first ascents and opening new routes, especially in areas

surrounding Puerto Montt, has led to self-discovery in

addition to great adventures.

been leading environmental campaigns in Patagonia for

more than two decades.

Our first ever Patagonia Photography

Contest, held in December and Janu-

ary, was a tremendous success. We

received some amazing images, nearly

1000 photo submissions from more than 350

professional and amateur photographers from

around the world. Patagon Journals editors

chose the winning photos based on content,

composition, and originality in four categories:

Nature, Environment, Travel & Culture and Outdoor

Sports. Three Readers Choice awards were also

selected by public vote. We also had an exposition

with the winning photos at Mall Sport in Santiago

in March and April. Thanks to everyone who

His uncle, the former United States President John. F. Kennedy,

talked environmental issues with him in the oval office of

the White House when he was just 7-years-old. He was

said to have taken an early interest in animals as a kid,

creating a small-scale zoo at home and learning falconry, and with his

father, he went kayaking and rafting on rivers across the United States.

Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., third-eldest son of the late political leader of the

same name, has been passionate about the environment, outdoors

and rivers from his youth.

As an environmental lawyer, in 1984 Kennedy led a fight to restore

the Hudson River in New York. His work as chief attorney at the citizen

organization Hudson Riverkeeper led him to later co-found the Water-

keeper Alliance in 1999, which now includes more than 200 waterkeeper

organizations around the world that help communities stand up for

their right to clean water and for the wise and equitable use of water

resources. In Chile, the Futaleuf Riverkeeper was recently founded

to safeguard the Futaleuf and Waterkeeper is interested in setting

up more affiliates in the country. In addition to serving as president of

Waterkeeper Alliance, Kennedy is an environmental law professor at

Pace University in New York, a senior attorney at the environmental

group Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), and frequent writer

and speaker on environmental issues.

It is Kennedys passion for rivers that eventually led him to develop

a strong interest in Chile and Patagonia. One of his favorite pursuits

continues to be rafting rivers. With two of his brothers, he once owned

a whitewater company that for some 15 years organized every year first

descents and regular trips on rivers throughout Latin America. But he

particularly speaks with genuine awe for the Futaleuf River and what

Chile once had at the Bio Bio River. He was active in the failed effort

to save the Bio Bio, which he says is one of the most tragic losses

he has ever experienced; and in the last decade has been helping to

build international support to prevent Patagonias rivers at the Baker,

Pascua and Futaleuf from suffering a similar fate.

Patagon Journal executive editor Jimmy Langman recently spoke

with Kennedy about his long running connections to Chile and his

views on the continuing energy and environmental conflict in the

country over whether to construct large-scale dams on Patagonias

wild rivers. Excerpts:

Langman: How long have you been coming down to Chile?

Kennedy: I spent a lot of time in Latin America as a boy. I went to

Colombia for a summer to work on ranches and to travel around Latin

America. I lived in Peru during my senior year of high school. And I

went to Chile to interview Salvador Allende [the former president of

Chile from 1970-73] during the summer of 73, just before the coup,

when I also did a lot of traveling around the country and especially

backcountry skiing. Then I went back to Chile as soon as the demo-

cratic government came back. During President Aylwin, we brought

the largest expedition ever down the Bio Bio River in an effort to save

it from damming. Later, I started going down the Futaleuf with Eric

las actividades al aire libre y los ros desde su juventud.

Como abogado ambientalista, en 1984 dirigi una batalla para

restaurar el ro Hudson en Nueva York. Su trabajo como abogado

principal en la organizacin ciudadana Hudson Riverkeeper, lo llev

a cofundar la Waterkeeper Alliance en 1999, la cual hoy rene a ms

de 200 organizaciones de todo el mundo que ayudan a defender los

derechos de aguas limpias y el uso sabio y equitativo de los recursos

del agua. En Chile, la Futaleuf Riverkeeper fue fundada hace poco

para salvaguardar el ro Futaleuf y Waterkeeper est interesada

en tener ms afiliados en el pas. Ms all de ser el presidente de

Waterkeeper Alliance, Kennedy es un profesor de derecho ambiental

en la Universidad de Pace en Nueva York, es abogado en el grupo

Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), y es un escritor y orador

frecuente en temas relacionados con el medioambiente.

La pasin de Kennedy por los ros lo llev eventualmente a desarrollar

un fuerte inters por Chile y la Patagonia. Una de sus actividades favoritas

sigue siendo hacer rafting en los ros. Alguna vez fue dueo, con dos de

sus hermanos, de una empresa de rafting, que por 15 aos organiz

primeros descensos y viajes regulares a travs de Latinoamrica. Pero

habla con genuina admiracin por el ro Futaleuf y lo que Chile alguna

vez tuvo en el ro Bo Bo. l era un activista en el esfuerzo fallido por

salvar el ro Bo Bo y dice que es una de las prdidas ms trgicas

que ha experimentado. En la ltima dcada ha estado colaborando en

conseguir ayuda internacional para prevenir que los ros Baker, Pascua

y Futaleuf en la Patagonia, tengan el mismo destino.

Jimmy Langman, editor ejecutivo de Patagon Journal, habl re-

cientemente con Kennedy sobre su largas y recurrente conexiones con

Chile, y su visin sobre el continuo conflicto energtico y ambiental en

el pas, sobre si construir represas a gran escala en los ros salvajes

Langman: Hace cuanto tiempo que viene a Chile?

Kennedy: Pas mucho tiempo en Latinoamrica cuando era

un nio. Fui a Colombia durante un verano a trabajar en ranchos y

viajar a travs de Latinoamrica. Viv en Per durante mi ltimo ao

de secundaria. Y fui a Chile a entrevistar a Salvador Allende durante

el verano de 1973, justo antes del golpe de estado, aprovech tam-

bin de viajar lo largo del pas e hice esqu de travesa. Regres a

Chile tan pronto como regres la democracia. Durante el gobierno

del presidente Aylwin, llevamos la expedicin ms grande que hubo

en el ro Bo Bo en un esfuerzo de salvarlo de las represas. Luego,

The high pitched whinny scattered the baby goats. My

horse pulled back on his reigns, chewing on his mouth

piece. He impatiently scratched the dirt with his large

hoof. Anxiousness seemed to be something my horse

and I had in common. We were both excited to start the days

journey. Was his stomach, like mine, doing back flips in exhilaration

for the upcoming trip? Probably not, as this is his backyard. But

I am a ready to saunter up the side of a windswept mountain on

the back of a horse to ski a steep, backcountry chute.

I am in Argentina. I initially came to this remote part of the

world to ski mind-boggling, high-adrenaline ski descents on my

honeymoon with my then husband Jamie. This wondrous country

filled with mate-drinking, soccer-loving, passionate people stole

my heart. The welcoming natives and the highest mountain range

after the Himalayas continually called to me; beckoning me to

return multiple times. But for one reason or another, my various

trips here in the past had resulted in one perfect Andean chute

continually escaping my grasp.

The mighty Horqueta had been staring at me, tempting me

with her glory, for far too long. Horqueta is one of those mountain

peaks that screams hello to all skiers passionate about untouched

terrain. It is a series of perfect hourglass-shaped chutes that are

ominously present to visitors making their way to the famous Las

Leas ski area. Horquetas towering presence grows from the

shrubby, flat plains of the Argentine high desert to a mountain of

jagged walls six thousand vertical feet above.

El relincho agudo dispers a los cabritos. Mi caballo tir

de sus riendas mascando su bocado. Impacientemente

rascaba la tierra con su pezua. La ansiedad pareca

ser algo que mi caballo y yo tenamos en comn. Ambos

estbamos entusiasmados por comenzar el viaje del da. Estaba

su estmago, al igual que el mo, revolvindose de jbilo por el

prximo viaje? Probablemente no. ste es su patio trasero. Estoy

lista para pasear tranquilamente a caballo por la ladera de una

montaa azotada por los vientos, para esquiar una empinada

pendiente fuera de pista.

Estoy en Argentina. Inicialmente llegu a esta remota parte

del mundo para esquiar descensos alucinantes y de alta adre-

nalina para mi luna de miel con Jaime, quien es mi esposo. Este

maravilloso pas est lleno de bebedores de mate y amantes del

ftbol, gente apasionada que rob mi corazn. Los acogedores

lugareos y las montaas ms altas, despus de los Himalaya,

me llamaban continuamente, atrayndome para que regresara

muchas veces. Pero por una u otra razn, los diferentes viajes que

haba realizado hasta ac en el pasado resultaron en un perfecto

descenso andino que continuamente escapaba de mi alcance.

La magnfica Horqueta me miraba, tentndome con su gloria

por mucho tiempo. Horqueta es una de esas cimas que grita

hola a todos los esquiadores apasionados por terreno virgen.

Consiste en una serie de pendientes perfectas, con forma de reloj

de arena, que estn ominosamente presentes para los visitantes

en camino a la afamada zona de esqu Las Leas. La elevada

presencia de Horqueta crece desde las frondosas llanuras planas

del alto desierto argentino, hasta una montaa con cumbres

superiores a los 1.800 metros de altura.
