This made me think about summer and the cleaning out that we seem to do with our physical selves; but what about our spiri- tual selves? What about our souls? Do we have draw- ers that are full of doubts? Closets overflow- ing with anger? Prayer time that needs dust- ing off? Have we sins that need to be washed, or thoughts that need to be wiped out? Do we have things that are causing us to drift away slowly from God? When and where does all that cleaning get done? Do you think it all gets done on Sunday morning during that hour from ten to eleven? Do we wash those things away when we wash dishes after dinner? That’s a lot of questions, isn’t it? Here, Pastor Sunny’s Rays Cuba United Methodist Church 49 East Main Street • Cuba, NY 14727 June 2009 Inside this issue hopefully, are some of the answers. Please note however, that I said “some” not “all” of the an- swers. At some point in time we all have drawers of doubt and anger, we have prayer time that needs dusting off, and sins that we need to have washed away. To accomplish that we need to spend more time with God than just that hour on Sunday morning. We need to really reach down inside us to confront those doubts, voice that anger, and ask for forgiveness and strength. We then need to reach out past ourselves to those of God’s children who don’t know about God and his saving grace. We need to pray about all those things that fill those drawers with doubt, over- flows our closets with anger, and causes us to drift from God. We need to read God’s word so that we have the skills to sweep out the gunk and grime of all those things that causes us to drift past the cluttered corners and the hurts that we have hidden under our rugs. All sounds like it might take a lot of time and energy. And you don’t want to spend your whole summer cleaning, heaven forbid! Well, ya know it’s not that hard. You see, God doesn’t just live inside those church house walls. He is every- where and in everything. So let me tell you what you can do. When you’re out there in the backyard slowly turning yourself over periodically so as not to become a lobster, spend some time in prayer. As your sitting by the pool or the local swimming hole, instead of reading the best-selling Mary Hig- gins Clark novel, try reading the best selling book of all time, written by the author of your life. In- stead of spending time in the shopping malls, buy- ing the latest summer fashion, volunteer at a homeless shelter, hospital, nursing home or school. (continued on page 5)

Another month has come and gone, an-other newsletter article to write. Thank good-ness there weren’t any more tragedies to con-template. Actually, flowers are blooming, the sun is shining and I’m having trouble getting this article really started so I left the office. As I pull into my driveway, there’s Larry cleaning out the underbrush and cutting some scrub trees. This made me think about summer and the cleaning out that we seem to do with our physical selves; but what about our spiri-tual selves?

We seem to be really good at cleaning out our closets, drawers, and garages. If you don’t agree with that, then just check out the “glory hole” about three weeks before the next rum-mage sale. We’re pretty capable of dusting all the bookshelves, sweeping away the cob-

webs, washing away the winter’s gunk and grime, taking out the rugs and beating the dust out of them, and shampooing the carpets to spruce up the house and make everything smell and look better.

What about our souls? Do we have draw-ers that are full of doubts? Closets overflow-ing with anger? Prayer time that needs dust-ing off? Have we sins that need to be washed, or thoughts that need to be wiped out? Do we have things that are causing us to drift away slowly from God? When and where does all that cleaning get done? Do you think it all gets done on Sunday morning during that hour from ten to eleven? Do we wash those things away when we wash dishes after dinner?

That’s a lot of questions, isn’t it? Here,

There are more than 34,000 United Methodist churches in the United States and in each one has at least one singer whose voice pierces the hearts of the faithful most Sundays. The talents vary, but the passion is the same. Susan Boyle, a 47-year-old single person bullied most of her life, stepped out in front of an un-friendly audience on “Britain’s Got Talent” and bared her soul. The result was the shaming of a hos-tile audience who first judged her on her looks before she had a chance to share her gifts. The les-son she taught us was to wait, don’t be so quick to judge, we are all God’s children blessed with gifts and talents. Her sudden fame seems like a good time to pause and appreciate those faithful and talented souls who are singing their hearts out for United Meth-odist congregations every week.

(continued from page 1)

I hope and pray that wherever you spend your summer that you will have spent some time strengthening your relationship with God and cleaning out your soul.

I hope that I will still see you in church (along with you

checkbook ☺) If you are traveling then I pray you have safe

travels and make some good memories. And please remember that God loves you and so do we.

United Methodist Womensubmitted by Patti Petroni, President

Fourteen ladies met on Saturday morning May 16th with a delicious brunch prepared by Doris Kellogg, Sue Simmons, and Mary Lou VanValkenburgh. Patti read a short story which contained a little white lie which was about how a well intentioned woman got herself in and out of a bind through God's mercy. Mary Ann presented the treasurer's and prayer and self denial reports. Sue Simmons answered questions about the reading program. Cindy Dutton gave an update on the recipe book which is ready to go to print. Look for dates when it will be available for sale. Thank you to Cindy, Donna Burdick, Shirley Mosher, and Peggy Pearce for typing all the recipes. Cindy says, and I believe her, that this book is going to be GREAT! Remem-ber those of you that are interested in attending the Annual Day Apart at Camp Asbury should check the bulletin board for details. As soon as it is safe to do so, we will beautify the entrances of our church with lovely flowers...thanks to Gary and Joyce. Cindy is checking on details for all the ladies to attend a dinner at "The Mill" for a dinner tentatively scheduled for June 23rd at 6 pm. There will be no meetings of the UMW in July or August but we will begin once again on September 8th with a pot luck dinner in Wesley Hall. In-stead of a "pound sale" we will have a "room sale". Buy something for $10 or less on something that could be placed in a room in your house. Label the item with the name of the room and we will do the silent auc-tion sale as usual after the dinner. It is something different to have fun with and to keep us fresh! Hope to see you there! Have a great summer.

If You Believe

Your diploma means a future without boundaries,

a world that's full of energy and fun.So as you reach for all life has to offer,

remember that you're second to no one.

Pursue your goals, yet keep your loved ones close,as you utilize your talent and ambition.

Let your friends and family give you theirsupport,

and you'll master every challenging transition.

And always, Graduate, know you can achievethe things you really want, if you believe.
