MEMORIAL DAY IN THE 4TH MILITARY DISTRICT

. Greeting! Spring/Summer is here and units of the district are busy with various ceremonies training drills, re-enactments etc. Since my last report I have attended the following activities. March 25th Medal of Honor Day at Mt. Hope cemetery, south St. Louis County, Missouri April 14th Lincoln Tomb ceremony, Springfield, Illinois and G.A.R. founder's ceremony, Petersburg, Illinois. May 18, 19th & 20th Artillery School, Boscobel, Wisconsin May 28th Memorial Day (observed) Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis, Missouri. I took command of the casket guard, previously held by the late 1st Lt. Charles E. Funck III, SVR. The SVR was represented by

Infantry, Artillery, Cavalry and Engineer units. Also representing the Civil War veterans were Union and Confederate re-enactors. The Sons of the American Revolution, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Scottish American Military Society represented veterans from other wars as casket guards. 1st Lt. Funck's years as casket guard commander were remembered by all the units acting as guards. I wish all district units a safe and successful year of events.

4th Military District Artillery School Success

Nearly 100 artillery re-enactors and hobbyists attended a “School of the Piece” hosted by the SVR’s 4th Military

District and conducted by the National Civil War Artillery Association (NCWAA),

held at the Boscobel, Wisconsin, Sportsman’s Club on May 19th. Students representing 11 units from the

Civil War participated in classroom and field drills. The artillery school’s curriculum was designed to promote the

safe use of canon in the re-enacting hobby. Students receive a 2-year

qualification upon completion of the school. Units and individuals from Illinois,

Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin participated. SVR units attending included Cushing’s Battery (Battery A, 4th U.S. Lt. Artillery), the 3rd Iowa Lt. Artillery, and Co. A, 49th Iowa Vol.

Inf. The Headquarters Company provided registration and administrative support. The school has been held in Boscobel on even years since 2002. Next year’s school will be held at Jefferson Barracks, St. Louis, MO.

4TH Military District Unit Receives an Award

Lt. Col. Jack Grothe presented a

certificate of recognition to Cushing's Battery's 1st Lt. Rich Young. The Battery was one of several units recognized for

their long term support of the school.

New Information Board

On June 2nd the Department of Missouri held its annual Encampment in Ste. Genevieve

Missouri. This was the first time that the new 4th Military District information board was

displayed for members to look at. In the center of the board

contains a map of the 4th Military District and photos of units were placed on the side

boards. The photos next to the map were units in the 4th Military District who sent me

photos of their activities on Memorial Day.

It met with the approval of Lt. Col. Jack Grothe since this was the first time that he had seen

it. Please send me a group photo of as many members of your unit so I can place it on the board.

My hope is that it will also help to attract members to not only to the 4th Military District and to the SUVCW.

Memorial Day Observed

Members of the 4th MD Headquarters Company provided an honor guard for President Lincoln and U.S. Senator Ron Johnson, and later fired a salute during the annual Memorial

Day ceremony, hosted by C.K. Pier Badger Camp #1 and Auxiliary #4 at Milwaukee’s Calvary Cemetery. Over 540 people attended the Field Mass, celebrated by Auxiliary Bishop Donald Hying and the patriotic program, which followed.

Cpl. Kent Peterson, Company Adj. served on the color guard, leading a procession, which included the 1st Brigade Band, Camp and Auxiliary, and the public to four Civil War

veterans graves, representative of the almost 200 in the cemetery. Pvt. Brian McManus (Camp Commander) presented greetings, President Lincoln recited the Gettysburg Address, and keynote speaker Sen. Johnson provided appropriate remarks.

Members of the HQ Company, Cushing’s Battery (SVR), and American Legion Police Post 415 fired salutes. The Senator fired two salutes from the cannon. HQ Company members

also provided security around the firing zone. The HQ Company’s Pvt. Dean Collins, who served as master-of-ceremonies and read Gen. Logan’s General Order

#11, planned the Mass and ceremony. A member of Post 415 sounded Taps.

Reclaiming Our Heritage

Members of the Headquarters Company marched in a parade, manned an information

booth and provided impressionists for the 11th

annual Reclaiming Our Heritage event on the grounds of Milwaukee’s Zablocki VA Medical

Center. The event was held June 2-3 with a school day on June 1st. Since 2002, the multi

era living history and tribute to veterans has attracted thousands to the historic Soldiers Home grounds. The site was one of four original

National Homes authorized by President Lincoln before his death. Twelve of the original buildings remain.

“station” on the Underground Railroad. Attending were Mike Carr, 2 LT

1st sergeant Dennis Sasse and Privates Dan Yowell and Alan Kirshen.

May 8 Six members of the Company held a living history program for 275

Illinois Vol. Infantry, at the cemetery at Walnut, IA cemetery. Those

taking part were 1 LT Carr, 2 LT Kelley, 1 Sgt Sasse, Sgt. Krecklow, Corp. A. Braden, Corp. J.

Braden, Corp. Damgaard, and Privates Cleaver, Linn, and Rittel

May 27 Eight members of Co. B, 10th

Iowa assisted in the dedication for the new

veterans monument in Macedonia, IA. Those taking part were 1 LT Carr,

2 LT Kelley, 1 Sgt. Krecklow, Corp. A. Braden, Corp. J. Braden, Corp.

Damgaard, and Privates Kirshen and McAlpine.

May 28 Ten members of Co. B, 10th

Iowa participated in Memorial Day

ceremonies at the Atlantic, IA Cemetery serving as color guard. Those

taking part were 1 LT Carr, 2 LT Kelley, Sgt. Krecklow, Corp. A. Braden,

Corp. J. Braden, Corp. Damgaard, and Privates Hancock, Kirshen,

McAlpine, and Yowell. Pvt. McAlpine laid the wreath for the GAR and

Pvt. Hancock laid the wreath commemorating WW II.

Company E, 47th Missouri Infantry Park Hills, Missouri

The 47th Missouri Infantry has been very active since the last issue of

the “Past in Review.” Our unit held a special program on Civil War

uniforms at the March 8th meeting of the Gen. James R. McCormick

Camp #215, which provided us an excellent opportunity for a group

photo (with the exception of 2LT Keith Coplin who is fighting in

Afghanistan currently). Then, on March 13th, members of the unit

presented a program on Civil War Uniforms and equipment for the

Mine Au Breton Historical Society in Potosi, MO. Furthermore, during

the month of March, members of the unit presented Civil War programs to

three different Cub Scout and Boy Scout groups (Ironton, MO; Potosi,

MO; and Park Hills, MO) as well as presenting four SUVCW Eagle

Scout awards in uniform to four deserving young men. To finish out the month, our group participated in the

historical “March Back in Time” event in Leadington, MO.

Next, April did not slow

down either, as we stayed

busy with many activities as

well. Members presented

three SUVCW JROTC

awards to one cadet in each of

the following high schools:

Farmington, MO;

Fredericktown, MO; and New

Madrid, MO. Some of our members also participated in the annual

Lincoln Death Day ceremony in Springfield, IL. Our unit was also asked to march in a parade in De Soto, MO.

Then, May was quite eventful as well. We were invited to participate in a

Civil War educational day at Johnson Shut-Ins State Park near Lesterville,

MO. Some of our members also presented a Civil War soldiers gear and

daily life at Farmington’s 4th Grade Pioneer Day. Also, during this

month, we were asked to march in an Armed Forces Day parade in

Hillsboro, MO. In

addition, we held our own

private Memorial Day

ceremony at the gravesite

of Gen. James R.

McCormick in

Farmington, MO.

Finally, June came and it appears as though it will be another busy

moth for us as well. On June 9th, we provide the honor guard for the

opening ceremonies for Newburg, MO Day (an approved SUVCW

Sesquicentennial event), and stayed for a day of educational

demonstrations. We also have several more activities for this month, but that will have to wait until next issue.

Company A, 49th Iowa Volunteer Infantry “The Governor’s Own”

Des Moines, IA Guardsmen of ���The

Guardsmen of the Governor’s Own Forty-Ninth Iowa VVI joined with

brethren from the Grenville M. Dodge Camp #75, and the Dodge

Camp Auxiliary #8 for the annual

remembrance ceremonials at Des Moines Woodland Cemetery at

noon on the designated Memorial Day holiday on Monday, May 28th,

2012. For this unit it was the fourth consecutive year that we

have participated in this event to honor our fallen Grand Army

ancestors and support our sisters of the Dodge Camp Auxiliary.

MONUMENT DEDICATION

Saturday June 23rd, 2012 From Commander Kirk L. Dermint Colonel Friedrich K. Hecker Camp

#443 Belleville, Illinois Granite stone measuring 4 feet high by 6 feet long. Core drilled

into the base to prevent tip-over in the future for whatever reason. All 23 Union soldiers names

engraved into the stone. The site is lighted and additional

upgrades have been made. Three flagpoles are to the rear of monument. The following units are represented by the Union Veterans:

150th Illinois Infantry, 140th Illinois Infantry, 117th Illinois Infantry ,65th Illinois Infantry, 52nd Illinois Infantry, 30th Illinois Infantry , 27th Illinois Infantry, 3rd Illinois Cavalry.

Company F, 78th Enrolled Missouri Militia Ste. Genevieve, MO

Veteran. From the VFW Hall we proceeded to Memorial Cemetery.

Memorial Cemetery was closed in 1883 and has only four Civil War veterans buried in it. Only two have grave markers and we are pretty sure where the third one is

buried but we have no idea where the fourth is buried. The one who lies in an unmarked grave that we are fairly certain where he is buried was killed at the Battle of Shiloh. The

G.A.R. Post was named after him as well as our SUVCW Camp. He is Lt. Col. J. Felix St. James. The fourth was

Private Jacob Zimmer who was a drummer boy in the 30th Missouri Infantry Regiment who died at hospital during the Civil War in Ste. Genevieve.

3. In the evening 4 of us attend the 2 events at

Antelope Park in Lincoln, NE. The 1st event was

for the veterans from Desert Storm to the

present day. The 2nd one was a candle light for

all the WWII, Korean, and Vietnam veterans

that had died in the past year.

1Sgt. Steve Aarli Greetings All, On behalf of the Rockford Zouaves SVR we trust that you will have an enjoyable summer.

The Rockford Zouaves remain busy assisting the John A. Logan Camp and the Mary Logan Auxiliary.

We have assisted in a cannon restoration and rededication in Byron, Il. o on May 27, 2012 well as forming an Honor Guard at the

GAR section of Greenwood Cemetery on May 26, 2012.

On Monday May 27 we took part in a Memorial Day program in Rockford’s Memorial Hall giving talks on the battle of

Shiloh and Rockford Soldiers. Our strength dropped when two members mustered out, but the good news is that we

welcome PDC Stuart Stefany as a new member.
