What is SOWEGA‐AHEC ?*The Southwest Georgia Area Health Education Center (SOWEGA‐AHEC) is a community‐driven, nonprofit organization whose goalis to increase access to healthcare by improving the number and distribution of healthcare providers in 38 counties in Southwest Georgia.

*Our long‐range goals are to cultivate a healthcare workforce that closely matches the state’s population in diversity, to assure that each community has enough practitioners in the right disciplines, particularly primary care, to improve access to healthcare.

*AHECs are located across the United States.

*Georgia has 6 AHECs: 1. Blue Ridge2. Foothills3. Magnolia Coastlands4. Southwest Georgia5. SPCC Atlanta 6. Three Rivers

*Georgia Statewide AHEC Network office is located in Augusta Georgia.

What is Pathway to Med School (PTMS)?

The SOWEGA‐AHEC PTMS Program is a 160 hour structured residential experience featuring 50% clinical shadowing and 40% community research. The remaining 10% of the program includes scheduled activities designed to enhance your knowledge of the med school process.

Does it work?

2004‐2020 Historical Facts 

*Number of students who have completed the Pathway program: 137

*Number of participants who have completed the med school application process: 115

*Number of Pathway graduates who have been accepted to med school: 100

92% of Pathway graduates who applied to medical school and received a reply from  their applications have gained admittance into medical school, sooooo YES! IT WORKS!

Eligibility Applicants to the SOWEGA‐AHEC Pathway to Med School Program must: 

*Be at least a rising college sophomore working on a pre‐med pathway in  a Georgia college or university 

*Have a minimum 3.0 overall GPA and 3.0 Math/Science GPA

*Be a legal Georgia resident AND U.S. citizen 

*Apply to only 1 of the PTMS Programs. Applying to both will exclude you from both!

*Write a 500‐word essay titled, “Why I am Interested in Serving Rural   Populations as a Primary Care Physician”

*Have reliable transportation during the program

*Have NO OTHER OBLIGATIONS during the 4‐week program, June 7 to July 2

*Online Application and OFFICIAL transcript must be received no later than March 2, 2021
