of prayer and penance, called the “Day of Prayer

for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children”: “In all

the Dioceses of the United States of America,

January 22 shall be observed as a particular day of

prayer for the full restoration of the legal guarantee

of the right to life and of penance for violations to

the dignity of the human person committed

through acts of abortion” – from the US Conference

of Catholic Bishops.

Passing along the traditions of the Church to the

next generation. As individuals, we are called to

observe January 22 through the penitential

CATECHISM CORNER Word Become Flesh

by Jackie Sinchi

“For us men and for our

salvation he came down

from heaven; by the

power of the Holy Spirit,

he became incarnate of

the Virgin Mary, and was

made man.” CCC 456

Why did the Word become flesh? Was it

necessary? Why would God arrange for

our salvation the way He did? God did it

this way for our sake. The Word became

flesh, for us. He came down from heaven

and by the power of the Holy Spirit, He

became incarnate of the Virgin Mary,

and was made man! The Incarnation

makes it possible for Jesus on the cross to

save us from our sins.

Without the Incarnation we cannot have

the Paschal Mystery, we cannot have

the redemption we need. Man offended

God and that offense is infinite. So man

needs to make up for the offense against

God, but a finite creator can not satisfy.

So what does God do? God the infinite

one needs to become man. So He does.

We need God’s grace in order to make

up for our sins. God who is invisible,

motivated by love for us, makes Himself

visible in the Incarnation. The Catechism

tells us that the word became flesh so

that we might know God’s love, that

Jesus might be our perfect model of

holiness, that we might participate in

God’s life.

Jesus is our perfect model of holiness, of

the Beatitudes. We look to Him as we

seek to live out the commandment of

loving one another as He has loved us.

We are invited to participate in God’s

life, so we might become adopted sons

and daughters so that we could receive

the grace of divine affiliation.

The truth of the Incarnation should steep

through every aspect of our lives, in our

homes, relationships with friends and

family, those we have the blessing of

serving, and especially in our own

relationship with Christ. Let’s live our lives

with joy for He gave His love freely,

without holding anything back.

parishioners and visit with friends will be served.

ST. VINCENT DEPAUL

St. Vincent DePaul for Holy Cross, Our Lady of the

Rosary, and St. Adalbert would like to thank all

parishioners for their support during 2017; total

contributions for the year were $13,959 (OLR $10,466,

Holy Cross $2,078, St. Adalbert $1,415).

Our parishes also contributed in various other ways with

the Giving Trees, and the Coat Drive at Holy Cross,

among others. St. Vincent DePaul was privileged and

able to give baskets to school families and neighbors at

both Thanksgiving and Christmas. These baskets

contained all the food necessary to make holiday

dinners for their families. In addition to those dinners, the

children at our school collected nonperishables and

they were able to provide each family with a large box

of canned and boxed foods. During the year, we have

helped our neighbors with utilities, food, appliances,

furniture and other miscellaneous items.

An additional thank you goes out to OLR School

students, as well as Principal Jacki Loffer and Megan

Bettleton. Many people were involved in the distribution

of the baskets as well as the Giving Tree items delivered

to St. Vincent Hotel. Special thanks to Emilee George,

Fred and Mary Naas, Dave and Vicky Tischler, Tina Kavy,

Al Busse, and Bill Evans. Without everyone's assistance,

our parishes and individuals alike, we would not be able

to help our neighbors as we do. God bless everyone for

what they do to give as Jesus would. May your 2018 be

blessed and prosperous.

UNBORN CHILD PROTECTION ACT

Archbishop Schnurr Urges Your Support of the Pain-

Capable Unborn Child Protection Act. This legislation,

which prohibits abortion after 20 weeks gestation on the

scientific evidence that fetuses can feel pain by that

point, passed the House of Representatives on October 3,

and is now in committee in the US Senate as S.1922.

Please join our campaign to write our Senators, urging

them to support this common-sense legislation that in

many polls 60% of Americans also support. For more

information and sample letters, visit catholiccincinnati.org/

ministries-offices/respect-life-2/unborn-act/.

PROJECT RACHEL

Project Rachel is a Ministry of the Archdiocese of

Cincinnati that serves anyone who has experienced a loss

of a child due to abortion. There are a variety of ways

persons can engage in this ministry for healing: one-on-

one conversation with a peer, consultation with a priest

(Spanish speakers available), a day of reflection for

anyone who has experienced loss (mother, grandparent,

father, sibling, etc.) support groups and retreats for

mothers who lost their child due to abortion. All

conversations and email are confidential. Upcoming

dates for Day of Reflection are January 27 in Cincinnati

and a weekend retreat in the Dayton/Northern area on

March 9, 10, and 11. For more information, please contact

Noreen at [email protected] or call the

Project Rachel Help Line at (513) 784-0531.

Feast day January 24

Patron of Catholic Writers, the Catholic Press,

the Deaf, Journalists, Adult Education

Birth: August 21, 1567

Death: December 28, 1622

Beatified January 8, 1661 by Pope Alexander VII

Canonized April 19, 1665 by Pope Alexander VII

St. Francis de Sales was born to a noble family at

Chateau de Sales in the Kingdom of Savoy near

Geneva, Switzerland. Francis was both intelligent

and gentle. From a very early age, he desired to

serve God. He knew for years he had a vocation to

the priesthood, but kept it from his family. His father

wanted him to enter a career in law and politics.

In 1580, Francis attended the University of Paris, and

at 24-years-old, he received his doctorate in law at

the University of Padua. All the time, he never lost his

passion for God. He studied theology and

practiced mental prayers, but kept quiet about his

devotion. To please his father, he also studied

fencing and riding.

God made his will clear to Francis one day while he

was riding. Francis fell from his horse three times that

day. Every time he fell, the sword came out of the

scabbard, and every time it came out, the sword

and scabbard came to rest on the ground in the

shape of the Christian cross. After much discussion

and disagreement from his father, Francis was

ordained to the priesthood and elected provost of

the Diocese of Geneva, in 1593, by the Bishop of

Geneva.

During the time of the Protestant reformation,

Francis lived close to Calvinist territory. He decided

he should lead an expedition to bring the 60,000

Calvinists back to the Catholic Church.

For three years, he trudged through the countryside,

had doors slammed in his face and rocks thrown at

him. In the bitter winters, his feet froze so badly they

bled as he tramped through the snow.

Francis' unusual patience kept

him working. No one would

listen to him, no one would

even open their door. So,

Francis found a way to get

under the door. He wrote out

little pamphlets to explain true

Catholic doctrine and slipped

them under the doors. This is

one of the first records we have of religious tracts

being used to communicate the true Catholic faith

to people who had fallen away from the Church.
