Pastor/Teacher - Jim Rickard Thursday, October 15, 2009 Grace Fellowship Church Memory Verse Duet 6:4, Hear, O Israel! The LORD is our God, the LORD is one! Mark 12:29 John 14:25-26, The Triune God. Father SonHoly Spirit Co-Equal Co-Infinite Co-Eternal Son Holy Spirit Father is not is Essence of God is Doctrine of the Trinity. F. The Doctrine of the Trinity as set forth in the Old Testament. Principle: Any member of the Trinity is not God without the others, and each with the others is God. Eph 4:4-6, There is one body and one Spirit, just as you have been called with reference to one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God, even the Father of all. 1. The Old Testament reveals a plurality of persons in the Divine name of Elohim. 2. We also have plural pronouns, Gen 1:26; 11:7, and plural verbs for God, Gen 11:7 and 35:7. The Angel of the Lord is said to be God in Ex 3:2-6; Judges 13:21-22, and references the Spirit in Gen 1:2; Isa 63:10-14. 3. Distinction is made between Jehovah and His Messiah. Psa 2:2-7 4. Distinction is made between Jehovah and His Servant, or the Angel of Jehovah; at times One, other than Jehovah, and others He is Jehovah Himself. Gen 22:15; Ex 3:2; Num 22:22- 35; Judges 6:11-24; 1 Kings 19:7 5. Psa 22:1 and 15, My God, My God, why have you forsaken me? You have brought Me into the dust of death. 6. The name Immanuel means God with us, and indicates that God entered the human sphere in the incarnation of the Son, who became flesh and dwelt among us. Isa 7:14; Mat 1:23 7. The three primary names of Deity in the Old Testament are directly ascribed to each of the three Persons. a) The First Person is Jehovah, Elohim, and Adonai. Yet these names are applied to the Second Person. He is also called El, Isa 9:6, and Jehovah, Psa 68:18; Isa 6:1-3; 45:21. Isa 9:6, For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; and the government will rest on His shoulders; and His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God. Psa 68:18, You have ascended on high, You have led captive Your captives; You have received gifts among men, even among the rebellious also, that the LORD, (YAH), God, (ELOHIM), may dwell there. Isa 6:3, And one (Seraph) called out to another and said, Holy, Holy, Holy, is the LORD of hosts, the whole earth is full of His glory. b) The Spirit is called Jehovah, Isa 11:2; cf. Judges 15:14, and the Spirit is Elohim, Ex. 31:3. Judges 15:14, When he (Samson) came to Lehi, the Philistines shouted as they met him. And the Spirit (RUACH) of the LORD (YHVH) came upon him mightily so that the ropes that were on his arms were as flax that is burned with fire, and his bonds dropped from his hands. 8. In Num. 6:24-27 the high priest gives a benediction to invoke a blessing upon the people of Israel. a) The three parts of this benediction are consistent with the ministries of the three Persons in the Godhead. b) This is similar to that of the epistles of the New Testament, 2 Cor 13:14, The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all. 9. Isaiah 6:3 is evidence of the Triunity. a) This triple adoration is answered by a single voice responding in plurality as expressed by the Seraphims doxology. This all encompassing acknowledgment includes the Father. b) In John 12:41, He observes this passage refers to Jesus Christ. c) In Acts 28:25, Paul determines that there was also the presence of the Holy Spirit. 7) The Seraph Living Creatures of Rev 4:8 also state the glorification of the Lamb as, Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty, who was, and who is, and who is to come.
