Dear Friends,
As we consider the dignity of the human person, we must first confront an issue that can easily reach the level of disorder, passing freely to compulsion and reaching in many cases obsession (not the demonic kind): our image. If you are at all concerned with your image and do not want to read the rest of this, I would say save your time and money in enhancing and capturing your image by creams, scents, trendy clothes and photo editing equipment and simply go to confession so that your deepest and truest image can be restored.
It is no secret that many are obsessed with image. The social media age—spearheaded by Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat—has proven that there is a deep concern with image. Lest you fear that I continue pointing the finger every which way but back at myself, I will immediately include that this is something that easily incriminates religious people as well.
Listen to the words the Lord directs to the Pharisees: “Oh you Pharisees! Although you cleanse the outside of the cup and the dish, inside you are filled with plunder and evil. You fools! Did not the maker of the outside also make the inside?” (Luke 11:38-40)
Now, even though the Scribes and Pharisees did not have a disordered attachment to taking selfies or updating an Instagram page, they were still viciously concerned with their image—in a completely superficial way.
Is it necessarily a bad thing to be obsessed with our image? If we are speaking about a superficial, only skin deep, things I can see in a mirror, kind of image—then yes, it absolutely is a bad thing. If, however, one is obsessed with understanding the dignity of a person as being in the image of God and what that means—then I would say, great job! Perhaps, as man’s knowledge about his capacity (do and make things) has progressed greatly, man’s knowledge of his dignity (who and why he is) has correspondingly digressed. It seems, then, that it would be more than simply a worthwhile task to rediscover the truly beautiful and unique dignity of the human person, i.e., let us have a healthy concern for our image.
Let’s see what the Catechism says about one’s image: Being in the image of God the human individual possesses the dignity of a person, who is not just something, but someone. He is capable of self-knowledge, of self-possession and of freely giving himself and entering into communion with other persons. And he is called by grace to a covenant with his Creator, to offer him a response of faith and love that no other creature can give in his stead. (CCC 357)
Clothing and cool photos pale in comparison to: self-knowledge, self-possession and freely giving oneself and entering into communion with other persons. Translated into a simple terms, we may say: know who you are, have control over your actions, and hold friendships, relationships and unity with the utmost regard. What are the special faculties or powers that we have in order to work on these things? The answer is: Intellect and Will. And these two powers come from a soul that is spiritual, and because it is spiritual it will never pass away. In fact, it will always look for union with a good and a happiness that is infinite, that has no limits (FYI this is God). The human person longs for communion with God.
What if we lose sight of our true image, or distort it, or even worse reject it altogether? How do we restore man, how do we restore ourselves to dignity lost? Through Jesus Christ. And through which means did Jesus Christ choose to restore man to his previous dignity? Through repentance—and in particular confession, say the Fathers of the Church.
Why? Because virtues are restored to man through repentance along with God’s grace, and even more through this man is able to return to his proper honor and dignity. St. Thomas Aquinas explains that “By sin, man loses a twofold dignity, one in respect of God, the other in respect of the Church. In respect of God he again loses a twofold dignity. one is his principal dignity, whereby he was counted among the children of God, and this he recovers by Penance.” (Summa Theol. III, q. 89, a. 3)
Through the mercy of God, man can always lift himself up and aspire to the greatest things, greater than he ever knew possible. This is, without a doubt the story of each convert. Mary, Our Lady of Peace, pray for us, Fr. Brian Dinkel, IVE

Are You a Registered Parishioner?
If you attend Mass here regularly, we encourage you to register as a member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church.
3 main reasons why registering is important:
1. If we as a parish do not know who is out there, how can we serve the needs of all? This includes single people or young families who may not see the need to register.
2. Registering in the parish makes Sacrament prep easier when the time comes. Infant baptisms, religious education registration, being a godparent/sponsor for baptisms or confirmations, and especially getting married whether
you are getting married at this parish, another parish, or having an international Catholic wedding. If you’re not a registered parishioner this will greatly delay the process.
3. Letters of Recommendation Sometimes there are occasions where letters of recommendations are needed from your parish pastor (ie Catholic school enrollment,
scholarships, godparent eligibility, etc.). If you’re not registered, we cannot provide this letter to you or your family.
Anyone, regardless of where they live and even though the Diocese is divided into parish geographical areas, is welcome to register at OLOP. Please note: there is a three (3) month waiting period from the date of registration before being considered a full-fledged registered parishioner. Any requests for pastor signatures on any forms, letters, or wedding
preparation paperwork will not be processed within the 3 months.
Registering is easy! Visit the Parish Office, call the Rectory Office (408-988-4585) or email us ([email protected]) to request a registration form.

Did you know that the Catholic Church has a different type of dedica-on each month of the year? August is dedicated to the Immaculate
Heart of Mary. If you've never been (or you're here every day) come visit Our Lady of Peace Church and Shrine which is dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
Noteworthy of men on is the fact that the Shrine is the only major Marian Shrine on the West Coast between Our Lady of Sorrows Shrine in Portland, Oregon, (over 700 miles to the north), and the famous Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City, (over 2,300 miles to the south). We invite you to visit our serene and peaceful place of wor-ship and experience the tender gaze and maternal solicitude of our Blessed Mother.
Located at the intersec on of Freeway 101 and Great America Park-way, the parish of Our Lady of Peace was established in 1961 in a rural community, amidst acres of orchards and fields—“out in the boon-docks,” as its first Pastor, Father Joseph G.Sullivan, fondly remembered. Fi y years later, the parish is surrounded by Silicon Valley’s corporate giants, Mission College, an ethnic variety of restaurants, Great America Amusement Park, and, recently, Levi Stadium—home of the SF 49’ers.
