As a church, we strive in becoming a “safe place” to ask difficult theological questions and grow in our faith. Sunday morning sermons derive from the common lectionary; this year included an extended series on the Hebrew Texts: 1 and 2 Samuel, 1 Kings, Song of Songs, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Esther, and Job. Revisiting these ancient stories broadened our understanding of our biblical history as we placed them within our present-day cultural context. Biblical study continues during the week, educational offerings during the past year included: Making Sense of the Bible by Adam Hamilton, Embracing Spiritual Awakening by Diana Butler Bass, and Revival: Faith as Wesley Lived It by Adam Hamilton. Pastor’s Report 2015

Rev. Glenna L. Olumstad

Dear Friends,

It is my joy and privilege to serve as

your pastor as we embark on our third

year together. North Shore UMC

continues to engage in ministry to

those within our community and

beyond through our prayers, presence,

gifts, service and our witness. Our faith

community seeks to live out the gospel

of welcome and inclusion of all

persons.

Since our last Annual Church

Conference, North Shore UMC has

become a Reconciling Congregation,

and we adopted the following

welcoming statement on May 17, 2015:

The United Methodist Church affirms that

all persons are of sacred worth. As a

Reconciling Congregation, North Shore

United Methodist Church embraces the

message of God’s unconditional love for all

people regardless of sexual orientation or

gender identity. Our congregation strives

to live the United Methodist credo of “open

hearts, open minds, open doors.” The

reconciling process became a time of

learning and examination of our

individual theological understanding of

what it entails to live faithfully as a

child of God and as a disciple of Jesus

Christ. As a church, we strive in

becoming a “safe place” to ask difficult

theological questions and grow in our

faith.

Sunday morning sermons derive from

the common lectionary; this year

included an extended series on the

Hebrew Texts: 1 and 2 Samuel, 1

Kings, Song of Songs, Proverbs,

Ecclesiastes, Esther, and Job.

Revisiting these ancient stories

broadened our understanding of our

biblical history as we placed them

within our present-day cultural

context.

Biblical study continues during the

week, educational offerings during the

past year included: Making Sense of the

Bible by Adam Hamilton, Embracing

Spiritual Awakening by Diana Butler

Bass, and Revival: Faith as Wesley Lived

It by Adam Hamilton. These studies

offer important opportunities for

theological reflection and faith sharing.

ADULT FORUM NEWS

On November 8, Anna Voinovich, a first year student at Garrett Evangelical Seminary, presented a program on understanding the language of LGBTQIA. She helped to describe the distinctions between the categories of identity and explained current usage of terms. Anna emphasized that it is a very fluid field. She also talked about ways to be an ally to members of the LGBTQIA communities. Anna attends First United Church of Arlington Heights, which has a number of programs for LGBT persons. Anna will present her program again at the Winter Warming gathering in January. The Adult Forum was presented on behalf of the Reconciling Ministries Task Force. NSUMC.

adka Kacena moved to Glencoe in

2004 with her husband Petr, son Nicky

and daughter Caity. Nicky was in first

grade at the time and Caity was three years

old in the Park District pre-school program.

They had been living in Chicago for eleven

years before their move to Glencoe. They

began looking for a Protestant church in

Glencoe. After visiting North Shore United

Methodist Church, they decided to stay.

Nicky and Caity were both baptized and

confirmed at NSUMC.

Radka grew up in the town of Ostrava in

Moravia, part of Czechoslovakia at the time

(now part of the Czech Republic). She and

Petr met in high school. They both went to

college in Prague. Radka studied food science

at the University of Chemical Technology.

She also completed a Master of Science in

Biology at IIT in Chicago.

Because of Communism in Czechoslovakia,

Radka did not grow up going to church. She

explained that although practicing religion

was not illegal, if you went to church, other

things were made difficult such as attending

university or getting a job. Radka's father was

Catholic but did not practice.

Eventually, Radka and Petr decided to escape

the Communist regime. In 1987, they left

their families and crossed the Alps with some

friends into Yugoslavia " like in the Sound of

Music", Radka explained. They were able to

pass through some border guards. If they had

returned to Czechoslovakia, they would have

been jailed for two years. They spent the

next

two years in Italy as refugees, before

transitioning as refugees to the U.S. They

first lived in Denver and then moved to

Chicago.

As a food scientist, Radka worked at Jolly

Rancher candy company in Denver. In

Chicago, she has worked in Research and

Development for Hershey chocolate in

Waukegan, in quality assurance for Blommer

Chocolate in downtown Chicago near the

Merchandise Mart, Jelly Belly and now Long

Grove Confectionary Company. Radka

specializes in regulatory affairs, quality

assurance and food safety. As is evident from

her jobs, she also likes sweets.

Radka says that she likes attending NSUMC

because their family has many friends here

and the church is like an extended family (for

the family she left behind in Europe). Also,

she feels that there is a community; the organ

is amazing; the church is beautiful; there are

activities for her children and there are good

outreach opportunities to others such as the

soup kitchen. It has been great to have Radka

and all the Kacenas as part of the NSUMC

congregation.

“Music is the universal language of Mankind.”

H.W. Longfellow

t is through the magic of Music that human beings can express thoughts and feelings understood by all without the need for words. A Baroque Christmas in

Venice, Leipzig and London presents music for the celebration of the happiest season of the year. The music of Alessandro Marcello and Archangelo Corelli, along with that of J Johan. Sebastian. Bach and George Frederic Handel, provide the body of this festive musical events.

Arcangelo Corelli

Corelli was an influential violinist and composer of the Baroque era. His music was key in the development of the modern genres of the Sonata and the Concerto, as well as

the key to establishing the preeminence of the violin. He was the first coalescing of modern tonality and functional harmony – (Tarushkin, Richard. The Oxford History of Western Music, vol 2).

Born in the charming commune of Fusignano, in the province of Ravenna, on February 17, 1653, the wealthy landowners who had lived in this town since 1506.

Corelli composed 48 Trio Sonata, 12 violin and continuo Sonata, and 12 Concerti Grossi. It is in the latter group that we find the organ work in today’s concert – Christmas Concerto Op. 6, No. 8.

Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni commissioned the Concerto printed in 1714, posthumously.

This work bears the inscription “for the night of Christmas.” Even though the precise date of composition for this work is unclear, evidence that Corelli played a Christmas Concerto in 1630 exists.

Labeled a Concerto da Chiesa (Church concert), it follows similar structure to other Concerti Grossi of the time; however, the number of movements expands from 4 to 6. The orchestration is that of two concertino violins and cello and ripieno strings and continuo.

The concerto grosso is a form of Baroque music in that the musical material passes between a small group of soloists (Concertino) and the full orchestra (ripieno). The form developed in the late 17th century, although no reference to the name concerto grosso. It was Corelli, who used this name first.

As mentioned above, Corelli’s Christmas Concerto falls into the category of a Concerto da Chiesa. Another distinct form of Concerti Grossi bears the name Concerto da Camera (Chamber concert). The distinctions between these two forms of Concerti Grossi are primarily in structure, although with time they blur considerably.

Even though Corelli’s output was not large, he influenced several other composers of the era such as Geminiani, Locatelli, Vivaldi, and Torelli. Bach thought highly of Corelli’s ability as a composer.

Corelli died in Rome on 8 January , 1713 in posession of a huge fortune (120,000 marks) and a large number of valuable collections of works of art and many fine violins (his true love).

Giuseppe Torelli

Born in Verona in 1658, Torelli was a violist, violinist, teacher, and composer. He died in 1709 in Bologna, where his manuscripts are carefully conserved in the San Petroni archives.

Torelli’s is famous for contributing to the development of the instrumental Concerto, especially concerti grossi in solo concerti, or string in continual, as well as for being the most prolific composer for the trumpet.

We do not know with whom he studied. At the age of 26, he became a member of theAccademia Filarmonica as a violinist. In 1698, he became maestro di concerto at the court of George Frederich II. He returned to Bologna in 1701 where he died a few years later.

Alessandro Marcello

Alessandro Ignazio Marcello was an

Italian nobleman and musician. A

contemporary of Tomaso Albinoni,

Marcello was the son of a senator in

Venice. As such, he enjoyed a

comfortable life that gave him the

scope to pursue his interest in music.

He held concerts in his hometown and also composed

and published several sets of concertos, including six

concertos under the title of La Cetra, as well as cantatas,

arias, canzonets, and violin sonatas. Slightly older than

his c contemporary, Antonio Vivaldi, Marcello often used

a pseudonym, Eterio Stinfalico as his name as a member

of the celebrated Arcadian Academy. He died in Padua in

1747.

Johan Sebastian Bach and George Frederic Handel

No concert dedicated to the music of the Baroque

era would be complete without including the two

pillars of the. – Johan Sebastian Bach and George

Frederic Handel.

These two German-born composers never met,

they were born a month apart from each other in

the year 1685, in Halle and Eisenach, a mere 80

miles apart from each other.

Johan Sebastian Bach would

become one of the greatest

church musicians of all times.

George Friedrich Handel would

write up product works, without

which the history of Opera

would have developed very

differently than it is now.

In today’s musical program, we will hear some

orchestral music of Bach and one of his vocal

cantatas from that in men’s arsenal of choral

treasures. The English translation of the title for

Cantata BWV 122 is The New-born Infant Child.

Bach composed this can tie the second year at the

Thomaskirche in Leipzig. The work is scored for

four vocal soloists, four-part chorus, two oboes,

two violins, viola, taille (an instrument much like an

oboe pitched in F and the rarely used today), and

by so continual with organ.

From G.F. Handel, we hear

one of his most famous Organ

Concertos – The Cuckoo and

The Nightingale, No. 13 in F

major. A Concerto is different

than a concerto grosso, in that

the former uses one soloist

only, where’s the concerto

grosso uses a small group of soloists playing with

the full orchestra.

The title by which this Concerto became famous is

a result of the second movement, where the

sounds of these birds imitated in the music.

This work is a good example of the common

practice in the Baroque, where music is borrowed

either from oneself or another composer. The

Concerto exhibits music composed previously by

Handel for his concerto grosso, Opus 6, No.9 and

from two of his Sonatas; No. 5 and 6. The

oratorios that Handle composed made him known

in London. Some other pieces such as the Water

Music Suite, the Royal Fireworks Suite, as well as

operas added to his fame as a composer.

However, it was one single oratorio that brought

him international and everlasting fame, “Messiah”.
