I have always loved a scene at the end of “A Christmas Carol” by

Charles Dickens. After overnight visitations

from a series of spirits, Ebenezer Scrooge real-

izes his life had been misdirected in miserly

selfishness. Awaking on Christmas morning,

he is determined to set a new course of joyful

generosity. He decides to take gifts and a feast

to the impoverished family of an employee he

had recently fired, Bob Cratchit.

Scrooge asks a boy in the street to run an er-

rand – to purchase a goose for the feast – promising a big bonus if

the boy can return quickly. In the movie version from decades

ago, the boy simply exclaims “Whoosh!” as he rushes off to help.

The children of Bethany just modeled this kind of rush to generos-

ity. They decorated dozens of grocery bags, and personally asked

us to fill those bags with food for impoverished families. And then

whoosh! On the Sunday before Thanksgiving, 87 bags of food

appeared, ready to be delivered to our local food pantry. That’s

wonderful!

I’m grateful for the children of Bethany, who have led us in a spirit

of generosity in this holiday season!

Blessings in Christ,

Pastor Greg

Our Children Lead in a Spirit of Generosity

Honoring Walt Holthaus Walt Holthaus, Bethany’s Facilities Manager, has been serving Bethany for nearly 30 years. He has quietly gone about making sure that the

heating, cooling, electrical and plumbing systems run smoothly, all the while keeping a watchful eye on the

overall appearance of Bethany (outside and inside).

He supervised the major remodeling project in 1996 which included new staff offices, library, kitchen,

bathrooms, elevator and covered drive entrance. He also supervised the later remodeling of the sanctuary

which included a redesigned chancel, relocated exit doors, new pews, and tile flooring.

His craftsmanship skills are evident in the altar, which he designed and built for the chapel, and the sign

board in the Narthex. His contacts with outside contractors have brought in quality people who built and

installed the Information Desk, the Child Check-In Desk, and various other projects.

Multiple times a week Walt can be heard whistling away as he wanders about the building doing both

small and large tasks — mostly ones that few were aware of.

Walt was also instrumental in ensuring The Playing Field had its classrooms up to code before they opened

and worked with contractors to install their new bathroom and kitchen. Since then he has provided ongoing support for their program.

A reception honoring Walt’s years of service to Bethany will be held during the 10 am hour on December 2nd in Fellowship Hall. Join us in

saying “Thank You” to Walt for his many years of selfless service to Bethany. Some photos of Walt are on page 7.

December 2 Hmong Community Celebrations (Presented by Peng Her, CEO of the Hmong Institute)

Do you know a Hmong person and wanted to ask them how they chose to come to WI? Or ask them how they make those

really good Hmong eggrolls? The Hmong have been here for over 40 years, yet little is known about them. The Hmong culture

is over 5,000 years old — deep with tradition, intrigue, and resiliency dating back to China. This talk will use the Hmong New

Year as a way to explore the Hmong culture, tradition, and heritage with a deep respect for elders.

THE CARING TEAM CORNER

As we approach Christmas, think back to Thanksgiving. What things

were you thankful for? Were you thankful for the food you ate? Give

the gift of food or money to a food pantry. Were you thankful for a

warm home? The December Simple gifts goes to the Allied Eviction

Prevention fund to help others have housing. Check out the giving

tree during Advent and pick out a charity that is of interest to you.

There are many opportunities at Bethany and throughout the com-

munity for us to give in areas that speak to our hearts. We care for

ourselves by caring for others.

If you have a care need, please contact Paster Brad or a member of

the Caring Team.

Missionaries In India Submitted by Faith Bauman

“Who are they?” asked Mrs. Butler, the wife of the first Methodist missionary in India. She was walking along the shores of the holy river

Ganges and she was seeing several women lying on the beach with their feet in the water. Her companion answered,

“Oh, these women have been brought here so sick that they will be certain near death soon. No male physician could

treat them, as they are not allowed to touch women, even for treatment. Also, they are not given food. But, when

they die, they are so close to the river that their bodies can easily be taken and thrown into the river thus achieving

salvation.”

Mrs. Butler was so shocked that she at once determined that she would try to find women missionaries to come and

teach and heal the women of India. This was in 1850.

When the Butlers returned to the USA on furloughs, Mrs. Butler initiated a campaign to find a group of women that

will form a women’s missionary society and send women doctors to India. After many years she finally was successful.

A group of eight women in Boston met to consider organizing a missionary society. They were wealthy women. They called their organiza-

tion The Women’s Foreign Missionary Society. They found a young graduate in medicine from the Philadelphia Women’s Medical College

who was willing to go to India. They also found a young teacher, Miss Isobel Thoburn who was willing to teach girls there. But what about

the financial support for anyone who would go to India? One wealthy woman spoke up and said, “Let us women walk the streets of Boston

in calico gowns and save the cost of more expensive apparel so that we can support these women.”

So, Dr. Clara Swain and Isobel Thoburn boarded a ship and headed to India in 1869. Dr. Swain settled in Bareilly in Northern India and im-

mediately began to treat women patients. She began to teach young Indian women how to treat women patients with simple nursing. She

established a hospital in Bareilly, having received some funds from a maharaja who, although he hated missionaries (they brought to India

foreign religion and culture), found Dr. Swain’s service so important he gave her some land from his ancestry land. She later was invited to

his palace to become the palace physician.

All these stories are found in the book Palace of Healing written by Dorothy Clarke Wilson, who has written many other books about life in

India. I have donated a copy of this book to the Bethany Library because the United Methodist Women (UMW) is celebrating its 150th anni-

versary of mission for women, youth and children. We are calling it our legacy. This is a fascinating story of a brave woman who served her

Lord in India.

COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS

Are you still COUNTING your BLESSINGS?? The items to count for November were shovels, rakes, yard and garden tools, etc. at 5 cents each!

For December please count your Christmas wreaths, strings of lights and decorated trees, etc. at 10 cents each. This is your last chance to

Count Your Blessings for the Playing Field. Our collection amounts are displayed on the bulletin board upstairs in the Sunday School wing. A

little bit from each of us adds up to lots of blessings for the Playing Field kiddos.

THE MITTEN TREE IS GOING UP

Attention knitters and shoppers…

On December 1st the mitten tree will be put into place in the narthex near the door to

the office. The tree will stay up until Monday, December 17th. Let's fill it with caps,

mittens, gloves and scarves - hand knit or purchased! They will provide warmth and

love to children, youth, and adults who are in need of both.

Are you struggling to come up with a meaningful Christmas gift idea

for that special someone who seemingly has it all?

We’ve got a great way to both remove some holiday shopping stress

— and warm the heart. Simply check out Bethany’s Alternative Giv-

ing Tree, located just inside the main entrance, which makes it easy to

make a donation to one of four worthy causes in someone else’s

name. Choose a card from the Alternative Giving Tree to inform the

recipient of your gift in their honor to one of four great options.

Forms will be included in church bulletins, where you can mark your

giving selection. Donations, with checks payable to Bethany UMC,

can be placed in the offering plate or dropped off in the church office.

The 2018 Alternative Giving Tree options are:

• The Playing Field Family Emergency Fund: Your gift provides a

family in need with emergency shelter, food or transportation. It

could go for basic kitchen items, needed prescriptions and medical

supplies, and more. Every cent of your gift is distributed by staff of

The Playing Field to families who otherwise would lack the essentials

that most of us take for granted.

• The Beacon: The Beacon is a comprehensive day resource center

working to provide community solutions to help men, women and

children who are experiencing homelessness in Dane County. The

center is a unique public-private partnership between the business,

faith, government, nonprofit and neighborhood sectors, and helps

more than 225 people each day, 365 days a year. Your gift will make

it possible for a person to: be presentable when going to work or at a

job interview; connect to people who can help them with community

services; get something to eat; and participate in training classes.

• Rising Sun Camp: This week-long experience for children of incar-

cerated parents is sponsored by the Wisconsin Annual Conference

and takes place at Lake Lucerne, near Neshkoro, Wis. The camp pro-

vides campers an opportunity to build a community of support, learn

leadership skills, and to creatively express themselves through the

arts. Campers also work on team-building, conflict management, and

trust building, as well as have the opportunity to experience all of the

fun things that camp has to offer — from campfires to canoeing, na-

ture trails, games, and much more.

• Madison Reading Project: This nonprofit organization works to

provide books and literacy programming to underserved children in

south central Wisconsin. The Madison Reading Project provides a

variety of services to local schools, agencies and children, distributing

books and offering literacy programming to as many children as pos-

sible. Its services include book giving, literacy programming and small-

library curation. The project focuses on providing quality books and

literacy programs to children who may not have books in their own

homes or who lack easy access to books.
