Another month has come and gone, another newsletter article to write. Thank goodness there weren’t any more tragedies to contemplate. Actually, flowers are blooming, the sun is shining and I’m having trouble getting this article really started so I left the office. As I pull into my driveway, there’s Larry cleaning out the underbrush and cutting some scrub trees. This made me think about summer and the cleaning out that we seem to do with our physical selves; but what about our spiritual selves?

We seem to be really good at clean-ing out our closets, drawers, and garages. If you don’t agree with that, then just check out the “glory hole” about three weeks before the next

rummage sale. We’re pretty capable of dusting all the book-shelves, sweeping away the cobwebs, washing away the winter’s gunk and grime, taking out the rugs and beating the dust out of them, and shampooing the carpets to spruce up the house and make everything smell and look better.

What about our souls? Do we have drawers that are full of doubts? Closets overflowing with anger? Prayer time that needs dusting off? Have we sins that need to be washed, or thoughts that need to be wiped out? Do we have things that are causing us to drift away slowly from God? When and where does all that cleaning get done? Do you think it all gets done on Sunday morning during

that hour from ten to eleven? Do we wash those things away when we wash dishes after the latest church dinner?

That’s a lot of questions, isn’t it? Here, hopefully, are some of the answers. Please note however, that I said “some” not “all” of the answers. At some point in time we all have drawers of doubt and anger, we have prayer time that needs dusting off, and sins that we need to have washed away. To accomplish that we need to spend more time with God than just that hour on Sunday morning. We need to really reach down inside us to confront those doubts, voice that anger, and ask for forgiveness and

UMW News Submitted by

Cindy Dutton, President

Nearly forty women gathered together on May 7

for a “Mother Daughter” potluck dinner at church. Shirley Poore’s group included four generations! Chloe Karn from the “Poore party” was the youngest in attendance, and who cares who was the oldest! Hostesses Patti Petroni and Evelyn Steen provided breads and beverages as well as decorating the ta-bles with lots of color, including a candy favor to take home. Following a delightful dinner, the women adjourned to the sanctuary where Laurie Smalley, the Outreach Pastor at the Houghton Wesleyan Church, entertained with her folk harp. She played seven of her own arrangements of classi-cal selections and hymns intertwined. The women had fun guessing the titles of each.

The last meeting of the year will be a “dinner out.” We will return to Turfside Restaurant in Rushford on Tuesday, June 12 at 6pm. Menu choices are: Seafood Cas-serole (shrimp, scallops and crab) for $11; Herb-garlic Chicken over Fettuccini for $9 (these two entrees also get salads) or Club House Salad which is mixed greens with grilled chicken, mandarin oranges, dried cranberries and toasted almonds for $7. These prices do not include beverage or tip. Cindy will treat all to dessert - the lemon cups that we liked so much last year.

We’ll meet at the CUMC Green Street entrance at 5:30 to carpool to Turfside.

Please call Cindy at 968-3224 with your reservation and entree choice. This is the last meeting until September, so lets have a BIG turnout!!

Rummage Sale Update Submitted by Deb Battistoni, Rummage Queen

We did it! Another successful rummage sale! When we unpacked the glory hole and all the dona-tions, Wesley Hall just didn't seem as full as it does at our Fall sale (winter coats and sweaters are bulky). We spent more time "merchandising" - dis-playing more clothing by hanging them on racks, hoping to catch the buyer's attention.

I estimated by Wednesday that the sale would probably net $600 for the UMW treasury, but was I wrong! We realized a profit of over $730! Larry and Sandy Lathrop, our guardian angels, came to bag and take what we had left after Saturday's $1 bag sale to their mission in Kentucky, and didn't even fill

their truck. Queens Virginia and Deb would like to thank everyone who helped - donating, sorting, working and cleaning up. Every-thing went smoothly. We'll do this again in October!

We will be having an opening for Church Secretary sometime this summer. Cherri and her family will be relocating to the south of Pittsburgh after their house sells.

This position is part-time, averaging 15 hours a week (daytime hours.) Experience in Microsoft Office w/ Publisher a must.

Please send letter of introduction and current resume with references to the church by June 4th.

Beginning Next month, we are going to start a new column - providing there is interest. Do you have questions regarding Pastor Sunny’s Probationary Period? Questions on what she needs to do to complete her schooling and become ordained? How about

questions concerning prayer? Or how to forgive? Or how to become more involved in our church?

Please send your questions via email to Pastor Sunny at [email protected], or drop them off in her mail slot in the upper hallway.

Again, this new column will be based on YOUR input.

Thanks in advance!

PAGE 4 JUNE 2007 THE SHEPHERD’S MESSENGER

The region surrounding Virginia Tech is receiving a faith-based message of comfort and hope from the people of The United Methodist Church through television and radio spots and newspaper ads address-ing the college campus massacre. During the week of April 23, more than 300 television spots and radio tags were reminding listeners and viewers in southwestern Virginia that The United Methodist Church in Virginia is praying

with them. On Sunday, April 22, a full-page ad in The Roanoke Times proclaimed that "fear is not the only force at work in the world today." All the media spots invite people to visit the Roanoke District Web site (www.roanokeumc.org) for a listing of practical suggestions about how to talk with children about the shootings to help them feel safe in a sometimes violent world. The site also helps visitors search for a local United Methodist church.

NURSERY NEWS Submitted by Deb Battistoni

We all know where to go when our automo-biles get broken and need to be repaired. But what do we do when our Rocking Elephant's frame is broke? We take our elephant to Mr. Mike Jefferies, Auto Body Repair and Elephant Welder!

It was a sad day in the nursery when the adults realized the elephant was not usable - our children had happily rode on this toy (and some of our children are nearing 30 years old!). We took it downstairs, thinking it might need to go to the elephant graveyard (Allegany County transfer station), but decided to take a chance to see if it could be welded or have a new part put on.

Mike took 10 minutes of his time (and he refused to charge us!) and spot welded the frame! Now he can add ‘Elephant Repairman’ to his list of accomplishments!

We took a group photo of the children in the nursery with the Rocking Elephant, and will send it to Mr. Mike, showing him how much we appreciate him!

everything. So let me tell you what you can do. When you’re out there in the backyard slowly turn-ing yourself over periodically so as not to become a lobster, spend some time in prayer. As your sitting by the pool or the local swimming hole, instead of reading the best-selling Mary Higgins Clark novel, try reading the best selling book of all time, written by the author of your life. Instead of spending time in the shopping malls, buying the latest summer fashions, volunteer at a homeless shelter, hospital, nursing home or school.

I hope and pray that wherever you spend your summer that you will have spent some time strengthening your relationship with God and cleaning out your soul.

I hope that I will still see you in church (along with your checkbook ☺). If you are traveling then I pray you have safe travels and make some good memories. And please remember that God loves you and so do we.

Congratulations Graduates!

We would like to congratulate the following people on their graduation:

June Celebrations

Submitted by Deb Battistoni, Camp Coordinator

This year we lost David Enderle, a very important member of our church family and faithful supporter of the Sunday School program. A substantial donation was made in his memory, and I said that it would be nice to honor him by sending as many kids from our Sunday School program to Camp Asbury or Camp Findley, at no cost to the camper's families. We had 12 campers send in their applications (Sara Kellogg has to decide if she wants to go to a different camp, as the one she applied to is already full).

The 11 campers and the camps that they will be attending are:

Katelyn Cornell Camp Findley Horse Camp, 6/24 to 6/29 ∗ Nicki Kellogg Camp Findley Tent Camp, 7/15 to 7/20 ∗ Zachary Botens Camp Findley Tent Camp, 7/15 to 7/20 ∗ Ashley Worst Camp Asbury Jr. High Adventure, 7/15 to 7/20 ∗ Brian Worst Camp Asbury Pioneer Camp, 7/15 to 7/20
