Dragon Boat Race 2009

Welcome to the Apple Pie Jamboree! The Jamboree is always highly anticipated here in Pateros because of its amazing ability to bring friends, families, and the entire community together to celebrate summer on the river, and we are glad to have you all here!

As the years have passed, the Jamboree has seen many changes – since the first Jamboree was held, the once free flowing Columbia River has been morphed into our beautiful Lake Pateros, families have grown and changed, and even the Jamboree itself has taken on many different forms. Yet one thing has always stayed the same – the fun that people from all

around have when they come to our small town to celebrate things that we hold dear – each other!

The Jamboree will host its second competitive Dragon Boat race. Please see our History article of Dragon Boat Racing. We want to continue to absorb this ancient tradition into our own and enjoy the fun and competition it brings our community for many years to come.

The Apple Pie Jamboree is rich with its own history and traditions, some very old, and some very new, but we are happy to have you here to experience it with us. Please enjoy!

Dragon Boat Race 20094

The origin of dragon boat racing can be traced to events that happened in southern China over 2,000 years ago. Originally, boats adorned with dragon heads were part of a fertility rite as a way to encourage plentiful rains and a good harvest.

Dragon boat racing, within the context of a festival, became much more important in Chinese culture with the tragic events surrounding Qu Yuan (pronounced Chu Yuan) around 277 B.C. Qu was a senior minister, diplomat, and poet in the Ch'u feudal kingdom. As a man of integrity and wisdom, he gave truthful advice to the kind, advice that angered his political rivals. These rivals persuaded the king to banish Qu Yuan. Despondent over his exile and the subsequent decline of the government, Qu put stones in his pocket and drowned himself in the Mi Lo River. When local fishermen raced out to rescue him, they beat their drums and splashed with their paddles to scare the fish and

water dragons away from Qu Yuan's body. They also threw rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves in the water, hoping that the fish would eat the dumplings and leave the body alone.

To commemorate their beloved Qu Yuan, the people of southern China staged dragon boat races to remember the day they raced into the river in an attempt to save him. The dragon boat races, and the serving of rice dumplings or rice cakes, became an annual event on the fifth day of the fifth month, believed to be the day Qu Yuan drowned in the Mi Lo River.

What's most exciting is the growth of the sort at the grass roots level. Although most international crews are either all male or female, national and regional events attract primarily mixed teams from corporations, public service groups and clubs sponsored by small businesses and high schools.

Dragon Boat Race 20096

Back in the day—the day in this case being 1947—the city fathers and mothers of Pateros decided the town needed a little something in the summer, something fun for the residents and something to raise some money for a good cause.

And out of that desire for a little summer fun and a little good work the Apple Pie Jamboree was born.

Mrs. Countryman got the ball rolling; she got help from the members of the Pateros Grange. Like every other town celebration they elected a queen; participants bought raffle tickets in the name of their preferred candidate. (The prize, coveted in every Pateros household with electricity, was a freezer.) Ethel Loop was the winner.

The surprise guest of honor was the governor, Mon Wallgren (governors ventured out and about the state in those days). Everyone in town was in the parade, along with the Wenatchee Drum and Bugle Corps. There was a lot to do, ranging from the bingo game and

the carnival game booths to the softball game.

And, as Phil Brownlee wrote in his story on the Jamboree’s 40th anniversary in June 1987:

“Everyone had a great time catching flying chickens which had been tossed off the buildings along the street.”

Okay.The proceeds from the original

Jamboree went to buy a resuscitator for the hospital (which in ‘47 was still a gleam in the eye of its proponents).

That was the first Jamboree; there was talk of a return in 1948, but what Pateros actually got was a bad cold winter, a lot of snow, severe spring rainstorms and the great flood of ‘48. A lot of things were put on hold, and the town celebration was one of them. The Jamboree was revived in 1950, with the Pateros Active Club and the Pateros Volunteer Fire Department taking over.

Mary Lou Carey was the second Jamboree queen; the raffle that year was

for an 800-pound steer. (Don’t even think about it. . .) There was a kids parade and the grand parade, boxing matches (called a smoker in those days) with the main event (Ernie Washburn was one of the combatants, a name longtime residents of the Quad City area will recognize). There was a stage show featuring local talent. It was so much fun there was an Apple Pie Jamboree every year through 1957.

Then the celebration was put on hold again; it was about that time that people started talking about the possibility of building a dam just downstream from Pateros, which would require, among other things, moving the town. With everyone’s attention focused on the construction of Wells Dam and the subsequent demolition and rebuilding of downtown, subjects like a yearly town celebration got pushed aside.

But when all the rebuilding was done there was a beautiful park right along the river, which was a great spot for a town celebration. The Apple Pie Jamboree returned in 1969, and the town has been celebrating with parades, games, contests, talent shows, street dances, auctions, boat races (the dragon boats are a lot quieter than the hydroplanes who used to race on Apple Pie weekend) and the sale of the celebration’s signature apple pies.

Through it all the jamboree has been kept afloat by a number of dedicated volunteers. The volunteers organize the parade and make the sloppy joes and apple pies and oversee the games, and—although they’re a little harried on jamboree weekend—they deserve a word of thanks and a pat on the back for their hard work.

THE HOmESTEAD

The Homestead Dragon Boat team is made up of a group of passionate, energetic, and competitive people. Our group comes from

near and far to race and we are excited about defending our title from last year! With grace and strength we can’t wait to

get in the boat!

In the fall of 2004, with friends and family from Bellingham to Olympia and cities in between and as far as

eastern Washington, the Nagasteam was born.

The team owes its name and inspi-ration to the history and legends

of Cambodia; legend says that the Brahman Prince Kambu and the Naga Princess Soma became the

founders of the Khmer people. So the Naga represents all that is an-

cient and primal, original, virtuous and the powers that once belonged

to the Khmer people. For us it’s all about being out on the water to challenge ourselves,

because after all, Nagas belong on the water. Also as a dragon boat club we continue and preserve

the traditions, not just the Khmer celebration of Bon Om Tuk (Festi-val of Boat Races), but also those of other countries. We participate

in dragon boat races in Tacoma and venture out to Spokane, Olympia

and Kent, Washington and Portland and Salem, Oregon.

NAGAS

This team is made up of H2A workers, who all come from the state of Tamaulipas,

Mexico. When they are not working on H2A contracts in the United States, most

pick oranges and other citrus fruit at home. Naranjeros is Spanish for “orange pickers.”

Living by the motto: “Will pillage for pie”, the Scurvy Dawgs are a well-

honed, synchronized powerhouse, fresh from plundering the Caribbean. Under

the fearsome command of Captain Laurel ‘Leadbottom’ Hanks, this team should strike fear into the hearts of the

competition. Failure is not an option, and keelhauling is still encouraged for those not keeping up with the drum! If all else fails,

watch out for the command“ramming speed!”

THE RAY STANLEY MEMORIAL BASS TOURNAMENTAs a young boy Ray Stanley moved

to Pateros with this mother Barbara and father Henry Stanley. After graduating from Pateros High School he got a job working for the railroad. He married Joni Jones of Mansfield and they had a son named Shawn and a daughter named Shannon, whom are also graduates of Pateros High School.

Ray had a love for fishing. He became involved with tournament fishing, as the West Coast Bass Circuit Director and the local bass clubs, once the Okanogan Valley Bass Club President. Ray helped start this tournament back in 1990 and won it with partner Randy Enger in 1995. The following month he fell out of his boat while fishing below Chief Joseph Dam and drown.

The tournament is held each year, on the

3rd Saturday of July in conjunction with the Pateros Apple Pie Jamboree. We enjoy seeing many of the same fishermen since the beginning and have been introduced to wonderful new people over the years. There cash prizes for the largest total weight of five fish, the biggest largemouth and the biggest smallmouth that are caught. We also have a post weigh-in raffle for prizes that have been donated by the local merchants who have pitched in to show their appreciation for the fishermen who turn out. No one leaves empty handed, there are prizes for all.

JAMBOREE JOG

This 5K jog begins at the Methodist Church and finishes at the park. There are four male and female categories. The entry

fee is $10. For participants who would like a T-shirt, the entry fee is $18. There will also be a shorter one mile course. Throphies and medals for top finishers will be awarded.

3-ON-3 BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT

Located in the big parking lot, the tournament starts a 8:00 am Saturday morning.

One of our longer running team events. We offer 3 divisions for 3rd grade through adult, as well as a Slam Dunk, Free-throw, and NBA 2 Ball Shooting contests at the conclusion of the tournament. The entry fee is $85 with t-shirts for all participants.
