The Spirit of Honywood

I am delighted to report that this week we are launching a new Parent Teacher Association, which we are naming ‘Spirit of Honywood’. Over many years our PTA has been a great support to the school, raising funds to directly support learning and offering their help in a range of ways, for example in supporting the many school productions that we put on each year. However, like all PTAs, membership changes on a regular basis as families see their youngsters progress through the school, so one of the key aims of our re-launched association is to broaden membership to include past learners and members of the community who may be parents of former learners at the school, or indeed, people who care about education in our community even though their direct experience of education at Honywood is limited.

Inserted in Honywood Gazette this week is an advert setting out the goals of the new organisation and requesting that those interested in supporting it get in touch. You can do so by emailing Scott Caygill at [email protected]. He will put you in touch with the team of staff who are going to support the new association, who will share with you further details of our plans for the immediate and longer term future.

Spirit of Honywood’s first event will be a Spring Fair to be held at the school on Saturday 1st April. More details of the stalls that will be available at the fair will be shared after half-term; can I encourage as many of you as possible to come to the event so that you can not only enjoy the day, but also see how you might be able to support our community through becoming a member of Spirit of Honywood. Can I also ask that anyone who is interested in booking a pitch on 1st April contact Laura Brown at Honywood [email protected] and she will look to create a space for you.

Communication

One thing about our school of which I am immensely proud is the quality of communication that exists between our youngsters and between our youngsters and our staff. Throughout my time as Headteacher here this has always been very strong in face-to-face communication. In recent times we have seen a huge growth in electronic communication and this has, in almost every case, helped to strengthen relationships between us.

When we communicate face-to-face, we have a lot of different resources at our disposal which can make that communication more effective. The use of intonation in our speech, the way we are able to use pauses to show that we are listening in two-way communication and the way in which we use our body language to convey meaning are all important elements in face-to-face communication. Of course, when we communicate using email, or via a messaging service or via Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, we don’t have all these resources to ensure that the meaning in our communication is as clear as it can be.

HeadlinesBy Simon Mason

Page 3: Pathway Event Page 5 - Honywood School · 2/10/2017  · Pathway Event Page 5 C7 Showcasing Page 6 Issue 578 - 10th February 2017 | Tel : 01376 561231 | Fax: 01376 563067

When communicating electronically it is, therefore, really important to think carefully about the words you use and think carefully about the grammar and punctuation you employ to ensure that the meaning of your message is as clear as is possible. Of course, if you rush out an email or message without thinking through the message carefully, you can end up creating problems in your relationships with others that you would not have caused had you paused for more thought and carefully read through what you wanted to send.

All of us now lead very busy lives and it can be very tempting to send messages that are not fully thought through and which, as a result, cause offence or distress to others. Learners must be clear that if they should make such a mistake in their communication, they will be held to account, even where the message sent was not intended to cause distress to others. Please make every effort to check your communication carefully and think about how it will feel to receive it when you are not expecting it and when you are also very busy. Putting yourself more clearly into the mind of the recipient of your communication nearly always makes for a more effective message.

Remember, if you wouldn’t want to receive it, you probably shouldn’t send it! Relationships can take years to build up and minutes to ruin through a moment of thoughtless communication. Keep working hard to ensure that your electronic communication is the equal of the excellent standard you consistently manage face-to face.

"On Wednesday 1st February we were joined by 17 ex-learners, who kindly gave their time to come in and talk to learners from Cohorts 8, 9, 10 and 11 about their experiences after leaving Honywood.

This was a unique opportunity for learners to ask questions they had about further education, career opportunities and life after Honywood in an informal setting. In total 162 of our current learners attended the event, and were able to ask questions and learn from our ex-learners’ experiences."

Cohort 7 Showcasing Part of our Learning JourneyCohort 7 Showcasing - Part of our Learning Journey

Cohort 7 have now had three showcasing opportunities, which has given the Cohort and their teachers the opportunity to REFLECT on the LEARNING JOURNEYS at Honywood and in doing so bringing into focus the PROCESS of their learning rather than just considering a finished piece. Showcasing is supported by the framework questions;

Showcases are an authentic opportunity to demonstrate newly acquired skills and accomplishments and to start a dialogue between the learner and the teacher that is very specific to the learner’s needs. The examples below are just a few of the really great examples that C7 have produced and have been uploaded to their My Learning Journey pages on il@h and give good examples of the way that communication can take place between the learner and the teacher. Getting feedback is very important but also it is equally important to be able to implement the feedback and demonstrate how you have achieved this.

Ms A MARTIN Well done for spending so much time learning 'sein' through movement and singing. How has this helped you remember it? Gabrielle ASSUMAN It helped me remember because I love singing and when I make a song it sticks to my head.

Miss K EGAN Dear Emily, I have thoroughly enjoyed reading your showcase; what a beautiful way to begin it with a reflection back to what you thought Scientists looked like when you started at Honywood. I feel you have made a very positive start to Science at Honywood; you now show a confidence when completing practicals within the lab and a clear awareness of how to ensure that you remain safe when doing so. I would like you to try and reflect back to this topic; you created a fantastic safety video, which the class enjoyed watching. How do you think working in a group benefited you when completing this task? I was disappointed to hear that Science was not fun in primary; how do you think the enthusiasm you have shown for Science, since you started at Honywood, has helped you to be successful? Keep up the fantastic work Miss Egan

Emily PYATT Dear ma'am Thank you for all the lovely comments. How working in a group has benefitted me is that when helped working with other people to come up with fantastic ideas. The way enthusiasm has helped me to be successful is that it has encouraged me to work harder because when I enjoy it I want to learn, therefore input in lots of hard work and listen. Thank you again ma'am for all the nice comments. Emily Pyatt 7KAr

Mrs L MORROW Emily, your showcase is very detailed. You have confidently written about each of the activities you completed. You have shown good map skills in the Zulu project as you were able to identify maps at different scales and successfully label a map of Africa. You have been able to create interesting questions about the topics to helped to guide your research. It was a good idea to include pictures of the stages of plotting your maps onto grids as this shows how you made progress. I believe that you have grown in confidence as you are beginning to think more like a geographer and understand what is expected in each project. You have stated that you want to practice your map skills- How could you include/practice this in your next project?

Emily DE SILVA Thank you. I'm glad you liked my showcase. To practice my map skills, I could redraft the one that went a bit wrong or I could find a map (on iPad) and try and put the grid references on it.

Maisie HARRIS Today, in maths, we looked at nets of a 3D shape. I did a hexagonal prism. I learnt that it is a lot easier and less frustrating than I thought it would be. I enjoyed this lesson. I also never knew that a hexagonal prism existed.

Mrs T GROVES Maisie, thank you for a lovely showcase. I am pleased that you have identified that you need to challenge your learning rather than focus on tasks that you are confident with. You mention that you are secure where you are at the moment - where is this? Why do you feel secure? What do you want to develop? I would like for you to mention your MLA's in your next showcase. Well done Maisie.

Reflecting on why and how you were successful is incredibly useful. It will allow you recognise the skills you used and help you use them again

in the future. What attributes did you use? Which could you improve on?

Miss A McPHAIL Good showcase, Alex. Well done for uploading it. Could you please ensure that you are being specific when reflecting. You say that you have 'learnt a lot more', but what specifically have you learned or developed? Also, when you say 'improve my creativity', what does this mean? Please could you either edit your iBook OR you can reply to this comment with your further thoughts.

Alex JENNINGS What I mean for "improve my creativity" is that I should be more imaginative with my writing
