SIXTEENTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME July 22nd, 2018 YEAR B Taking Sunday Seriously — Poland Leads the Way …Nicholas Wolfram Smith The European nation’s new law sharply restricting Sunday shopping provides an opportunity to take a closer look at American habits. Sunday has just become a lile less busy in Poland, thanks to a new law banning most commercial shopping that took effect in March. And Poland’s move, which bucks the prevailing trend in secularized countries toward an ever-more commercialized Sunday, could provide a construcve example for the United States, where the network of state “blue laws” that once restricted Sunday business acvies has been substanally reduced. The Polish government enacted a new law that bans most businesses from being open more than two Sun- days a month in 2018. By 2020, retailers will only be able to open on seven Sundays a year. The law, inially proposed by the Solidarity labor union in 2016, was endorsed by both the ruling Law and Jusce Party and the naon’s Catholic bishops. Some excepons remain: Gas staons, cafes and pharmacies, among others, will be unaffected by the law. Small family businesses can remain open, as well, on the condion that only the owners work on Sundays. Polish President Andrzej Duda praised the law for helping workers to spend me with their families on Sun- days and ancipated it would help strengthen Polish society. Natural and Divine Law Sunday closing laws are rooted in natural law — a recognion of the importance of a common day of rest. Courts have agreed with what the Church has always taught — that the benefits of a day of rest are knowable through natural law. Supreme Court opinions upholding the constuonality of Sunday closing laws found that regardless of the religious origin of the laws, they were important in maintaining the “health, safety, recreaon and general well-being” of the public. But, of course, for Chrisans, there are religious obligaons, as well. Father Bill Peckman, pastor of Sts. Peter and Paul in Boonville, Missouri, told the Register that when he discusses how to observe Sundays with parishes, he emphasizes that me for worshipping God at Mass is integral, “not something that we do if we can fit it into the schedule.” Father Peckman said that while people oſten have commitments to other acvies on Sunday — ballgames or work, etc. — “part of being a faithful Catholic is knowing what to say Yes or No to.” Unnecessary work, he said, should wait for another day. “The day of the Lord is for our good and isn’t meant to be a burden.” Pope Francis: In missionary work, prayer comes first. By Hannah Brockhaus Vacan City, May 28, 2018 / 07:17 am (CNA/EWTN News).- Every Chrisan is called to be a missionary through prayer, working in collaboraon with the Holy Spirit, who gives prayer efficacy, Pope Francis said in a video message to the Ponfical Mission Sociees Monday. “Prayer is the first ‘missionary work’ – the first! – that every Chrisan can and must do, and it is also the most effecve, even if this cannot be measured,” the pope said May 28. “In fact, the principal agent of evangelizaon is the Holy Spirit, and we are called to collaborate with Him.” Announcing the Gospel is a “common task,” Francis said, encouraging Catholics to support areas where the Church is new. Through support for the missionary sociees “the Church connues to open itself to everyone and to joyfully proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ, Savior of the world,” he said. The Ponfical Mission Sociees is an internaonal secretariat overseeing Catholic missionary sociees under the jurisdicon of the pope. It helps support churches, especially in areas where Chrisanity is new or not well- off. The group is meeng in Rome for a general assembly through June 2. Pope Francis said these sociees distribute aid, in the name of the pope, to churches around the world which need monetary assistance for priests and catechists, seminaries, or pastoral and evangelical work. The sociees financially support missionaries, he said, but especially, they support evangelizaon with prayer, so that the Holy Spirit may be present, because it is the Spirit who advances evangelizaon.”

SIXTEENTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME

July 22nd, 2018 YEAR B

Taking Sunday Seriously — Poland Leads the Way …Nicholas Wolfram Smith

The European nation’s new law sharply restricting Sunday shopping provides an opportunity to take a closer look at American habits.

Sunday has just become a little less busy in Poland, thanks to a new law banning most commercial shopping that took effect in March. And Poland’s move, which bucks the prevailing trend in secularized countries toward an ever-more commercialized Sunday, could provide a constructive example for the United States, where the network of state “blue laws” that once restricted Sunday business activities has been substantially reduced. *REFLECTION* THE MOST HOLY TRINITY …continued from front page

3. continued… The Church from the beginning professed faith in the Most Holy Trinity and the Church defended this truth before here-sy. The Church prays and celebrates Sacra-ments in the name of the Holy Trinity. Also during the annunciation, the Angel recalls the three Persons of the Holy Trinity. (Lk 1,35).

4. The Scriptures calls The Son of God - “The Word”, and the Holy Spirit is called “Love”. (The Holy Bible says that through the Holy Spirit the love of God has been poured into our hearts through the Spirit of God dwelling within us. (Romans 5,5).

5. God The Father we ascribe the Creation of the universe. God The Son we ascribe – the Re-demption of a man. God The Holy Spirit - we ascribe our sanctification through His grace, but we ought to remember that how many times God acts – so the whole Holy Trinity acts.

6. For our mind the Holy Trinity is the Mystery. A mind cannot imagine that in God there are three Persons, because on earth we don't have any example, which can help us to understand that God is The One in Three Persons. Also after the revelation of this Mystery by God, the hu-man mind cannot fathom it. But the mind does not see any contradictions in it, that in God there are three Persons. If something is not possible in the material world, it does not mean that it is not possible in God's world, where other laws reign here on earth.

7. Holy Trinity is our spring (from Her comes all life) and predestination (to Her we drive to our last goal). This is the oldest prayer of praise of the Holy Trinity. “Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was, is now and will be for ever. Amen”.
