PASTOR’S COLUMN
Dear Brothers and Sisters, Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel! Gaude! Gaude! Emmanuel,
nascetur pro te Israel! It is the time of Advent that we rejoice for the Lord, Emmanuel, is coming. These last weeks of Advent have been about the prophecies; each, calling us to repentance from the ways of darkness so that we can put on Christ, the Light of the world. In this weekend’s readings, Isaiah continues to describe what happens when the glory of the Lord enters the world. Deserts will exult in abundant blooms, feeble hands grow stronger and weak knees are made firm and those who have frightened hearts we are to say: “Be strong, fear not! Here is your God who comes to save you!” As Isaiah continues, we are told that all is made right, renewed and God’s presence will change all that is broken into wholeness. Even St. James in the second reading tells us to be patient. I hear that from so many, “Oh Father, please pray that I may have patience!” But the letter of St. James also says, “Do not complain about one another, that you may not be judged.” Have you ever experienced someone who does nothing but complain? Someone who constantly has a better way of doing something, is smarter, knows more or knows something about everything? The person who is the self-appointed specialist about every possible notion under the heavens? St. James reminds us, have patience! When we begin to complain about someone, the “other” can always find fault in us, too. Patience! The Lord is coming. The Lord will be the judge of us all. This week we enter into the “O Antiphons” of Advent, the final countdown until Christmas. As each Antiphon expresses an aspect about Emmanuel, may I suggest that you take some time to consider that aspect of Jesus, the Messiah? What does it mean to call Emmanuel “Key of David” or “Rod of Jesse’s stem” or “Wisdom from on high” etc.? How does your knowledge and vision of the Savior fit into these titles of the Messiah? Do you need more patience to understand the Messiah or are you recommending that the Messiah have more patience with you?
The end of the year is quickly approaching and so is the end of this year’s Diocesan Services Fund appeal. Each parish is assessed an amount that is determined by a formula based on the total annual giving of the parish community. The goal is established by the Cardinal and must be raised by the parish. If a parish fails to reach its goal through the Pledge drive, then the amount is taken from the regular weekly collections because it is a mandated goal. Has the year financially been good to you? If so, share those blessings with the DSF campaign. If you’ve been a member of the parish for some time now, you know how much I detest talking about or asking for money. However, if we do not make this goal, we will begin to cut back necessary funding for some of our ministries because the money will have to go towards the DSF goal. Since I’ve been here as pastor, we have never come short of our goal. In fact, we usually go over the goal and then half of any overage comes back to the parish. We have truly benefited from the overages. Check with your company of employment and see if they have a matching grant fund for charitable giving. The DSF is from the entire Archdiocese and, because of that, some employers do match the funds. Right now, our shortage is more than one week’s collection. If you have not yet donated to DSF, please consider giving any amount to help offset this shortage. If you have, thank you. And, as I have done, can you consider giving more that you originally pledged?
The stock market has done well this year and often we receive the gift of stocks for a year end giving to the Church. This enables people to have a better tax advantage. Also, please consider your annual IRA mandated withdrawal. Remember that any portion of your IRA that goes directly to the Church is tax deductible. But you must stipulate the giving to the Church up front and not accept the withdrawal first. This is a great way to make your annual contribution to the parish, the DSF or even our ongoing campaign to pay off the debt on the Gonzaga Center. We depend on your generosity to assist us in the mission of proclaiming the Good News of Salvation. We depend on your generosity in assisting the Word becoming flesh in our time and our place. We need and depend on your generosity so that we may proclaim the Kingdom of God here in our parish community as well as in the extended Church of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. As St. Paul wrote to the Church in Corinth: Consider this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each must do as already determined, without sadness or compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. Moreover, God is able to make every grace abundant for you, so that in all things, always having all you need, you may have an abundance for every good work. (2Cor 9:6-8)
With my prayers for an Advent of hope,

THIS WEEK’S READINGS THIS WEEK’S READING
Sunday, Dec 15, 2019 THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT What are we waiting for? Some people make the incredible claim that, 2,000 years ago, God’s spoken Word became flesh and blood. This incarnate Word lived and served and saved—not by rising to tremendous power, but by dying and rising to new life. A lot rides on John the Baptist’s question to Jesus: Are you the one? If not you, then who? If Jesus is the one, trusting in him means embracing a startling trajectory of service and surrender in a world of upward striving. It will turn our own lives inside out. What does it cost you to say: “Jesus is Lord”?
TODAY'S READINGS: Isaiah 35:1-6a, 10; James 5:7-10; Matthew 11:2-11 (7). “Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?”
Monday, Dec 16, 2019 ADVENT WEEKDAY Invest in the teachings Magisterium is a mighty big word that means a lot to Catholics. The word derives from the Latin for “teacher.” It refers to the sacred deposit of faith, which includes both scripture and tradition, that’s been entrusted to the church. And it is the source of the church’s authority to interpret this deposit of faith, which has been divinely revealed by Christ, the “Word made flesh.” What an immense gift from God, for all of us to be shown so much. Be faithful to it.
TODAY'S READINGS: Numbers 24:2-7, 15-17a; Matthew 21:23-27 (187). “By what authority are you doing these things? And who gave you this authority?”
Tuesday, Dec 17, 2019 ADVENT WEEKDAY Soon and very soon Finally, like a long exhalation during the final week before Christmas, we pray the “O Antiphons,” which give us different ways to image the long-awaited Messiah. Some of the more colorful names are: Wisdom, Root of Jesse’s stem, Key of David, Radiant Dawn. Praying with one each day unites us to the universal church over many centuries. Check out YouTube for a video that provides historical background on the Antiphons. Take a moment to watch it as part of your Advent observation.
TODAY'S READINGS: Genesis 49:2, 8-10; Matthew 1:1-17 (193). “Of her was born Jesus, . . . called the Christ.”
Wednesday, Dec 18, 2019 ADVENT WEEKDAY Prelude to Nativity Today is International Migrants Day, reminding us that all biblical people, including the Holy Family, were obliged to roam to survive. The mystery of the Incarnation, Christ in us, is extended to all people, especially those who have been driven from their homelands by violence and crushing poverty, and who stand at our border seeking help. Should we wall them out or extend a hand in friendship and solidarity? All of us need rescuing! “O Leader of the House of Israel, giver of the Law to Moses on Sinai: Come to rescue us with your mighty power!”
TODAY'S READINGS: Jeremiah 23:5-8; Matthew 1:18-25 (194). “‘Behold, the virgin shall be with child and bear a son, and
they shall name him Emmanuel,’ which means ‘God is with us.’” Thursday, Dec 19, 2019 ADVENT WEEKDAY Lord, come and save us "O Root of Jesse’s stem, sign of God’s love for all his people: Come to save us without delay!" Today is the third day of the church's week of O Antiphons, used at evening prayer to count down the final days of Advent. Each gives a different depiction of the Messiah; each captures the longing of a people yearning to be saved. Today's imagery comes from Isaiah 11:1, where God establishes the House of David from beleaguered beginnings: “There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots.” David, the youngest son of Jesse, is as improbable a king as the Christ Child will be. If you haven’t been praying the O Antiphons this week, it’s not too late to start; nor is it too late to decorate a Jesse Tree, based on the same Isaiah verse.
TODAY'S READINGS: Judges 13:2-7, 24-25a; Luke 1:5-25 (195). “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, because your prayer has been heard.”
Friday, Dec 20, 2019 ADVENT WEEKDAY Make room at the inn There’s a special Christmas season novena—that is, nine days of prayer—that commemorates the nine months of Mary’s pregnancy with Jesus, as well as her journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem, and it is done in the nine days leading up to his birthday. Called Las Posadas, which means “lodging,” it is celebrated by many Spanish-speaking cultures with re-enactments of Joseph and Mary (often with entourage and even a donkey!) knocking on neighbors’ doors seeking a “place to stay.” A party usually ensues. Remember all those in the world who are journeying to find shelter for their children, and work to make our communities more open to them. In fact, celebrate their presence!
TODAY'S READINGS: Isaiah 7:10-14; Luke 1:26-38 (196). “O Key of David, opening the gates of God’s eternal kingdom: Come and free the prisoners of darkness!”
Saturday, Dec 21, 2019 MEMORIAL OF PETER CANISIUS, PRIEST, DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH Common ground is high ground Peter Canisius (1521-97), a Dutch Jesuit priest who was a contemporary of Saint Ignatius, was a learned and capable scholar who started many Jesuit colleges. Peter had a gift for making theological doctrine understandable. To that end, he wrote three catechisms that helped common folk and children understand the teachings of the church and ground their faith. Peter’s ability to listen in working with non-Catholics helped him respect differences and seek common ground. We ask Saint Peter Canisius to help us listen to those with whom we differ and seek common ground.
TODAY'S READINGS: Song of Songs 2:8-14 or Zephaniah 3:14-18a; Luke 1:39-45 (197). “O Radiant Dawn, splendor of eternal light, sun of justice: Come and shine on those who dwell in darkness and in the shadow of death.”

MARRIAGE ENRICHMENT WORKSHOP Sat., January 18 8:15 a.m.—4p.m. A wife has a driving
need to feel loved. When that need is met, she is happy. A husband has a driving need to feel respected. When that need is met, he is happy. When either of these needs isn’t met, things get crazy. Love and Respect reveals why spouses react negatively to each other, and how they can deal with such conflict quickly, easily, and biblically. The cost, including lunch and workbooks is $35 per couple. To register, contact Amy Auzenne at [email protected]
NATURAL FAMILY PLANNING WORKSHOP Mon., Jan. 13 7-9 p.m. Natural Family
Planning (NFP) is the general title for the scientific, natural and moral methods of family planning that can help married couples either achieve or postpone pregnancies. Since the methods of NFP respect the love-giving (unitive) and life-giving (procreative) nature of the conjugal act, they support God's design for married love! St. Ignatius will host an Introductory Session for the Creighton Model FertilityCare System on Monday, January 13 from 7-9pm. This workshop is open to all who are interested in learning more about this method of natural family planning (NFP). It fulfills the NFP requirement for marriage preparation in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. To register or for more information, contact Amy Auzenne at [email protected]

Queridos hermanos: ¡Alégrense! ¡Alégrense! ¡Emmanuel vendrá a ti, oh, Israel! Gaude! Gaude!

Domingo, Dec 15, 2019 TERCER DOMINGO DE ADVIENTO
Si no eres tú, ¿entonces quién?
