Isaiah 9 v 6

And he will be called … Mighty God

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his

shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,

Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Can a child really be the Mighty God ?

God = who He is

Mighty = the nature of His power

How can we know Jesus is God ?

1. The Old Testament foretold it

Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a

sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.

Matthew 1:23 “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel”

(which means “God with us”).

2. The New Testament declares it

Philippians 2:5-7In your relationships with one another,

have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God,

did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own

advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a

servant, being made in human likeness.

Colossians 2 v 9&10For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, and in Christ you

have been brought to fullness. He is the head over every power and authority.

3. Jesus was worshipped as God

Matthew 2 v 11On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him.

John 20 v 27&28 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your

finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.” Thomas said to

him, “My Lord and my God!”

How did Jesus demonstrate his power ?

1. Jesus had power over people

John 4 v 29&30They got up, drove him out of the town, and took him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to

throw him off the cliff. But he walked right through the crowd and went on his way.

2. Jesus had power over demons

Mark 1 v 23 - 26Just then a man in their synagogue who

was possessed by an evil spirit cried out, “What do you want with us, Jesus

of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are - the Holy One of God!” “Be quiet!” said Jesus sternly.

“Come out of him!”The evil spirit shook the man violently

and came out of him with a shriek.

3. Jesus had power over the elements

Matthew 8:25-27The disciples went and woke him,

saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” He replied, “You of little faith,

why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. The men

were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the

waves obey him!”

4. Jesus had power over sickness

Mark 3 v 4&5Then Jesus asked them, “Which is

lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?” But

they remained silent. He looked around at them in anger and, deeply distressed at their stubborn hearts, said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and his

hand was completely restored.

5. Jesus had power over death

Luke 7 v 12 – 15As he approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out - the only

son of his mother, and she was a widow. When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, “Don’t cry.” Then

he went up and touched the bier they were carrying him on, and the bearers

stood still. He said, “Young man, I say to you, get up!” The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back

to his mother.

The little baby born in Bethlehem grew up into the man who demonstrated that

he was indeed the Mighty God
