1 JULY 2015 PEOPLE OF HOPE The theme of the recently-completed Central States Synod Assembly was Leading With Hope. Bishop Roger Gustafson reminded us that the theme evolved in part out of the 2014 Assembly theme, Fear and Hope: Living at God’s Table. Of course, both fear and hope are present in our congregation and our community, as we look to the future. But as the Bishop noted, hope is our most dominant characteristic as people of God. That hope comes to us as a gift. Hope allows us to face the future with confidence, because while we may not know what the future holds, we do know who holds the future. Bishop Gustafson’s words struck a chord in my life as a Christian and as a Pastor. I do not see myself as a fearful person, and I do know who holds the future. Still, there are times when hope is elusive. If hope is the desire for something, with an expectation for fulfillment (as the Dictionary says), we spend our whole life waiting for God to show us His promised future. Sometimes the circumstances around us and within us cause our hope to waver. Still we press onward, simply because hope is a gift that enables us to move forward with confidence in God’s present action and future promise of eternal life. Ultimately we move forward in hope because God has promised to be with us in the most hopeless of times. That promise is validated in Jesus’ dying on the cross, the ultimate hopelessness. In his book Wishful Thinking, the preacher Frederick Buechner says this about the cross: “The symbols of other religions suggest beauty and light. The symbol of Christianity is an instrument of death. It suggests, at the very least, hope.” May hope be a guiding force in the years ahead, not only for the Central States Synod, but also for us of Bethany Lutheran Church. Fear is easy to come by in these days, but hope is the more valuable commodity because it is rooted in God’s grace and mercy. Hope enables us to face the future with the confidence that nothing—not even death—can come between God’s love and us. We live in hope because God, in the person of Jesus Christ, has died for our sins and has risen from the dead to give us life. Let us rejoice in the hope that is ours, and let us share that hope with everyone we meet. Pastor Loren D. Mai

JULY 2015

PEOPLE OF HOPE

The theme of the recently-completed Central States Synod Assembly was Leading With

Hope.

ELCA Youth Gathering Brings Thousands to Detroit In affirmation of their baptismal promise to “serve others and follow the example of Jesus,” almost 30,000

youth, adult leaders and others from the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) will participate in

the ELCA Youth Gathering July 15-19 in Detroit. Meeting under the theme “Rise Up Together,” the

Gathering will offer youth an opportunity to strengthen their faith and discover their call to serve the world –

at home and abroad. The ELCA Youth Gathering is a triennial event that brings together thousands of high

-school age Lutherans from across the country and overseas for faith formation, worship, fellowship and ser-

vice. Heidi Hagstrom, Youth Gathering program director, said the Gathering theme and program is based on

the Gospel of Mark. “Many young people have limited experience with what it means to be part of the Lu-

theran Christian witness in the world. Many don’t experience other Lutherans outside of their family or con-

gregation. With such a small circle of influence, most young people think that the way they worship in their

congregation or the values their congregation espouses is the way all Lutherans practice or express their

faith. The beauty of Christ’s church is that there is room for all under the tent of mercy made real through

Jesus’ death and resurrection. We need the witness of young people in that community of Christ’s church,”

THE SUMMER FOOD SERVICE PROGRAM

Once again our community is blessed with a pro-gram that will provide a noon meal for children and teens ages 1-18 from May 21-Aug. 12, M-F, at the Methodist Church, 224 South Main St. (227-3326). (No meals weekends, Memorial Day, or 4th of July)

Bethany Lutheran Church needs 4 volunteers per day for the weeks of July 20-24 and July 27-31. Hours are 10:45 am until 2 pm which includes set-up and clean-up.

Please call our church office, 227-2167, to volun-teer. Remember: God's Work, Our Hands!

anniversary of his ordination. Ordained in 1970, Pastor MacLennan was for many years the cam-pus pastor and later, professor of religion, at Beth-any College. We give God thanks for his ministry!

Pastor Charles Christensen born July 11,

1929 died June 9, 1915. A memorial service was held Saturday, June 20, 2015, Midsum-mers Day in Lindsborg, at Bethany Lutheran Church. Interment was at Smoky Hill Ceme-tery.

THE CHURCH FAMILY

NEW BOOKS FOR

CHILDREN'S LIBRARY

Nancy Lundblad's special place on the

library committee connects with her love

of children's books. She recently found

and has generously donated Absolutely

Wild, a collection of fifteen short poems

about some of the strangest creatures in

the animal kingdom. Poems were writ-

ten by Dennis Webster and illustrated by

Kim Webster Cunningham, a father/

daughter alliance resulting in a perfect

pairing of pictures and poems.

Children are drawn to stories, poems

and pictures about animals, and it won't

take much coaxing from you to sit down

and turn the pages with them, reading

as you go. You will both enjoy the expe-

rience, beginning with "The Yak" and

ending with "The Gibbon."

The Children's "Library" is contained on

a book cart in Fellowship Hall. Books

can be read on the spot and returned to

the shelf, or checked out by signing the

card in the back and placing it in the

metal file box. There is a box on the

bottom shelf for returns. We think the

books we have are worth your attention.

Synod Assembly Report The Central States Synod Assembly presided over by Bishop Roger Gustafson and vice presi-dent Melba Bangert was held here at Bethany College on June 4 through 6. The keynote speakers were Rev. Dr. Rick Barger president of Trinity Lutheran Seminary and Rev. Linda Norman the treasurer of the ELCA.

At the assembly a number of resolutions were voted on; the following are some highlights. Protection Guidelines for Children, Youth, and Adults resolution encourages congregations to review how adults are trained to work with chil-dren and youth, and it encourages a review of guidelines for child protection policy. Lutherans Restoring Creation Synod resolution encour-ages the synod and its congregations to use Lutherans Restoring Creation resources to green the synod. Sunday, November 15, 2015 was designated as Bethany Home Sunday.

The treasurer reported that last year ended with a $41,209 surplus. This year’s budget is similar to last years budget expecting the same level of support. The last news of note was the retire-ment of vice president Melba Bangert after

many years. Josh Nelson

GLOBAL MISSIONS COMMITTEE

June 7, 2015, we again hosted Pastor Manfred Brockmann of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Vladi-

vostok in the Russian Far East. Since he first visited the United States 7 years ago, much has

changed in our Lutheran Churches in Russia.

Many German Russians settled in the Russian Far East generations ago. After the Iron Curtain fell,

it took a long time, but many of the German Russians moved back to Germany when it became pos-

sible. This caused problems for those left in Russia due to a lack of church membership to be able

to afford pastors for St. Paul’s and the other seven area churches around Vladivostok.

Pastor Brockmann, a pastor from Germany, has been in Russia for 22 years and is now retired, but

still works hard to help the eight congregations that need pastoral help.

Pastor Bradn Buerkle, a missionary from Montana whom we support, is now teaching in the semi-

nary in St. Petersburg, training lay leaders for the many churches without a pastor. There is a lack of

pastors and some of the smaller congregations can be well served by lay leaders.

Please pray for the Lutheran congregations in Russia today.

Mission support from Bethany Lutheran Church this quarter, July, August and September, is

for the Massai Girl’s School in Tanzania. Envelopes for this mission project have been included in

this issue of the Beacon. Those of you who receive the Beacon online will find envelopes available

at the entryways of the church. Please continue your support for our Global Mission Projects. Thank

you! Janet Malpert

ELCA Looks Ahead to 500th Anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation As a church that believes the good news of Jesus Christ provides “the freedom and the courage to boldly participate in what God is up to in the world,” members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America

(ELCA) are making plans for the 500th anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation in October 2017. “The

evangelical Lutheran Reformation offers the promise of God’s love that makes possible a life of a liv-

ing, daring confidence in God’s grace,” said the Rev. Marcus Kunz, assistant to the ELCA presiding

bishop and executive for theological discernment.

On Oct. 31, 1517, Martin Luther, an Augustine monk, posted his “Ninety-five Theses” to the door of the Cas-tle Church in Wittenberg, Germany, protesting the sale of indulgences by the Catholic Church. “When Martin Luther posted his ‘Ninety-Five Theses’ the resulting debate about Christian teaching and practice led to changes that have shaped the course of western Christianity for almost 500 years,” said Kunz. “At the heart of these wide-reaching changes was a deep conviction that God’s mercy or grace in Jesus is given freely to all. Some of the familiar ways of talking about Jesus in our time have left some people cold, feeling trapped

or demeaned.” Kunz said the 500th anniversary observance is an opportunity for the ELCA “to give

fresh expression of the liberating and renewing hope in Christ that Martin Luther described.”

Under the theme, “Freed and Renewed in Christ: 500 Years of God’s Grace in Action,” the ELCA’s 500th anniversary observance will include the 2015 Worship Jubilee in Atlanta in July, which is being planned in collaboration with the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians. In 2016, the Grace Gathering will be held in the summer along with the 2016 ELCA Church-wide Assembly in New Orleans.

The 500th anniversary observance, led by ELCA church-wide staff and an executive planning team, will also encourage and support initiatives across the ELCA’s 65 synods, nearly 10,000 congregations and other insti-tutions. “Across the globe, Lutherans and other heirs of the Reformation are noting its 500th anniversary with a wide variety of activities along a broad spectrum of emphases and interests,” said Martin Seltz, publisher for worship, music and congregational life for Augsburg Fortress, Minneapolis, and a member of the planning team.

Kunz said for many Lutherans in the United States, the northern European identity “isn’t an adequate way of understanding who we are. For one thing, many Lutherans in the United States have a very different experi-ence that has informed their identity.

The 500th anniversary observance will also include ecumenical and inter-faith activities, including participa-tion in The Lutheran World Federation and other global observances. “The 500th observance of the Refor-mation will be the first centennial anniversary to have a strong ecumenical dimension,” said Kathryn M. Lohre, assistant to the ELCA presiding bishop and executive for ecumenical and inter-religious relations. “Fifty years of Lutheran-Catholic dialogue in the United States and internationally have produced significant fruits, including the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification.”

With the signing of the Joint Declaration on Oct. 31, 1999, The Lutheran World Federation and the

Vatican agreed to a common understanding of the doctrine of justification and declared that certain

16th century condemnations of each other no longer apply. The Lutheran World Federation is a global communion of 144 churches representing more than 72 million Christians in 79 countries. The ELCA is the communion's only member church from the United States.

Information about events and activities is available at www.ELCA500.org and also on Facebook at www.facebook.com/elca500. Resources for the 500th anniversary observance are being produced by Augsburg Fortress. - - - - See more at: http://www.elca.org/News-and-Events/7727#sthash.tq5lWk7s.dpuf

A WORD FROM PHIL Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own insight. In all your ways acknowledge

him, and he will make straight your paths. Proverbs 3:5-6

A wise person here at Bethany Church recently wrote out this acronym for me. I thought it was very

good so I want to share it with you.

For

ALL

I

Trust

Him

For All I Trust In Him. Are you trusting in God for all? It is not an easy thing to do but it is a

rewarding thing to do. As the author of Proverbs writes, when we trust in the Lord, the Lord will

make straight our paths. Imagine you are walking through the woods. The pathway is overgrown

and barely visible. It might be a familiar pathway and one you have walked many times before. Yet,

you can still get lost. You can still stumble over the vines that block the way and the gravel that

crumbles below your feet. The darkness of the canopy confuses your directions. Yet, forward you

must march. This is life. This is the world around us. We might be traveling on the same pathways

over and over again. They are the routines of life, jobs, families, retirement, etc. We think we know

the way and we think nothing will happen. But, as every hiker knows, the path changes and the

many variables can trip you up. That too is life. There are many things in life that can trip us up and

cause us to stumble. The only true answer, the only way to make it through the path is to put your

trust in God. As it says in Proverbs, God will make straight your paths. God is there with you as you

hike along to clear the roadblocks and to light your way in the darkness. So, for all things put your

trust in Him. Have FAITH. Phil Hett

CHURCH HISTORY

Does anyone remember this trip? Pastor Philemon Smith and 32 women and children from Beth-

any Church’s Talitha (Junior Mission Society) went by chartered bus on June 29, 1948 to visit the

Mariadahl Children’s Home at Cleburne, Kansas. The event was planned by Mrs. Mahoney and Mrs.

Sjoberg. The women brought a well-planned dinner and ice cream. Watermelon was a special treat

from Mrs. C. F. Erickson and Esther Bergin. That afternoon, before returning home, the Talitha chil-

dren were joined by the Mariadahl children in singing several songs and Pastor Smith spoke about

“The Good Shepherd." Talitha Juniors on the trip were Larry Danielson, Karen Ann and Carl Vernon

Nelson, Joyce and Lorraine Sjoberg, Lynette and Eddie Polson, Willard and Robert Keding, Phyllis

Mahoney, Sarah and Linda Hagstrand, Sonja and Carolyn Anderson and their mothers, plus Jon

Levin, Jean Ann Billing, Ervalene Johnson, Annette and Robert Bengtson, Dorothy Detmer, Helen

Shellhammer and sponsor, Mrs. Fred Wallerstedt.

Mariedahl Children’s Home was supported by churches of the Kansas Conference of the Augustana

Lutheran Synod. Information taken from The Kansas Conference Lutheran, July 1948.
