On behalf of the North Brookhaven Chamber of Commerce and its more

than 250 members, we want to welcome you to our communities and all

we have to off er. Th e Chamber is actually a merger of two long-standing

chambers of commerce. Th e CDM Chamber of Commerce which represented and supported the towns

of Mt. Sinai, Miller Place, Sound Beach and Rocky Point, and the Port Jeff erson Station- Terryville

Chamber of Commerce which represented the towns of Port Jeff erson Station and Terryville. Th ese

two great organizations joined “forces” in 2009 to form what is now Th e North Brookhaven Chamber of

Commerce.

Our towns have a lot to off er visitors to our community as well as to its residents. Th ere is beautiful

Cedar Beach in Mt. Sinai , home for our chamber’s annual Music Festival and Craft Fair, a tradition

which is now in its 22nd year. Th is event typically draws 7-10,000 people to our area and shows how

business, music and family fun can come together. Th e chamber also puts on its annual Spring Carnival

there as well. Money raised from these events help the chamber to award deserving high school seniors

monetary scholarships to help further their education.

We have the Heritage Park Center, aff ectionately known to residents as the “Wedge”. Located at the end of

Rtes 83 and 25a, this park is a beautiful facility boasting baseball and soccer fi elds, a walking track, and

only Mr. Soft ee ice cream stationary building in the state, a meeting hall and much more. Many events

are put on here throughout the year.

Our historic railroad car, located at the corner of Rtes 112 and 347, home to your Chamber of

Commerce, has been part of the community for more than 35 years. Our chamber uses this facility to

hold some meetings as well as some of our smaller events throughout the year. On the site is Suff olk

County’s highest fl ying American fl ag. Th is fl ag has been fl ying for the past twenty years, funded solely

by donations made by local residents and businesses. We have many other historic buildings and

organizations throughout our community such as the Mt. Sinai- Miller Place Historical Society and Th e

Rocky Point Historical Society to name a few.

It has been both an honor and a privilege to serve as President of the North Brookhaven Chamber of

Commerce. Our entire focus is bringing community and business together to SHOP LOCALLY!

We appreciate your support and invite you to join our organization. On behalf of the Offi cers and Board

of Directors, we wish you a wonderful visit to our towns.

Respectfully,

Joel DeGregorioPresidentNorth Brookhaven Chamber of Commerce

For over 20 years, Blues music has fl oated over the beach and harbor of Cedar Beach in Mount

Sinai. As the summer wanes, autumn harkens with colors and harvests and the summer craziness is replaced by a return to business, school and normality, we strive to give the warmth and sunshine one last hurrah with LI’s oldest and largest blues festival. Th irty + acts pour out their energy, hearts and souls from 2 stages and attract music lovers in the thousands to hear America’s indigenous music form as performed by some of the best musicians in the fi eld. Sponsored since its inception by the Northern Brookhaven Chamber of Commerce and Doctor Blues, this festival is the highlight of the music and cultural events that happen in our communities. Come rain or shine (no hurricanes, please), music as simple as a wo/man and a guitar or a 20 member horn band, both crank it out with heartfelt authenticity and the audience reciprocates with movement, huzzahs and applause. Th is is the fi nal chance for the tribe to gather and results in a colorful festival experience that is unparalleled and uniquely Long Island.

What started as a dream on a haycart and featured 2 acts along with rowboat races and a hotdog cart has grown into a multimedia experience where you can sample international cuisine, browse 100 vendors and hear blues, roots and jam music as varied as the collective imaginations of the players can make it. Our original vision continues and is the largest, oldest and sole completely not-for-profi t music festival on the island. While here, you can be

regaled with tales of midnight Delta crossroads, dance to the driving soul-blues of a big band, revel in the honesty of a singer/songwriter and gyrate to a band that continues the Grateful Dead tradition and experience. Th is vision has not always been presented at the beach as, occasionally the Cedar Beach Blues Festival has re-located to Bald Hill, Rocky Point, the Wedge and even the

legendary festival dubbed Peachstock that happened at the old Davis Peach Farm. Th ese moves nonetheless, the North Shore maritime ambience of Cedar Beach is our preferred home and we believe that the breezes, salt, sand and water add to the experience.

2 stages allow for a multiplicity of musical experiences. Th e intimacy and immediacy of a tent show give artists an up close and personal venue to move their audi-ence whereas the electric main stage is power, pulsing bass and wailing 6 strings. Th ey are close enough that you can experience both easily but far enough apart that they don’t confl ict with each others groove. Th is year, the 2 day format continues. Th ere have been some

years where the event hap-pened in the spring and fall and there were several years where the Cedar Beach Blues Festival ushered in the summer season instead of closing it. Th e event’s proceeds will continue the work of the North Brookhaven Cham-ber of Commerce who annually awards scholarships to help local seniors from the surrounding 4 high schools as they pursue higher education on the college or uni-versity level. We welcome you, our friends, neighbors and fellow blues lovers to our bit of heaven here at Cedar Beach and hope you have a fantastic time.

Breast Imaging Specialists. Board certifi ed radiologists Dr. Michelle Price and Dr. Joseph Carrucciu only read breast images…in fact they review more than 14,000 studies every year.

Read and manage annual mammograms to more complex cases. Many freestanding centers only want to handle everyday mammograms and refer their most complex cases to Drs. Price and Carrucciu because they have more than 30 years combined experience in breast health imaging. From annual mammograms to complex cases, you want to go to someone who can do it all!

Patient Navigation. Fortunato Breast Health Center is with you all the way. Whether you are a patient who simply needs an additional test or you face a challenging diagnosis, we’re here to assist you through your journey to wellness.

Higher Standards of Care. Drs. Price and Carrucciu are only at the Fortunato Breast Health Center, one of only four breast centers on Long Island to earn National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC). This recognition is earned by centers that voluntarily undergo a rigorous review of their performance and are committed to providing the highest level of quality breast care.

Why are they experts in healing?

The Miller Place-Mt.Sinai Historical Society is a wonderful resource and provided the insight into our heritage found on the following pages. Th ey provide a great service keeping the local history alive.

Th e historical society is a not-for-profi t organization and we welcome any interest, great or small, in our society. Th e Society’s headquarters are located at 75 North Country Road in Miller Place, New York. Tours are given during the summer every Saturday aft ernoon from 1:00 to 4:00pm and by appointment throughout the Spring and Fall. Please visit us for a tour or at one of our events.

Please contact the society at (631) 476-5742 and let us know what you think. Th ank you for visiting the Miller Place Mount Sinai Historical Society.

1974 NYS Bd. of Regents granted a charter to the MP Historical society.

1976 A strip along No. Country Rd was listed on National and State registers of historic places. It runs from the Wm. Miller House (75 No. Country Rd) on the west end past the pond on the east end and a portion down Lower Rocky Pt. Rd.

1978 that same area became the fi rst historic district in the Town of Brookhaven

1979 Th e society purchases the (c) 1720 Wm. Miller House (oldest existing house in MP) from the estate of Harry Miller Millard, last lineal descendant to reside in the home

1983 56 homes in Mt. Sinai gain historic district status1984 MP and MS form the MP-MS Historical society to

recognize the contiguous common history dating back to pre-revolutionary days.

Page 32: Passport to North Brookhaven 2012

1600’s Andrew Miller settles in MP.1720 His grandson built the home that the society owns. He originally had 105 acres (only about 1 acre of the homestead remains today). At that time there were only 4 or 5 houses in all of MP! (Th ey have long gone, we are fortunate to have the 1720 house still standing)Th e house represents 7 generations of the same lineal family.

Miller Place was once known as “Miller’s Place” for the founding family. Th e post offi ce changed its name for expediency.

Th e Revolutionary War had its impact on Miller’s Place. Heads of households were required to state their allegiance to King George (Loyalists) or live in fear of reprisal for being a “rebel” (we say “Patriot” today). Th ere are diaries recording the King’s men marching through MP. One indicates an encampment of George’s men on Timothy Miller’s land (second generation) and taking advantage of his crops. (He had claimed Loyalty to the King, perhaps to protect his ailing wife and 11 children) while his brother, Ebenezer, had been suspected of being a rebel. Ebenezer’s teenage son was shot dead in

the home which still stands when the King’s men came to question him in the night. Ebenezer’s home is now a Bed & Breakfast, known as the Arc on No. Country Rd. If you had resided in MP in those years, the men in your family would be expected to take turns on the bluff s to warn the locals of invading soldiers. Women also took part in spy activities. Laundry, for example, would be hung in specifi c ways to relay messages of war activities.

Most profi table product for local farmers was cordwood which was cut during winter and stacked along one of the 4 landing roads (We still have one road which bears the name Landing Rd). In spring, schooners would anchor during high tide and wait for low tide which allowed men to load the wood. Crews sailed the cargo to NYC (used in the “cold water fl ats”) or the brick factories along Hudson River.

Page 33: Passport to North Brookhaven 2012

Th e MP Academy in the historic district and now a library, was built using funds from local families. Th e lower level was used for a private school room 1834-1868, while the upper level was a “public audience room”. Children attending from other towns would board with local families. As public education became more stable, the Academy closed as a private school. It did serve again as a public school beginning in the early 1900’s until 1930’s when No. Country Rd. school was built. Th e Academy is still owned by the original shareholders. Th e bell tower contains the original bell rung to alert children that school was in session. Th e fan light above the door is one of only two in the community. Th e pot belly stove still heats the Academy in winter.

LIPA right away in MP just north of Rt. 25A was once the LIRR right-of-way. In 1893, the PJ branch extended to Wading River. A MP station was built in 1894 east of Sylvan Ave, between present day Echo Ave. and 25A. Th e activity included passenger trains and freight trains carrying vegetables, wood, mail, fertilizer, and telephone poles (the newest invention in those days). During the summer, the passengers included young working women bound for the all-women Holiday House (built 1852) to enjoy what the usually quiet hamlet of MP provided for a fun vacation...swimming, bicycling, croquet, reading on a hammock, etc. Wagons and coaches waited at the station to take them to either Holiday House (now gone) or other boarding houses. Many local families off ered rooms to the young women to supplement family income. More than one young gal married a local fellow! Th e station burned to the ground in 1902 and rebuilt

within the year. In 1934 the station was again lost to fi re. Th e MS and Sound beach FD were unable to save it due to lack of a water source. Again, it was rebuilt. However, in 1938 service was totally discontinued despite much opposition. Th e RR claimed to be losing money and abandoned the MP line.

Th e MP pond on No. Country Rd. was originally a stream running through swampland. Early residents damed it and dredged the area to form a pond in the 1600’s. It provided water for crops and livestock as well as ice. In the early 1900’s, the pond was used for recreational activities such as rowing, fi shing and ice skating (the latter activity still occurs today). Early vehicles in need of water to prevent overheating also benefi ted from the pond.

Page 34: Passport to North Brookhaven 2012

Many of the MP founders are buried in the cemetery of the Congregational church in Mt. Sinai (an interesting visit). However, there is one known remaining burial ground in MP located near No. Country Rd., east of Pipe Stave Hollow.

Th e Society welcomes visitors to tour the (c)1720 Wm. Miller House every Saturday 10 AM to 2 PM from June until the annual Country Fair (Sept 22-23), or by appointment. Th ere are informative pamphlets available including a self-guided walking tour of the historic district. Aside from the house itself, the historic campus includes an old post offi ce (it is popular at Christmas time when the Postman Pete program welcomes youngsters with a precious letter to Santa), two corn cribs, a barn (once owned by the Chereb farm family in MP and moved to present location) and the original privy. Also available is a pictorial book about MP published by Arcadia Press as part of the Images of America series. A visit to the Wm. Miller House and outbuildings is truly a time travel to days of yore. Th e barn is full of farm equipment and tools. Th e house has had very few changes and retains the period ambience for each of its three sections.

Th at’s the history lesson for today! Again, thanks for showing an interest. Have a great day.

People shouted “Save the Wedge” in 2000.Th is became a shining example of a successful civic action in our democratic

society. Today the Heritage Park promotes a sense of community to thousands of citizens. An idea from 1988 lead to the civic action for a central park in 1999. Th e choices were aHome Depot, 17 houses or a Central Park.Leaders of the Mt. Sinai Civic and later theHeritage Trust led the struggle to get Countyand Town offi cials to spend our tax money tobuy the land and develop the community’splan for the park now in place. Th e Trust,Town and County are partners in managingand enhancing Heritage Park.Th e Heritage Trust was created in 2000 toadd amenities to the park and to build theHeritage Center on land owned by theHeritage Trust. Th e not-for-profi t and volunteerbased Trust manages the HeritageCenter for community and private functions.Donations to the Trust of money, plantings, stone walls, pavers, trees, benches, and playground have enhanced the park.People agree “saving the Wedge” has given usa wonderful park for “we the people” of allages and for generations to come.Help volunteers to fi nish the Avenue!

Elizabeth M. Duerschmidt - ArtistWeb site: lizduerschmidtartist.comEmail: [email protected] # 631-835-9268 For over thirty fi ve years, Elizabeth M. Duerschmidt, a self taught artist has been portraying the quaint towns and bucolic landscapes of the East End. Born in Riverhead, raised in Westhampton and pres-ently a resident of Rocky Point for the past ten years, Liz considers the whole East End of Long Island her “home”. Viewers are drawn to her canvases because they are of familiar or nostalgic scenes of yesterday, which are stripped of their beauty and history only to make way or new developments. Her art is charged with strong personal emotion with a deep attachment to our every-day world. She loved it when someone once described her work as “Hopper-ish with a whimsical touch”! Although Liz is mostly known for her portrayal of historic build-ings, towns and bright landscapes, her true creative passion is for old pickup trucks (old “farm hands” tucked behind barns and covered in weeds), Liz scouts out these scenes by driving around in her bright red 19 Chevy 3100 Deluxe pickup truck. Recently retired after thirty one years as a mail carrier in Westhamp-ton Beach, Liz is excited about devoting herself fi nally to being a “full time” artist with no alarm clock to answer to. Liz “stepped out of the box” over the winter and painted a series of large canvasses in black and white. They will be on view at the Westhampton Beach Performing Art Center, 76 Main Street, Westhampton Beach, from May through July. Liz is represented year round by Fitzgerald Gal-lery, 48B Main Street, Westhampton Beach, 631-288-6419. Liz is a member of the East End Arts Council.
