Before You Go…Tips For Packing…

"Pack everything you think you will need, and get rid of half of it."

Choose dark (black, dark blue, purple, green, dark red) or neutral (all browns and shades of gray) colored clothing, so any dirt or stains acquired along the way won't be too apparent. Try to stick to two or three colors, so that all your clothes mix and match.

For cooler weather travelers: layering clothes is more effective than hauling around bulky sweaters or coats. 2



Roll, don’t fold, your clothes. You will be able to fit more into your suitcase, and rolling decreases the wrinkles that will appear (no ironing!!).3



Put an odour absorber, scented drawer sachet, or scented dryer sheets inside your luggage to keep your clothes (and shoes) smelling fresh. 4



Travel guides are big and bulky; instead of bringing whole guides, try taking out just the pages you need. Then, punch a hole through them, and join them together on a ring. You’ll have all of the information you need, without the bulk.

• a skirt, dress, or good pants for a night on the town• many nightclubs and fancy restaurants will refuse admittance to people

wearing jeans or sneakers

• a pair of good walking shoes or sandals

• a raincoat, waterproof jacket, or umbrella

• a Swiss Army knife (preferably with scissors and a corkscrew)



• toiletries – small, travel size bottles

• towel – microfiber sport towels fold up nice and small and dry super quick

• sheet – satin/polyester or silk*

• camera & film – if using digital, be sure to have an adapter plug set and voltage converter

• first aid kit

• sewing kit

these can be made very budget friendly using supplies from home

We talked about the dress code for nightclubs and fancy restaurants. Can you

• daypack – useful for carrying your camera, batteries, maps, travel guides, snacks…

• luggage locks • combination or key locks for luggage/backpack zipper• padlock or cable lock for hostel lockers• TSA 3-Dial lock and cable for locking luggage on trains, in hostels, etc…

• laundry detergent packs – lets you wash underwear, socks, etc…in the sink

• travel alarm clock



• money – bring your ATM card, a charge card if possible, back up traveler’s cheques, and have about fifty-dollars worth of cash on hand

• money belt – keep money, passport, ATM cards, etc…close at all times; wear your money belt UNDER your clothes!!

• identification – passport, driver’s license, ISIC, etc…• remember to make at least three photocopies of your passport – leave one at

home, and hide the other two in different places in your luggage• you may want to scan a copy into your email account for easy international access
