January 20, 2019 Second Sunday in Ordinary Time 5

This and That

As you probably know by now, I use this heading to communicate various bits

and pieces of information and thoughts. I offer these observations under two main

headings.

Confession

Various sites and priests have published guides to making a good

Confession. I add my own advice with a spirit of respect drawn from nearly four decades of parish ex-

perience.

Do’s

By all means feel free to recite your Act of Contrition in whatever language you were taught it. I am

moved by how many good folks ask permission to say the prayer in their original language. I love hear-

ing the Act of Contrition in all the languages I’ve heard so far. So, go ahead!

Always try to give an actual approximation of time, at least since your last Confession. What is a

“long time” for you may be a short time for someone else. Even a general reference to “years” or

“months” helps the priest to hear your Confession in a more knowing fashion.

When you are finished your recitation of sins please add something like, or exactly, “for these and all

my sins I am truly sorry.” This lets the priest know that you are finished and he can speak to you without

interrupting you.

Please prepare your Confession before you enter the confessional. It is best to name your sins

with the simplest terms avoiding circumlocution or vagueness.

Don’ts

Do not mention anyone else’s name in your Confession other than your own, and even that mention

isn’t necessary or even desirable.

Please avoid lengthy social or political commentary about specific politicians, the election, etc.

The Confessional is not a conversational forum. We all have our opinions but we are both in the “booth”

to confess and absolve sins and not for a good “chin wag” or expressing our opinions; though we all

have them, God knows.

Communion

Again I need to mention that if one is going to receive Holy Communion in the hand, BOTH hands

need to be “in play” (one open under the other); the hands must be free of any objects in the palms and

held UP towards the person distributing Communion. Do not snatch or take the Host from the minister.

I simply will not distribute Communion to “one-handers” or anywhere below the chest; or in semi-

folded or clenched hands.

Also, regardless of whatever any other priest might have said elsewhere, the folding of one’s arms

over the chest (like an Egyptian mummy) is NOT a common gesture when presenting oneself to the min-

ister of Holy Communion. There were some places where it was done that way in the past, but now oth-

ers are using it as some sort of signal that one is supposed to understand that the person will not receive

Communion but wants a “spiritual blessing.” There is no sense in presenting oneself on the Commun-

ion line, even more at the rail, if one is not going to receive Communion. Everyone at Mass will get the

priest’s blessing at the end of the Mass as usual.

As before, those who wish to kneel to receive Holy Communion are welcome to do so along the altar

rail on the “Saint Joseph side” of the sanctuary. A priest will distribute Communion to those who kneel.

Since we do have a regular option to kneel for Holy Communion there is no need to kneel in the aisle.

My Dear Parishioners, Daniela Conte is a brave, adorable, 7-year-old girl who has been suffering with cancer. She hopes to make her First Holy Communion next year. Please pray for her and for her wonderful family. Her mother has written about her in the message below. There is a Gofundme account to which you can donate. I know that we can count on your generosity and prayers. Thank you and God bless you., Sr. Kay McCarthy

**************************************************************************************************************** Daniela Conte is a vibrant 7-year-old girl who continues her battle with Embryonal Rhabdomyosar-coma. Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma is a relatively common muscle and soft tissue pediatric cancer. What makes Daniela’s case extremely rare is that it's in her liver. There are only a few cases of this docu-mented and almost none of them are in children. Upon starting kindergarten, Daniela was first diagnosed at the age of 5 and started chemotherapy immediately. Sadly, the first year of chemotherapy didn't kill it all and now she has started another year of chemotherapy, coupled with radiation therapy and immunotherapy. Insurance does not cover all the medi-cal costs. Daniela is also the oldest of 4 children. Her mother, Katia cares for Daniela full time while her father, Anthony works to support his family. Daniela began a new cycle of five different chemotherapy drugs. The first one was about two months ago. It was rough and it hospitalized her for about a month, but it looks as if the cancer is shrinking. The second round was a few weeks ago and didn't wipe her out that much. She has recovered from that last one and is headed back to the hospital soon. Surgery is still not an option because the main tumor is inoperable. Her doctors have discussed the possibility of immunotherapy. There has been much headway in this field. What is available now was not around two years ago when Daniela was first diagnosed. So they may decide to utilize two new immunotherapy drugs, if the chemo can’t kill it all. Her doctors are just concerned because there is limited data about these new medications. Overall, Daniela's spirits have been high. She feels good and will possibly go to school a few days this month or next month. She had a great time for Halloween. She dressed up and trick -or -treated with a lot of her friends. We'll post another update on Daniela’s Go Fund Me account once we get the results of her next scans. Thank you all again for your love and support. Sincerely, The Conte Family

About The Types of Catholic Wedding Ceremonies There are two forms of our Catholic wedding Liturgy:

The Wedding or Nuptial Mass: Often referred to as a “full Mass,” it is the celebration of the Mass with the wedding ceremony inserted in the middle of the Liturgy. It presupposes both parties are practicing Catholics and receiving Holy Communion after a proper spiritual preparation. The Wedding Ceremony: This has all the elements of the above (music, readings, vows, etc.) but without the celebration of Mass. This form is suitable for general congregations and is of shorter dura-tion than the above. PLEASE NOTE: Nuptial Masses are NOT celebrated on Sundays. The ONLY exception is when a visiting priest is invited by the family, approved by the Pastor and is willing to offer a Nuptial Mass on Sunday.

A NOTE ABOUT WINTER

WEATHER In the weeks to come, while we

try to manage snow and ice re-

moval as best as our own re-

sources, as well as those of a professional com-

pany can provide; we simply cannot guarantee

that the entirety of the parking lot and side-

walks will be dry and free of any risk under

any and all circumstances in winter weather.

Please use prudence and caution when

the conditions are snowy or icy. It is better to

stay home in bad conditions, or to come to a

later Mass, rather than risk injury.

================================ ST. MATTHEW’S PARISH OUTREACH

On behalf of the many, many families for whom you donated presents and gifts cards this Christmas, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Your great generosity and kindness made God’s love very real for these families, some of whom are in dire need. In his encyclical, “The Joy of the Gospel,” Pope Francis tells us that “each individual Christian and every community is called to be an instrument for the promotion of the poor. This demands that we be attentive to the cry of the poor and come to their aid.” May God bless you for coming to their aid. At this time we need the following food: Cereal Tuna fish Coffee and Tea Canned ravioli and spaghettios Canned fruit Tomato sauce Soup Macaroni and Cheese

================================

Dear Parishioners, The sound system in our Church is very good. However, if you are hearing impaired, you may be missing out on God’s Word. If so, we are trying to determine if you think it would be benefi-cial for you to use hearing assistive technology during Mass. information is necessary, as we will only make this investment if we know that these devices are needed and will be used. The Parish will pay the cost of installing the system. However, because of hygiene and sani-tary reasons, we would ask you to purchase your own personal device ~ a head set and receiver, which costs $190. Once you purchase it, you will bring it with you every time you come to Mass. Name _____________________________________________

January 20 Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

In the Gospel today, at the wedding feast in Cana, Jesus reveals himself to his dis-ciples and they began to believe in him.

Everyday, God also gives us signs of his love and so we also can respond in faith and trust.

Your gift to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul becomes a sign of God’s love to those who are suffering and you give them reason to believe and to trust.

“Your every act should be done in love.” (1 Corinthians 16:14) The parishioners of St. Matthew’s practice this very well! Both the Thanksgiving Food Drive and the Christmas Gift Drive were tremendous successes. About 70 families enjoyed a delicious Thanksgiving Dinner due to the food drive. The gifts that were returned from the ornaments on the Angel Trees helped about 140 families have a Joyful and Merry Christmas.

All of our members (Judy Archibold, Larry Benanati, Helen Campa, Henry Debonis, Maureen Furlan, John Gatto, Frank Harnos, Barbara & Joe Napolitano, Nancy Nestola, Mary Perry, and Annmarie Rosciano) wish to extend a sincere thank you for your generosity and continuous support over the years to help us complete our mission to serve those in need.

Let us pray...

Good and gracious God, you blew into our nostrils the breath of life. You are the One to whom we owe our very

existence.

Give us the courage to take that unpopular position

of protecting those who have no voice, the unborn child in the womb

to the person taking his or her last breath.

The life you have given us is a gift beyond measure.

Embolden us to speak the truth about protecting the child, the elderly,

and the one without a voice in the public square.

With thankful hearts, we ask all this of the One God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Amen.

What’s a cemetery doing at St. Matthew’s? This weekend you will see 100 white crosses erected in front of St. Matthew’s Church. These crosses represent the “Cemetery of the Innocents.” Each cross represents 41 abortions performed each year in Suffolk County alone. There are more than 4000 re-ported abortions/year in Suffolk County; more than 93,000 reported abortions/year in New York State; and over 600,000 reported abortions/year in the U.S. Since Roe vs. Wade legalized abortion across the U.S. on January 22, 1973, the lives of 60 million unborn children have been destroyed. This display is intended to bring awareness to the number of abortions happening in our midst in Suffolk County. It is also an opportunity to bring hope and healing by highlighting re-sources that offer pregnancy support and post-abortive counseling such as:

Life Center of LI: (631)243-2373, www.lifecenterli.org or Project Rachel: 1(888)456-HOPE, www.hopeafterabortion.com

Please see the Respect Life table after all Sunday Masses this weekend for more information. When you pass the Cemetery of the Innocents, please say a prayer for all the babies who have died because of abortion. Pray also that those parents considering an abortion will not be deceived, but rather, will protect the dignity of the human life developing inside the womb, and that those who have had an abortion will come to seek true forgiveness and healing in the infinite mercy and love of God, our Creator and Father.

"Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you; before you were born I sanctified you." Jeremiah 1:5

Focus on Religious Freedom From Catholics for Freedom of Religion www.cffor.org

"Whoever would overthrow the liberty of a nation must begin by subduing the freedom of speech.” Benjamin Franklin

How to Crush Free Speech: Facebook: Evangelist Franklin Graham was suspended from Facebook for 24 hours at the end of December, for his stand on biblical beliefs that were posted in 2016. Graham accused the social media giant of actively "censoring free speech." "Well, now we know. Facebook has a secret rule book for policing speech. I was banned from posting ... because of a post back in 2016 about North Carolina's House Bill 2 (the bathroom bill). Facebook said the post went against their 'community standards on hate speech.' Facebook is trying to define truth." Even though his account was restored, the suspension raises serious questions as critics ask, if Facebook is willing to block one of the most prominent Christian leaders in the world, then what's next?

Apple: Apple pulled a Christian app from its App Store after a small group of 356 LGBT petitioners demanded the app be removed. The app from the online store is designed to help individuals struggling with same-sex attraction. Living Hope Ministries designed the app to "proclaim God's truth as we journey with those who are seeking sexual and relational wholeness through a more intimate relationship with Jesus Christ." Living Hope is "a ministry that for nearly 30 years has helped individuals resolve their feel-ings they deem incongruent with their faith. We help people deepen their relationship with Je-sus Christ through Bible study and accountability. We walk with them to align their lives with the teachings of Jesus Christ," said Ricky Chalette, executive director of Living Hope Ministries.

After its victory intimidating Apple, Wayne Besen, director of the LGBT group said, "We de-mand that Google and Amazon immediately stop selling and promoting this app ..."

God, who are unity in three holy persons Father, Son, and Holy Spirit

you have called us to live in peace with all people. You have also called us to work toward unity

in purpose to spread the Gospel to all nations. Graciously give us the courage and strength to work toward unity,

and act toward each other as brothers and sisters. We ask this in the unity of God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Amen.
