 ch, "Cluster").
TENSION — 2AVi tr (and 13% rows) to 10 cm (approx 4 ins)
over tr fabric.
Why you should crochet a tension square.
Loose Tension will cause the garment to stretch, drop and rub.
Tight Tension will make the garment too small, with a hard
fabric that will matt during washing.
With Correct Tension, your garment will look like our photo.
Using 3.00 (No 10-11) Hook, make 30 ch loosely.
1st row— Miss 3 ch, 1 tr in each ch to end.
2nd row— (1 dc. 1 ch) in first tr, 1 tr in each tr to end. 1 tr in top
of turning ch.
Rep 2nd row 1 0 times. Fasten off.
Lay your square on a flat surface, place a metric rule across the
centre of the square and mark 10 cm with pins as shown in
photo on page 0. Count the number of tr between the pins.
You should have 24% tr.
Less tr means loose tension— try a size smaller hook.
More tr means tight tension— try a size larger hook.
When you have achieved the correct tension, use the samehook to crochet your garment (you may unravel your tension
square and use the yarn in your garment).

TENSION — 31 8t8 to 10 cm (approx 4 in8) In width over

Why you 8hould knit a tension square.
Loose Tension will cause the garments to stretch, drop and
rub.
Tight Tension will make the garments too small, with a hard
fabric that will matt during washing.
With Correct Tension, your garments will look like our photo.
Using 3.25 (No 1 0) Needles, cast on 46 sts.
Work 64 rows stocking st.
Cast off loosely.
Lay your square on a flat surface, place a metric rule across the
centre of the square and mark 10 cm with pins as shown in
photo on page 12. Count the number of sts between the pins.
You should have 31 sts.
Less sts means loose tension— try needles a size smaller.
More sts means tight tension— try needles a size larger.
When you have achieved the correct tension, use the sameneedles to knit your garments (you may unravel your tension
square and use the yarn in your garments). Remember, if you
need to change the needle size to achieve the correct tension,
you must also change the size of needles used in bands, etc.

TENSION 29 sts to 10 cm (approx 4 ins) in width overstocking st.
Why you should knit a tension square.
Loose Tension will cause the garments to stretch, drop and
rub.
Tight Tension will make the garments too small, with a hard
fabric that will matt during washing.
With Correct Tension, your garments will look like our photo.
Using 3.25 (No 1 0) Needles, cast on 43 sts.
Work 58 rows stocking st.
Cast off loosely.
Lay your square on a flat surface, place a metric rule across the
centre of the square arKj mark 10 cm with pins as shown in
photo on page 16. Count the number of sts between the pins.
You should have 29 sts.
Less sts means loose tension— try needles a size smaller.
More sts means tight tension— try needles a size larger.
When you have achieved the correct tension, use the sameneedles to knit your garments (you may unravel your tension
square and use the yarn in your garments).

Helpful Hints.Neatening of cast-off buttonholes. When working the row after buttonhole has been completed, with right-
hand needle pick up purlways the loose thread, or threads, at base of buttonhole, slip it on to left-hand needle
and work it together with the first stitch on left-hand needle.
Alternatively, when working the cast-on row of buttonhole, before slipping the last cast-on stitch on to the left-
hand needle, pass the yarn from back to front between the needles, then slip the stitch on to the left-hand
needle and complete row.

The right way to avoid the wrong size
Correct tension is vital! Inaccurate tension results in a garment either too big or too small. Even a variation of half a stitch
makes a difference and could result in your garment pilling or rubbing.

ABBREVIATIONS — See page 6.
TENSION — 31 sts to 10 cm (approx 4 ins) in width overstocking st.
Why you should knit a tension square.
Loose Tension will cause the garments to stretch, drop and
rub.
Tight Tension will make the garments too small, with a hard
fabric that will matt during washing.
With Correct Tension, your garments will look like our photo.
Using 3.25 (No 10) Needles, cast on 46 sts.
Work 64 rows stocking st.
Cast off loosely.
Lay your square on a flat surface, place a metric rule across the
centre of the square and mark 10 cm with pins as shown in
photo on page 12. Count the number of sts between the pins.
You should have 31 sts.
Page 26—Book 649
Less sts means loose tension— try needles a size smaller.
More sts means tight tension— try needles a size larger.
When you have achieved the correct tension, use the sameneedles to knit your garments (you may unravel your tension
square and use the yarn in your garments).

ABBREVIATIONS — See page 6.
TENSION — 29 sts to 10 cm (approx 4 ins) in width overstocking st.
Lay your square on a flat surface, place a metric rule across the
centre of the square and mark 10 cm with pins as shown in
photo on page 16.
