I’m not a fan of Star Wars, but as I looked for a

photo for this page, I thought for this month, in this year – the saying was apt – May the Force Be With You! The Force to endure these strange days, weeks, and now months. The Force to do what is right for your family, your friends, and mostly, for YOURSELF! The Force to ask for whatever assistance you may need – speak up because there are plenty of ways people can spread your message to get you the correct help at the correct time. And most importantly, The Force to protect both your physical and mental health until we, as a group, and as humanity, reach whatever our ‘new normal’ may be.

As we make our way to the last chapter meetings of the 2019-2020 season, let us pause on May 31. On this date in 1975, the “official state-wide meeting of the newly created Massachusetts Society of Genealogists” took place at the “Mormon church Stake Center, Route #30 and Brown Street, Weston, Massachusetts.” The meeting began at 9 a.m. and was scheduled to end at 3 p.m. The business meeting was from 10-12. There were sandwiches and punch for the lunch break. The afternoon began with greetings from “Mr. Edward Sullivan, Clerk of the Middlesex County Superior Court” followed by brief talk on Heraldry – Coats of Arms by Mrs. M. Elaine Muldoon of Heraldic Associates and a talk by Mr. Donald Bentley of Oldstone Enterprises on stone rubbing and ending with remarks by the President of the Society.

This is just one of many facts about this Society that are included in the archives of MSOG. Our Archivist/Historian, Wendy Sheppard, is working to get a great portion of our archived material (currently taking up almost 20 boxes) digitized and onto a

Google-based cloud location to be shared with interested parties. As one of the few people who has read most of what is in those boxes (I was the Archivist/Historian before Wendy), I encourage you to watch for what is being digitized and look through various pieces of this history. It is a great reminder of how social interactions and communications occurred in recent history. After all, when was the last time you attended an event and were served punch?

Of course, now is also a time to think ahead to what will be in those same archives about our 2019-2020 season. It certainly was an unusual one! I’m proud of how people came together to enjoy what could be offered. Hopefully many of you now have experience with webinars and virtual learning and will embrace that in the days and years ahead.

I know that many more people are now familiar with our GoToWebinar software and how to organize, moderate, and evaluate a webinar. All of which is an asset to MSOG as we move forward.

Chapters will make their own decisions on when to resume in-person meetings based on their membership, expected attendance, and town and state guidelines for in-person gatherings. Until we can safely meet in medium sized groups – please enjoy all the digital offerings of our society as well as other genealogy groups and businesses. It truly is a great time to be so involved in this hobby we all love!
