Message from the Pastor:

Liturgical life in our Catholic Schools is not an “added on” subject. It is an integral part of our daily life, studies and commitment. We believe that God is the Wisdom that has called into being every aspect of creation, and has called us to share in this awesome task. Inviting children and their families, staff and administrators to share day by day through prayer, study of Scripture, liturgy, and examination of daily life in the light of God’s Word and action in our life, we grow in the awareness of who we are, what our mission is, and the unique value of every human being. Working together, family-parish-school, we become a living page of God’s Word and a faithful instrument in God's hands. I feel blessed in sharing this journey with you.

Sincerely,

Fr. Vito Marziliano,

Pastor

Faith Formation:

Forming ourselves in our Catholic faith is a foundational element in helping each of us understand and live in the example of Christ.

At Our Lady of Lourdes, we strive to increase student knowledge, understanding and application of scripture, sacramental life and Catholic social teaching to daily life. This is accomplished by providing faith opportunities and resources to develop student understanding of scripture and its connection to the sacrament and connecting catholic social teaching the student’s daily life.

Board and Family liturgical events include: Faith Ambassador Gatherings, Masses, Retreats and Stations of the Cross. All staff and students participate in all of the Liturgical celebrations that occur throughout the year. School Liturgical events include Liturgical celebrations, offering special Intentions, Faith Day Liturgies, Shrove Tuesday & Family Advent celebrations, Stations of the Cross and Faith Formation is a part of all of our monthly staff meetings.

Opportunities for student faith development are also supported throughout the year with

our school wide monthly Virtue Assemblies and student involvement in various outreach programs such as food and clothing drives. As well, the grade 2, & 7 Sacramental retreats and school wide Advent and Catholic Education Week retreats enhance the faith development of our students.

Our Youth Faith Ambassadors are also active in a variety of activities that occur throughout the year.

Sacramental Preparation:

As Catholics, we understand sacraments to be "outward signs instituted by Christ to give grace." Together in partnership with our parish, we support the preparation of God’s children in receiving the sacraments.

Social Justice / Outreach Activities / Charities:

Catholic Social Teachings of the Church root our actions in supporting human dignity and the preferential option of the poor, which calls us to serve the most vulnerable in the world.

Our school contributes through monetary donations and acts of service to various organizations. Throughout the school year, Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School supports a variety of different organizations including: The Terry Fox Foundation, ShareLife and United Way, The Knights Table, Royal Canadian Legion (Valentines for veterans and Christmas cards for Canadian Military troops), Autism and Down Syndrome Awareness, Denim Day for Breast Cancer. Our school’s Eco-Team focuses on being Stewards of the Earth.

Recognizing Ontario Catholic School Graduate Expectations:

Framed by the Ontario Catholic School Graduate Expectations (OCSGE), our graduates will be effective communicators, reflective thinkers, lifelong learners, collaborative contributors, caring family members, responsible citizens and discerning believers formed in the Catholic faith community.

As a school we work to include the OCSGE in the lessons being taught in the classrooms. Each month in the school newsletters we highlight a section of the OCSGE. The OCSGE are highlighted in the main entrance of the school and we highlight the expectations at each of our Virtues Assemblies.

Celebrating Virtues:

A virtue is a habit or established capacity to perform good actions according to a moral standard. When we practice these virtues we strengthen them and thereby make the presence of God more and more visible in the world around us.

Each month we highlight the Virtue of the month in a school wide assembly. The monthly virtues are highlighted in classrooms and on the morning announcements. Our display case in the entrance of the school is also used to highlight the virtue of the month. We use the school newsletter and the school website to highlight the virtue that we are focusing on to the greater school community.

Visible Signs of our Faith:

Through symbol and service, we are instruments of God’s love whose work within our communities stands as a witness to our faith.

When you walk into our school you are greeted by two large crosses and an altar presented in the colours of the Liturgical Season. Each classroom and office has a Sacred Space found within it. Each office and classroom has a crucifix. Our school also has a Peace garden with a statue of Mary and a mural of Mary with biblical passages written on the walls.
