All Are Sent Fifty days after Easter Sunday we celebrate the fulfillment of all God’s promises in the feast of Pentecost, a feast that has sometimes been called the birthday of the church. One last time we are reminded that we Christians have received the Holy Spirit, not for our own benefit, but to enable us to follow our Christian vocation.

The centerpiece of the scriptures for Pentecost is the account in Acts of the Apostles of the sending of the Holy Spirit to the disciples. The other readings for this Sunday help us to understand what it means to live out our Christian vocation. Paul’s letter shows us the gifts and fruits that the Holy Spirit gives to us. John’s Gospel reminds us that Jesus has sent all his disciples to share his forgiveness and peace, through the power of the Holy Spirit. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Treasures From Our Tradition The disciples gathered on the fiftieth day after the Resurrection were not keeping their first Pentecost. For them, Pentecost was the fiftieth day after Passover, a feast of the first fruits of the harvest. It was the second most important feast of the year. Today, Jews gather on the eve of the feast to study scripture and the law, and after the feast begins at sundown, spend the day in joyful social gatherings. The meaning of the celebration is the giving of the law on Mount Sinai, so for Christians the connection to the gifts of the Holy Spirit is obvious. In Sicily and in the Pantheon in Rome, today the descent of the Holy Spirit is enacted with a stunning ritual. Some churches there have an “eye” in the roof open to the sky, called an oculus. After the Gospel today, thousands of rose petals fall from the oculus onto the assembly. Churches and homes are decked in greenery and flowers to express the new life the Holy Spirit brings on this, the “birthday of the church.” Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Fire, Which Parted And Came To Rest On Each

Sacraments, Liturgy and Prayer Caution: Spirit At Work If Pentecost celebrates the gifts of the Spirit, it can tempt us to separate the Spirit from the Father and Jesus. Sometimes we think of the Father as the God of the Old Testament, Jesus as center of New Testament, and the Spirit as God of the present age, almost as if the Father and Jesus were enjoying their retirement. No, we have one God who is over all and in all. The Spirit has been active in all ages. The prophets were empowered by the Spirit to proclaim God’s word to Israel. Jesus was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus was filled with the Spirit as he preached and worked miracles. Then at Pentecost the disciples were filled with the Spirit. The Spirit’s gifts are meant to be shared. The prophets could not help proclaim God’s message. Jesus shared all he knew with his disciples. The disciples went out to the world to spread the news of Jesus’ death and resurrection. So we, too, are given gifts to be shared. As we come to realize how much God has done for us and how close he is to us, we will want to share that with others. Obviously, we can’t make everyone believe in Jesus. But how sad would it be if someone we know was looking for the truth and we neglected to offer it? Tom Schmidt, Copyright © J. S. Paluch

Ministry News

Respect Life Ministry Spiritual Adoption Program Week 33: Your baby’s head size has increased 3/8ths of an inch due to the rapid brain growth. Neurons and synapses are developing in huge numbers. Forming connections in your baby’s brain will give him the skills he needs to thrive as a newborn. While most of your baby’s bones are hardening, his skull is quite pliable and not completely joined. The bones will be able to move slightly to make birthing easier. You baby takes intermittent deep breaths! This breathing exercises muscles and encourages his lung cells to produce more surfactant (a protein essential for healthy lung development). If your baby is a boy, his testicles will be descending from his abdomen into his scrotum. Your infant is now 17.2 inches long and weighs 4.23 pounds.

“Even among terminally ill patients, a request to die is nearly always a cry for help. ... Isaiah 43 Program

Catholic Charities’ Isaiah 43 program has more children enrolled than mentors. We are searching for a few generous volunteers to step up so each child can be matched with a mentor. Isaiah 43 pairs young people ages 10-18 with mentors for a one-on-one relationship. The program focuses on building community, strengthening relationships, goal setting, and Christian values. Mentors are not perfect people. A good mentor is someone who listens and who is reliable and caring. Mentors must be at least 25 years old and commit four hours a month to the program for 14 months. You do not have to be Catholic to be an Isaiah 43 mentor, but you must belong to a Christian church and get a recommendation from a clergy member. Contact K. Patrick Kemmerly at [email protected] for more information.

Soulcore Class at Mary Queen of Peace SoulCore is a movement born from the desire to nourish body AND soul through prayer and core strengthening, functional exercises. The need to involve the senses in interior prayer corresponds to a requirement of our human nature. We are body and spirit, and we experience the need to translate our feelings externally. We must pray with our whole being to give all power possible to our supplication. (Catechism of the Catholic Church 2702)

The workout involves a combination of core-strengthening and isometric exercises, stretching and overall strengthening of the entire body. We begin with some basic stretches to warm up the body and recite the Apostle’s Creed. Push-ups are done throughout each of the Our Father’s. The movements vary for each of the Hail Mary’s. And a stretching position of surrender brings us to each Glory Be. Each Mystery begins with a scripture verse and a reflection, offering a time of rest. The end result is a feeling of relaxation, strength and renewal – of body, mind and soul.

Come join us on Fridays from 10-11am in room 11/12 in the parish center. The suggested donation per class is $10 for those who are able. For more information, you can contact Brandi at [email protected] or Cheryl at [email protected]

Please note: We strongly recommend that you consult with your physician before beginning any exercise program.

Called By Name One of the ways the Vocation Ministry at Our Lady of the Lake is asking for support from our parishioners is by prayerfully considering young men and women who may be called to the Priesthood or Religious Life. Perhaps the Lord Jesus is calling him/her to consider a life of service in the Church as a Priest, Sister, Brother or Deacon. Parishioners can put forth names of potential individuals by filling out one of the “Called by Name” cards, which are available in the Church office. These cards have been provided by the Vocation Office in the Archdiocese of New Orleans. Fill out the back and place it in the collection basket or give it to the church office. Your name is optional. You may also email Dwight and Mary Johnston at [email protected] and give the name, phone number and email of the person you see as a good candidate.

The Opioid Epidemic Presentation at MQP Mary, Queen of Peace’s Substance Addiction Ministry presents The Opioid Epidemic: What Is It, and How Does It Affect Me? on Tuesday, May 22nd from 7 until 8:30 PM in Parish Center room 11. The speaker will be Heather Gernold. She currently serves as the Training, Education and Technical Assistance Coordinator for the State Targeted Response to the Opioid Epidemic, working to get people into treatment and recovery.

Administration and Operations

Registration/Stewardship FAQ How do I register? Online registration is available at our website under “Contact Us” or you can register in person in our Parish Life Center.

What information do I need to update when it changes? Those already registered should update your personal information if any of the following change: address, contact numbers, email addresses, marital status, deaths, additions to family/household.

When should my grown child be taken off of my record? Adult children who have moved or married are encouraged to register at OLL or in their parish of residence.

Can I be registered in more than one parish? No, you can only be registered with one parish who will be sacramentally responsible for you and your family.

How do I receive envelopes? When you register, you will begin receiving envelopes when our next quarter report goes out to the company. If you sign up for online giving, we remove you from envelope distribution. If you do not wish to receive envelopes, please call the office at 985-626-5671 or email [email protected] and request to be removed from the distribution list. Why should I give to the Church? Only with the sacrificial offering of all our members, can we ensure that Our Lady of the Lake remains a vibrant, active faith community. With your offering you can ensure that we are able to meet our financial obligations to maintain our ministries, programs and facilities, pay a just wage to our parish staff, support the

needs of the larger Church and assist our brothers and sisters in need. Are contributions tax deductible? Yes. We will have

information on requesting your tax statement in upcoming bulletins. If you participate in online giving, you can print your statement through your online giving account at your convenience.
