4th Sunday of Advent| 4o Domingo de Adviento 2 From the desk of Fr. Al Ezeonyeka Desde el escritorio de P. Al Ezeonyeka

Mary, Our Mother I am writing this short reflection on the feast of our Lady of Guadalupe. On a day like this, I think about the amazing love of the Blessed Mother – a love that’s behind all her visits around the world. I think about how my relationship with her has been a catalyst in my priesthood. People often call me a Marian priest because I always invite Mary our mother to intercede for us during Mass. It’s a bit of a stretch to call me a “Marian priest”, however, there is no question that Mary has had a huge impact on me. My conversion took place in 1988 among the Catholic Charismatic Renewal. That evening, when I left the church – SS Mulumba and Davis Catholic Church, Lagos – I went across the street to a Catholic bookstore and bought a rosary and a Simple Prayer Book, which contained basic Catholic prayers. I promised myself that I would say the rosary daily, attend Sunday Masses on time and sit in front so as to hear the priest. Since then, the Blessed Mother has guided me, strengthened me, inspired me and most importantly, helped me to develop a deep relationship with her Son, Jesus Christ. I am convinced that without the rosary, I wouldn’t be where I am today. By making Mary the Mother of his son, God made her the mother of ALL Christians. In Revelation chapter 12 we read that the dragon was enraged at the woman [i.e., Mary] and went off to wage war against the rest of her offspring [i.e., children]—those who keep God’s commands and hold fast their testimony about Jesus (Rev 12:17). Note, God does not make a mistake. If he made Mary the mother of all believers, then he has also entrusted her with the motherly care of Jesus’ followers. Mary takes this motherly role very seriously. At the wedding feast at Cana, she saved the day by helping the couple to obtain some wine from Jesus (Jn 2:1-12). She set out in haste and traveled to the hill country to a town of Judah to visit her relative Elizabeth (Lk 1:39). Since then Mary has been paying motherly visits to different parts of the world including Guadalupe in Piaui, Mexico, Lourdes in France, Fatima in Portugal, Cartago in Costa Rica, Knock in Ireland, to mention but a few. To Juan Diego and to all of us, she says, “I wish that a temple be erected here quickly, so I may therein exhibit and give all my love, compassion, help, and protection, because I am your merciful mother…” I truly recommend daily rosary to all, for those who have recourse to Mary, our Mother shall never be disappointed.

Merry Christmas to you all!

Its Christmas week but I got to be honest it doesn't really feel like Christmas this year. This has been a crazy year filled with a pandemic, shutdowns, fires, and so many other things that for me personally and I know others it just feels like a haze. One thing I am truly grateful for is that we are still able to celebrate mass even in the midst of another shutdown. Jesus is the reason for the season and this year, more than ever, we need to come together to celebrate the birth of Christ in our lives. In the midst of all this insanity, God prevails, and our faith keeps us strong. So, however you are celebrating Christmas this year, enjoy your time, and let Christ be at the center of it all!

YOUTH MINISTRY MINISTERIO JUVENIL [email protected]

EVERY FRIDAY Between 9:00am 10:00pm

Come and spend on hour in Adoration with our Savior.

“Eucharistic Adoration holiday schedule. Our Adoration schedule continues on Fridays from 9:00am to 10:00pm, with the exception of the following Friday’s

when it will not be available: December 25th & January 1st, 2021. Thank you to all adorers who have been faithfully committed to spending a specific hour with our Lord Jesus fully present to us in the Blessed Sacrament. Particularly during this time of pandemic when we are required to be outdoors for Adoration. May our Lord richly bless you for your sacrifice! What a beautiful time to make this gift of yourself, to Jesus, our King. As St. mother Teresa of Calcutta tells us, “when you look at the crucifix, you understand how much Jesus loved you. When you look at the Sacred Host you understand how much Jesus loves you now.” Have a Blessed Advent and Holy Christmas season.

THE ETERNAL GOD King David wished that the ark of God might have a more permanent home. David may have envisioned something like the cedar palace where he resided. God had in mind something more: a throne where David’s descendants would rule for ever, a kingdom where Jews and Gentiles alike would be welcome. Mary’s prayerful nature led to an even more disturbing message. She would conceive and bear a Son though she was not yet married. “How can this come about?” Mary wondered. “The Holy Spirit will come upon you,” she was told (Luke 1:35). Mary’s acceptance of this difficult challenge ushered in this, the final age of God’s reign. What was once a secret known only by chosen people like King David and his descendants must now be made clear to all so that, as Saint Paul wrote to the Romans, we can be brought to the “obedience of faith” “according to the command of the eternal God” (Romans 16:26).
