S ome of the greatest artworks of all time are unfinished, as is the case with this Tongan mougalaulau or paddle club. Mougalaulau were primarily used in warfare, with secondary usages in mock battles staged for entertainment and as the everyday adornments of chiefs.

To create these wonderfully incised clubs, woodworkers had traditionally used stone, bone and shark tooth tools to add shallow decorative carvings, but in the 18th Century European sailors introduced metal nails to Tonga, allowing for far deeper, geometric incisions. The intricacy of this notching meant that Tongan clubs could only be carved by master carvers. Though there are multiple theories behind only one side of this mougalaulau being carved, the likeliest cause is that its veteran maker passed away while working on it. The designs on the unfinished side of the club are already partly blocked out in a manner consistent with the fully-decorated side of the club, but the quality of the few carvings that are there indicates that a less-skilled carver attempted to finish the work begun by a master.

With the departure of Emily Mahon, our Senior Director of Education, we initiated a nation-wide search for her replacement. Over a period of almost five months, we reviewed over 100 applications and interviewed candidates

from as far away as Chicago, Virginia, and Northern California. We set very high standards for ourselves, and we were having trouble finding just the right fit. During the search process, it became clear that almost all of our Educational programming was linked to our collections and depended on our Collections department for resources and advice.

The solution to our search for leadership in Education suddenly became very clear.

We combined our Collections and Special Exhibits department with Programming and Education to form a single department of Programming and Collections under the very talented leadership of our new Vice President, Victoria Gerard; she has been with the Bowers for over seven years and has already accomplished a great deal. Victoria, along with Mark Bustamante, is setting us on a very exciting path with the recent opening of Tamayo, and upcoming partnerships with the Walt Disney Archives, the Quest for the Nile with the Royal Geographical Society, and yes, the return of Guo Pei in February, 2021. I’m personally very excited with the great team that has come together across the full spectrum of the museum’s departments. Best wishes,

Peter C. Keller, Ph.D.

Dimensions of Form: Tamayo and Mixografia features the artistic legacy of Mexican-born artist Rufino Tamayo. Fifty prints on loan from Mixografía® in Los Angeles will showcase the enormous depth and range of this pivotal artist’s work, from silhouetted figures to celestial bodies and the feathered serpent-god Quetzalcoatl, this exhibition illustrates the “fourth great one’s” last collaborative expedition to add form to a typically flat medium.

The fruit of this venture is Mixografía, a studio and a medium whose perfect marriage of artistry and technology allowed Tamayo to transcend the confines of the second dimension. A lithographic stone plate used for one of his largest printworks, serves as a significant point of interest for the exhibition. This exhibition reflects both the immense legacy left behind by Tamayo and how an aging visionary and a family of immensely talented mechanical engineers were able to combine their talents to breathe true dimensionality into paper. Dimensions of Form: Tamayo and Mixografia is organized by the Bowers Museum in conjunction with Mixografía. A multilingual digital guide providing details about the works on display is available in Chinese, English, Spanish and Vietnamese. To access the guide, visit guide.bowers.org.
