MDA drivers and teams could not have hoped for a better result dur- ing a recent resuscitation process. On a bright February night, a call was received at the 101 Magen David Adom dispatch center re- porting a man who had lost con- sciousness. Twenty-three-year-old Moshe Stern, a 3 year volunteer at the Kiryat Ono station, received his MDA Medi- cycle on the very same day he was called to resuscitate the 40-year- old patient. He recalls: "I was on my way from Tel Aviv to my home when I received a call via the App about a case of shortness of breath. MDA 101 dispatch center in- formed me of a man who collapsed at home, on the very same street I was riding on which meant I was able to reach the house within a minute. I went into the house and saw a gentleman in his 40s lying on the floor, his nervous wife said he just lost concsiousness; he had a pulse and was not breathing. I proceeded to administer CPR and immediately called for an am- bulance.” The Intensive Care Ambulance arrived within minutes manned by 22 year old Shay Alpha also a 3 year first responder and instructor who recalled: "We continued with resuscitation and a few minutes later we saw that the man regained consciousness and began breath- ing by himself. The MICU arrived and continued with advanced medical treatment at the scene and during transport to the hospital. Menny Shalom, another 43-year- old paramedic at the scene who has worked for MDA for 17 years, says: "In an immediate ECG check we observed a severe myocardial infarction, and during the prepara- tions for monitoring, ventilation and further treatment, the patient started to breathe by himself. While preparing to evacuate him to the hospital, we contacted the emergency room and the intensive care unit immediately, and when we reached the emergency room the cardiologist was already wait- ing for us pleasantly surprised see- ing that the patient, who had since returned to full consciousness, was conversing with the medical staff. Shay Alpha continues: “After the call, I drove to the hospital to see how he was doing and arrived just as he was on his way to the catheterization lab. It was truly amazing to see him fully awake and communicative. The next day his wife called and said that he woke up after the surgery, was feel- ing great and thanked us for the quick response and subsequent life-saving treatment. Knowing that you have successfully resuscitated a patient and was able to see him literally come back to life is such a serene feeling. It does not happen every day that you succeed in re- viving a 40-year-old patient. These cases give me great satisfaction and are the reason I keep doing what I am doing. Volunteering with MDA and saving lives is very re- warding to me and I am happy to have my family’s support regardless of the weather or the time of day or night the call comes in. Moshe Stern adds: "The feeling at that moment was unforgettable; especially since it was the very first day I got my Medi-cycle combined with the odd chance that I was in the right place at the right time. Such a great rewarding feeling! Volunteering highlighted the inner need in me to help others in a most profound way." Menny Shalom praised the teams: "I am happy that the patient was able to receive such an immediate response and am very proud of the first responders who save lives every day!" There are not many jobs that pro- vide this tremendous satisfaction in saving lives. This gives us the strength to continue with a lot of motivation to love what we do and provide the advanced treatment for emergency medicine." YOUR SUPPORT MADE THIS POSSIBLE. International Unit?If you haven’t heard about this program,it began in 2013 by inviting doctors tocome and train with Magen David Adomin Israel. Today, five years later, morethan 200 physicians worldwide havebeen trained.

Every year, Canadian Magen David Adomsends a group of doctors in all specialties, from coast to coast, to Israel to train inMass Casualty Incidents (MCI). Thecourse is one week long.

The Unit’s objectives?1. Train and expose doctors to MDA’s ex-

pertise, experience and equipment, mostly in the Mass Casualty Incident(MCI) field with the hope that if, oneday something major would happen inIsrael, the doctors would feel comfort-able travelling to Israel to assist MDA.

2. Prepare the doctors to help in thecase of a disaster in their communitiesso that they could manage MCIs priorto the arrival of the local EMS andother emergency forces if somethingwere to happen in Canada.

3. Help us, Canadian Magen David Adomfor Israel (CMDAI) here in Canada.Help with fundraising initiatives andhelp to increase awareness for MagenDavid Adom’s lifesaving work.

“MCI Preparedness & Community Leadership Course”In January, the Advanced Mission tookplace. All 32 doctors who took part in theprogram had already taken the basiccourse and returned to receive higherlevel training. They sharpened their skillsin MCI, Triage, Medical Protocols, Man-agement and Pre-Hospital Trauma LifeSupport (PHTLS). They even worked onMDA’s Mobile Intensive Care Units(MICUs) around the country.

The highlight of the trip was a Mass Ca-sualty Incident surprise drill in Ashdod. The doctors were told that they were

going to a synagogue to meet Ashdod’shead rabbi. Unknown to them, 25 fakecasualties were waiting to be found in thebasement beneath the synagogue. The“rabbi” – an MDA volunteer – came intothe room and, one minute after he beganhis speech, alarms began sounding in thesynagogue. “A missile has hit the syna-gogue…DRILL, DRILL, DRILL, everyonedown to the basement.”

As smoke filled the room, doctors tookcommand of the scene, calling for back-up, and began treating the casualties untilMDA teams arrived. Real EmergencyMedi-Cycle and Ambulances were involved in the drill. The drill was exe-cuted beautifully, demonstrating the doc-tors’ knowledge, training, devotion andhard work.
