Pastor Paul’s Pondering
“If you do not say good-bye, then you cannot say what comes next. And what comes next is always hello.” - Robert Benson
Hello friends at SSUMC! Seven years ago the Lord gave me an opportunity to come to Bowling Green and pastor the State Street UMC. I said “yes” to Bishop King and we came. It was in those days of change that I recalled a story my Dad told me long ago about the time he was appointed to the Jackson Methodist Church in 1957. His DS told him that they were a congregation who needed his help and he needed my Dad to just go “and love them.” That’s what my Dad did. He, my mother and I in her arms as a few months old, went and loved them. They love us still. When I came to you I came to do one thing: love you. I’ve tried to do that over the last 7 years. That loving you has brought us through to where we are now getting ready for another change. The Lord has given Ellen and me another opportunity, this time to go “home.” In less than three months we will pack up our things, see our house and go to the Prestonsburg District to serve and just “love them.” We are sad to leave you, but are very excited to go. This chance to go means saying “good-bye” to you, but means saying , “Hello” to new opportunities for ministry. And honestly we look forward to them. This move gives us the possibility of helping and reconnecting with people in old and new ways. It will be good for us and we believe it will be good for State Street in many ways too. Our saying “good-bye” here means an opportunity for you to say “Hello” to Dr. Jay Smith, his wife Marian and their son, Jericho. He will come and do one thing: Love you! Please take time in this Circuit Writer to read more about them in the article provided. So, Robert Benson is right: “If you do not say good-bye, then you cannot say what comes next. And what comes next is always hello.” God is in the good-byes and hellos of our lives! Aren’t you glad he is in charge? And so, dear friends, good-bye! Good-bye and God bless you!
In Christ, Pastor Paul A. Fryman
THE CIRCUIT WRITER 2
Dear Fellow SSUMC Members: The Staff/Parish Relations Committee is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Jay Smith as our new Pastor at SSUMC. Dr. Jay (yes he is a basketball fan!) will be joining us on June 30, 2013 to assume duties as our Senior Pastor. Jay graduated from Kentucky Wesleyan College in 1985, was ordained a deacon in the former Louisville Conference in 1987, graduated from Candler School of Theology, Emory University in 1988, and in 2000 earned his doctorate from Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, DC (with a focus on Christian Spiritual Formation). Dr. Jay has over 30 years in ministry and has served for the past seven years as District Superintendent for the Madisonville District. He previously served at Sample/Union Star churches in Breckinridge County, Bright Star UMC in Douglasville, GA, Liberty/Centertown/Bald Knob churches near Beaver Dam, Wesleyan Heights UMC in Owensboro, and at Jeffersontown UMC and Crestwood UMC in the Louisville area. Jay has been married to and shared a strong ministry partnership with his wife Marian for 29 years. Marian is originally from Columbia, KY. She founded and directed the Hospice of Ohio County in 1989, and in 1990, having completed her bachelor's degree at Western Kentucky University (Go Tops!) accepted a nursing teaching position at Kentucky Wesleyan in Owensboro. Marian later completed her masters and nurse practioner’s degrees (U. of L.) and began teaching full-time at Bellarmine University. This past year she completed her doctorate of nursing practice degree from the University of Southern Indiana and has served as the Department
Head of the nursing program at Lindsey Wilson College. Jay and Marian have one son, Jericho, who came to them from South Korea as a wonderful adoption blessing in 1995. Jericho will be graduating from high school this spring and plans to attend Lindsey Wilson College this next fall. According to his dad, Jericho is a sports fanatic and loves to play basketball and golf, fishing and swimming. Dr. Jay comes to us with a wonderful reputation as a teaching pastor with excellent preaching skills. He admits that his Greek is a little rusty, but he loves to get into the original Word and to share it with others. He is clearly passionate about his job as a pastor and has a wealth of knowledge, experience and love. When asked what message he would like to convey to SSUMC, he said this…
“I feel so blessed to be following someone like Paul Fryman. His life and ministry speak for themselves. Marian, Jericho and I are thrilled to be coming to State Street, and by the grace of God, want to help the church live into the next chapter of its great witness for Christ in Bowling Green and beyond.”
Please help us in welcoming Jay, Marian and Jericho to SSUMC.
Sincerely,
Mike Gardner, SPRC Chair

A very special thank you to Richard Dowse.
Richard made a donation to SSUMC for the purchase of new banners for our sanctuary. We have been able to purchase new banners for Palm Sun-
day, Easter, Communion, and Ad-vent. We were also able to purchase two banner brackets to keep all of
our banners hanging in storage when they are out of season. We can
not thank Richard enough for his generous donation. The banners will
be enjoyed for years to come and will be a visual reminder of God’s
love for all of us.

Many thanks to all of you who remembered me in your prayers, sent cards, made a phone call, or paid a visit during my recent 16-day stay in the hospital with the flu, bronchitis, and asthma. There surely is not another church in Bowling Green with so many caring people as we have at State Street. I am feeling much better now and hope to soon be able to be with you for our wor-ship service and other activities of the church. Thanks so much for remembering me at this time.
Marcella Brashear
Thank you State Street UMC for your giving spirits! You donated $1,993.67 towards the Wesley Foundation's Spring Break Mission Trip to Tegucigalpa, Honduras. While there the team built two houses, visited several orphanages, fed the homeless, and fed people living at the city dump. Also, due to your generosity we had a surplus in our budget and were able to put a new roof on a woman's home and complete some much needed repairs on the full time missionaries' car. Your support has truly been a blessing to the students and the people of Hon-duras!

Cooper is a pink mouse that lives and works with an old man in a cheese shop. One day he cannot find the old man and is evicted from his home. Three children bring him to a homeless shelter where they and their mother live. He learns the children at school do not play with the homeless children and because they move so often they do not get the proper education to perform as well as the others in there classes. The story ends with the old man and Cooper reunited and the mother and Cooper running the store and the mother and children given a home. COOPER’S TALE is written by Ralph Da Costa Nunez and William Schrager and illustrated by Madeline Gerstein Simon. It is for a child to learn and understand about homeless children’s lives and circumstances. The book is on the table in the hallway at the top of the stairs on the second floor. Check it out by dating ah signing the borrower’s card and placing it in the file box.
