PASTOR'S DESK
I recently read a journal article in which the author was lamenting how difficult it is for her to create space for silence in her life so she can hear God speaking to her. I think this dynamic is particularly true for non-retired people who try to balance careers with families and the demands of housekeeping. I even hear from retired people how difficult it is for them to create the space for silence in their lives; “busyness” knows no age boundaries! The liturgical season of Lent begins with Ash Wednesday on March 5. A primary and nearly forgotten emphasis of this season is spiritual growth through the practice of what the Christian tradition calls “spiritual disciplines”. These disciplines date to the earliest church and are rooted in Jewish tradition, from which springs our faith. Each of these disciplines is designed to be part of an effort on the part of the believer to make himself or herself “fertile soil” in which the seed of the gospel can take root. The disciplines (prayer, meditation, fasting, acts of charity, scripture reading) help to focus our attention away from ourselves and onto God and neighbor. I invite you to practice these disciplines during Lent in order to develop the habit of their practice the rest of the year. If you are not already in the habit, please make the time each day for prayer, scripture reading and meditation. Find that place in your house or wherever you can be uninterrupted and pray, read and reflect. I have found the private practice of these disciplines to be an essential part of my daily journey of faith. To aide in your devotions, I put together a guided reading plan for Lent which takes us through the entire Gospel of Matthew. Copies of this document are available on our church web site and in print in the education wing of the church. I invite you to join others in the congregation in a disciplined reading of Matthew as we deepen our spiritual life together.
Fondly, Joe

LENTEN DEVOTIONAL RESOURCES Lent is fast approaching, beginning with Ash Wednesday, March 5. In preparation for Lent, During this church year, which began the first Sunday of Advent in 2013, the majority of the gospel readings are taken from the Gospel of Matthew. To aid the congregation in systematically reading through this gospel, I prepared a guided devotional reading for Lent that assists you in reading the gospel during the forty days of Lent. Copies of this guided reading are available on the stand in the entranceway to the church. In addition, I asked you to share with the congregation the titles and authors of devotional books or web sites that you use in your daily devotions. The compilation of your suggestions is included in the devotional reading of Matthew.
Thank you so much for your response to my request. I am confident that these suggested resources will help "jump start" the devotional life of folks who do not have a regular habit of scripture reading, prayer and meditation!
Yoga! Melissa Lewis of Down Dog Yoga will be providing yoga sessions on Monday, March 3 and Monday, March 17 beginning at 6:15 PM. These sessions are low impact, and tailored to the needs of each individual. We do ask for a $5 contribution per person attending. Want to check it out? Ask Kristy Smith, Paula Ford, JJ Bain or Melissa Schwalbe for information.

Gaggle At Trinity, a Gaggle is a group of women who, well, Gaggle. The group meets every other month or so for fellowship, food and laughter, not necessarily in that order. Rules for Gaggling include no bashing of your spouse or partner; no bashing of yourself; and no bashing of someone else. Otherwise, it is a free for all conversation that begins with a brief sharing of joys and concerns and ends with new connections, new insights, and watery eyes. Other activities include walking or jogging, and some community service. The next Gaggle is scheduled for Monday, March 24 at the home of Kristy Smith. Doors open for fellowship at 6, and we will enjoy a baked potato bar at 6:30 PM. Please see Kristy or another Gaggler for more information. All women ages 18 and up are welcome.
Trinity's Highly Anticipated Chili Cook Off and Open Mic will take place on Saturday, April 5th beginning at 5:30 PM. Chili cookers, performers, dessert donors, door prizes providers and eaters are encouraged to join the fun. To enter your chili or to plan to entertain, please see Kristy Smith. Sue Layos will coordinate desserts. We are also looking for a volunteer to solicit and set up the door prize items. Admission is $8 for adults, $5 for children under 12, with a maximum donation of $25 per family. Don't miss it! All proceeds will be used to accessorize our new kitchen with a table and chairs, tools and trinkets.
