Healthy for Life Secrets behind the science of Chiropractic…
and methods for successful living! - A newsletter by Dr. Kaili Richey
Ask the Doctor
“What happens when you
visit a chiropractor’s
office? And why?”
The answer is: Patients wonder why we do certain things during your office visit. Let’s go over some of the reasons here…
What’s your history?
Doctors typically gather some family and personal history about the patient. We call this the health history. We like to know what
health issues you’ve had in the past… because it can provide telling information about your current condition. For instance, knowing that a patient engages in physical labor of a particular kind can help me pinpoint the area in the spine we should direct some attention towards. Or knowing that another patient has had prior surgery for spinal pain is
obviously important and it’ll enable me to determine the correct diagnosis. Next we do…
The Physical Examination Now we begin the examination. No needles or drawing blood in a chiropractic office:) A chiropractic examination can often include general tests such as blood pressure, pulse,
respiration, and reflexes, as well as specific neurological tests such as Range of motion, the muscle tone & strength of the impacted area, and the like. There may also be further recommended diagnostic tests such as x-ray, MRI, etc., depending on the doctor’s opinion on the severity of your condition.
What’s the Purpose of the Report of
Findings? The doctor then organizes his diagnosis into something known as the Report of Findings. The purpose of this is to give patients an overview of the state of their condition and then is followed by a treatment recommendation. Reminder: If you’ve been
feeling pain for 48 hours or longer, you’re advised to contact us immediately.

Here is some “must have” info you need for the Holiday’s…
Shocking Flu Facts! It’s almost that time of the year again - Flu season. As we stuff our faces and
enjoy Halloween and upcoming other holiday parties, an estimated 15 million
people will get the flu next month. Below are some intriguing Flu Facts that I bet
you didn’t know until you read them here…
The annual flu season actually begins in October and continues until May. Every year,
between 5 percent and 20 percent of the U.S. population gets the flu. That means as
many as 60 million get sick from the flu every year. Seasonal flu results in more than
200,000 hospitalizations and about 36,000 deaths annually.
The media and some medical organizations recommend the flu vaccine for children
under two years old and all adults over 50. However some health experts are screaming,
“Don't fall for it!” There are lingering questions about the effectiveness of the flu
vaccination such as…
Those most at risk of flu complications probably share a higher risk of adverse
reactions to the flu vaccine as well.
Flu vaccine is relatively ineffective in those patients most at risk of flu
complications.
The vaccine has caused Guillan Barre Syndrome in recipients during several
different flu seasons.
How can I fight the flu with nutritional supplements? The following supplements
have the most research to back up their effectiveness in fighting the flu: Vitamin C,
Zinc, and Selenium. The white blood cells are your immune system's first line of
defense against viruses, bacteria and other harmful organisms. These three supplements
can aid in white cell production and activation. Finally, I read that one expert believes
that sugar suppresses the function of these cells by 50% for several hours. Carefully
limiting your sugar intake during the holidays could be very beneficial. If you have any
questions, just ask! And don’t forget the power of chiropractic so boost your immune
system during flu season. Happy Thanksgiving!
Fast Facts for Life! When was the last time you looked under
the kitchen sink; I mean really looked? A
new information service, unveiled by the
National Institutes of Health on August 1st,
spells out the details on what’s in or
what’s under your sink or in the bathroom.

Successful Living
Breakthroughs!
Routines are the secret to helping kids slow
down, settle down and prepare for bedtime. To
make it easier for kids to settle into a routine,
turn off the TV, computer or CD player. Make
it a point to spend a little quality, quiet time
with the kids before bed.
Avoid rambunctious activities. Reading aloud
is a great way to “settle in” for the night.

Breakthroughs/Fast Facts for Life
Tips to healthy living…
I have some blunt questions about
chiropractic: How educated are
chiropractors? Is chiropractic a New
Age Fad? . . . and more!
There are certain questions that patients might be
afraid or too embarrassed to ask their chiropractic
doctor. Such as how educated are chiropractors? Do
we believe in other types of health care? And, is
chiropractic a new-age fad? This month I decided to
tackle these “hidden questions” head on.
A Chiropractors Education Some find it surprising that the length of chiropractic
schooling is frequently longer than that required of
most medical students. To be accepted to a
chiropractic college, at least two years in
undergraduate college must be obtained with a
concentration in the sciences. Chiropractic college
requires four years of study, an internship, lab work,
typically followed by an extended period of study
working in a practice with an established doctor of
chiropractic. In a review of the curriculum’s of eleven
chiropractic colleges and twenty-two medical schools
in the United States, it was found that chiropractors
experience 2,887 hrs. of classroom of learning
compared to 2,706 for medical students. I believe this
to be one of the reasons for the success rate of
chiropractic.
Is Chiropractic a New Age Fad? Spinal manipulation is an ancient art. The earliest
written account of it has been found in a Chinese
document, the Kon Fou, dated around 2700BC. The
early fathers of medicine, the Greek physicians
Hippocrates and Galen, practiced spinal manipulation
and preached the importance of the spine in relation to
health. Hippocrates is credited with inventing a
mechanical device for stretching the spine by traction;
he also recommended sitting on patients if necessary!
Chiropractic began in 1895 and is attributed to D.D.
Palmer.
Do You Believe in Other Forms of Health
Care?
Yes, we do. The era we live in today offers exciting
advances in medicine. Chiropractors regularly work
closely with other health practitioners to offer a
comprehensive approach to wellness. What
differentiates chiropractic from medicine is that
chiropractors attempts to correct medical conditions
with conservative treatments first which cause no side
effects. Only after all attempts have been made do we
look at invasive surgery. Plus chiropractic has been
shown to cost 90% less than surgery but without the
side effects. For more info, help,
questions, etc., about this topic

Quick facts about staying healthy…
Making the Most of Your Morning and Midday Break
An article in Cooking Light recently got me to thinking about a bad
habit many us, including me, have developed in recent years. I believe
it has something to do with the hurry sickness that everyone in
America seems to have today and our habit of skipping meals or eating
wrong when time is tight. You know what I am talking about—the
hurry we’re all in everyday that sometimes precludes eating properly.
For many the first thing to suffer is eating right.
According to a survey by the National Restaurant Association,
“40 percent of full-time employees usually don’t take a full lunch
break and 27.3 percent spend their time doing something other
than eating.”
If you’re not taking time to eat regularly or eat right one or two
meals a day then you could be missing out on many of the vitamins
and minerals essential to a healthy body. Cooking Light offers these
suggestions designed to encourage better eating and taking the time to
eat right:
1. Eat with others. Make taking time to eat properly fun.
2. Eat what you like. Choose food you like, but that’s good for you,
and truly enjoy, not just something to fill you up till later.
3. Make good choices. A BLT v. PB&J may seem like a no-brainer,
but the BLT is chock-full of saturated fat—not good.
With the Holiday’s upon us, make taking time to eat and eat right a
priority. Look at breakfast and lunch as a time to practice a little
downtime, savor a few moments to yourself or just relax. You may
enjoy it so much you’ll never miss a meal again!
For more healthy living advice pertaining to this article (or anything for
that matter) please give me a call and let’s talk. I’m here to serve you.
Fascinating Facts!
Despite the plethora of diet plans and fads today, still the most
sure-fire way to lose weight is by controlling your daily calorie
consumption. Calories counter devices, charts and Internet-based
Web sites are all terrific aids, but the best method is still the mighty
pencil. Jotting down each food item, the portion size and when
eaten can work as well as more sophisticated approaches. All it
takes is commitment, time and discipline. And perhaps a good
notebook to record your food choices. Make sure you read or save
food labels; you’ll need them to total up each day!

Health Success Story
of the Month! 39 year old female with chronic
fatigue, digestive problems, and
trouble sleeping came in for a
nutritional consult with Dr. Pichotta.
After doing some lab work found her
adrenals to be compromised. She is
in month 6 of following specific
protocols and is feeling better than
she has in years with clearer skin,
sleeping greatly improved and no
more digestive pains.
Patient of the Month I met Dr. Richey when she was
promoting her practice at the "Willy Street
Fair" several years ago and had a follow up
evaluation at the Clinic.
I was looking for a way to prolong my
wellness between Chiropractic
appointments. I used to just go for
Chiropractic care when my body was in
crisis (back pain, muscle cramps, etc.).
I have been seeing Dr. Richey monthly for
the past couple of years and occasionally I
make an extra visit if I feel like I am starting
to have back problems.
Overall I feel better than I ever have on a
daily basis with the regular visits. It sure
beats going every day or several times a
week for a month or longer.
The book, additional information available
and classes have been very practical and
helpful.
Thanks Dr. Richey and Dr. Pichotta for
helping me feel so great everyday!

Perils of the Modern
Diet… Strike Again!
Until they began to eat modern
Western food, the Pima Indians of
the Arizona desert were a healthy
tribe. Today, they suffer from the highest incidence of diabetes in the world. For thousands of years the Pima Indians consumed a diet of nutrient-rich foods. Today, fifty percent of Pima Indians over the age of 32, suffer from type II adult-onset diabetes. From the article titled Primal Prescription by John Willoughby he states, “As the Pima abandoned their ancestral diets in favor of a modern diet high in fat, sugar, and processed foods, the incidence of diabetes skyrocketed and rampant obesity appeared.” Over the centuries, the Pima Indians ate a low-fat low-sugar diet, which their bodies metabolized efficiently. With proper nutrition, they had good health.
